Cosmology is an unusual science with an unusual history. This book examines the formative years of modern cosmology from the perspective of its interaction with religious thought. As the first study of its kind, it reveals how closely associated the development of cosmology has been with considerations of a philosophical and religious nature. From nineteenth-century thermodynamics to the pioneering cosmological works of Georges LemaƮtre and Arthur E Milne, religion has shaped parts of modern cosmological theory. By taking the religious component seriously, a new and richer history of cosmology emerges. ... Read more

"Every civilization in every Era had its own thinkers, theologians, scientists, philosophers. Every one of them had its own look and its own name, according to the community they were born into, but they all tried out to reach for the deeper and upper truth. Each one in its own way, some through subjective and dogmatic theology, others through the all questioning and objective science, these 2 paths have never managed to engage with one another, until now. This book is not meant to create a new subjective and dogmatic religion, but to lead human kind to a new Era, using the all questioning objective scientific method to explain spirituality. The eternal questions that have always pursued mankind now have the answer, like it has been announced for centuries it would be by the year 2000. Holy Grail was never meant to stand for ancient doctrines or procedures, but to bring us all, a new vision of life and the Universe." ... Read more

Product Description
Michael Faraday (1791-1867), the son of a blacksmith, described his education as "little more than the rudiments of reading, writing, and arithmetic at a common day-school." Yet from such basics, he became one of the most prolific and wide-ranging experimental scientists who ever lived. As a bookbinder's apprentice with a voracious appetite for learning, he read every book he got his hands on. In 1812 he attended a series of chemistry lectures by Sir Humphry Davy at London's prestigious Royal Institution. He took copious and careful notes, and, in the hopes of landing a scientific job, bound them and sent them to the lecturer. Davy was impressed enough to hire the 21-year-old as a laboratory assistant.

In his first decade at the Institution, Faraday discovered benzene, isobutylene, and two chlorides of carbon. But despite these and other accomplishments in chemistry, he is chiefly remembered for his work in physics. In 1831 he proved that magnetism could generate an electric current, thereby establishing the field of electromagnetism and leading to the invention of the dynamo. In addition to his extraordinary scientific activities, Faraday was a leader in his church, whose faith and wish to serve guided him throughout his career. An engaging public speaker, he gave popular lectures on scientific subjects, and helped found a tradition of scientific education for children and laypeople that continues to this day.

Oxford Portraits in Science is an ongoing series of scientific biographies for young adults. Written by top scholars and writers, each biography examines the personality of its subject as well as the thought process leading to his or her discoveries. These illustrated biographies combine accessible technical information with compelling personal stories to portray the scientists whose work has shaped our understanding of the natural world. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Accessible and accurate portrait
The book is easy-to-read and does both Faraday's life and his career justice. The reason for this all too rare balance and accuracy is almost certainly because of the fact that both the book's author Colin A. Russell and its editor Owen Gingerich are recognized and well-respected religion and science scholars as well as eminent scientists (Russell a well-respected chemist, Gingerich an astronomer).

Product Description
Abusing Science is a manual for intellectual self-defense, the most complete available for presenting the case against Creationist pseudo-science. It is also a lucid exposition of the nature and methods of genuine science. The book begins with a concise introduction to evolutionary theory for non-scientists and closes with a rebuttal of the charge that this theory undermines religious and moral values. It will astonish many readers that this case must still be made in the 1980s, but since it must, Philip Kitcher makes it irresistibly and forcefully.

Not long ago, a federal court struck down an Arkansas law requiring that "scientific" Creationism be taught in high school science classes. Contemporary Creationists may have lost one legal battle, but their cause continues to thrive. Their efforts are directed not only at state legislatures but at local school boards and textbook publishers. As Kitcher argues in this rigorous but highly readable book, the integrity of science is under attack. The methods of inquiry used in evolutionary biology are those which are used throughout the sciences. Moreover, modern biology is intertwined with other fields of science--physics, chemistry, astronomy, and geology. Creationists hope to persuade the public that education in science should be torn apart to make room for a literal reading of Genesis.

Abusing Science refutes the popular complaint that the scientific establishment is dogmatic and intolerant, denying "academic freedom" to the unorthodox. It examines Creationist claims seriously and systematically, one by one, showing clearly just why they are at best misguided, at worst ludicrous. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic but Outdated work still worth Reading
Philip Kitcher's "Abusing Science" is one of the classic works in the evolution/creationism debate. Now outdated, having been first published in 1982, it remains a fundamental source in debunking the arguments of creationists. It is not a history of the debate, although elements of historical analysis are present; it is not a balanced discussion of the debate in which both sides are evenly represented, although he sometimes offers the creationist perspective; it is not a primer for debate, although it may profitably be read for that purpose.

"Abusing Science: The Case Against Creationism" is essentially an overview of the major elements of the controversy and a well-researched, ably-organized, and effectively argued polemic that will be helpful to those accepting the concept of evolution, even as it points up the myriad weaknesses of the concept of creationism. There is nothing in this book, because of its publication more than 25-years ago there is nothing on the latest iteration of the creationist onslaught, "intelligent design." Neither it, nor the efforts of William A. Dembski, Michael J. Behe, and Philip E. Johnson are even mentioned.

Notwithstanding its datedness in the on-going war over scientific knowledge, and whether it will beaccepted or trashed by the creationists, "Abusing Science" continues to make a contribution as a useful brief introduction to the origins and arguments of creationism and the scientific responses to those religious (but certainly not scientific) ideas.

4-0 out of 5 stars a 1 for the first half, a 5 for the second half
In Chapter 1, the author delves into a discussion on genes and chromosomes which is too technical for me.Besides, there is nothing in that chapter which a Creationist wouldn't stipulate.

In Chapters 2 and 3, the author philosophizes. Those chapters did not seem helpful because most Creationists are unable to understand anything but short and concrete answers.

In Chapter 4, though, the book really starts getting good. Here, he discusses the usual nonsense over thermodynamics, mutations, transitional fossils, and anamolous footprints.Chapter 5 discusses flood geology, Creationist kinds, and macro- micro-evolution foolishness.Chapter 6 discusses evolution in the school, Creationist degrees real and bogus, and out-of-context quotes. Here is something which one can use against Creationists.

I didn't like the last chapter so well. The author and his wife, who co-authored this chapter, tell us that there is no proof that the Bible is not necessarily right and that Evolution is not amoral.I alrady knew that the Bible is not necessarily right, and they could have said more about animal instincts.

In this book Kitcher does a good job of not only showing the bad side of Scientific Creationism, but the good side of Evolution as well.It had a brief introduction to Evolution that was informative but basic to what you would learn in the first few weeks of a college level biology class. All around a good read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Who is abusing science?
This guy is out of touch.Hadrosaur bones were found on the ColvilleRiver north of Umiat on the North Slope of Alaska. The hadrosaur bones were collected in 1961 by R. L. Liscomb when he was working for Shell Oil Company.Research around the Colville River led to the bones being sent to the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park, where they were identified as hadrosaurian by C. Repenning.Buddy Davis also obtained similar bones. And they were all unfossilized. The blood was still extant. Now, unfossilized dinosaur bones are becoming abundant and yet there are no media reports about these finds. Why?To preserve the myth of evolution?Who is being unscientific here. Why can't evolutionists like Kitcher wake up and smell the coffee? How can they live with a lie?Why can't they accept the truth? The artistic depictions of dinosaurs in every culture, showing them coexisting with humans, is abundant.Yet, they persist in their unbelief.

And about this carbon dating.Let's look at it scientifically.Carbon-14 results when radiation from the sun makes contact with Nitrogen-14 atoms in the earth's outer atmosphere. The earth's atmosphere is not yet filled with C14.Therefore, the amount of C14 being produced is more than the amount that is decaying back to N14.Scientifically, a state of equilibrium would be reached in as little as 30,000 years. For this obvious reason, it appears that theearth'satmosphere is less than 30,000 years old.The available evidence, the only evidence we have, shows that it is less than 10,000 years old. However, there is questionable evidence that would estimate the atmosphere's age at 50,000 years or even 100,000.Nevertheless, all of the evidence poses a serious problem for evolution based scenarios since they posit millions of years for dinosaur habitat, namely, 65 million years.Repent and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.

Product Description

In an axial volume from his celebrated compendium, the "Ihya ulum al din," al-Ghazali shares his startling and original exploration of the meaning of trust in Divine Providence and recommends specific spiritual skills to help the seeker develop a state whereby he or she may rightly respond to events as they happen. This judicious use of stories is intended to imitate the Sufi practice of the master/disciple relationship, where the novice is helped to discern correct action.

1-0 out of 5 stars A word on translation
Kitab al-Tawhid wa al-Tawakkul is a significant part of al-Ghazali's Ihya Ulum al-Din, so I purchased it the first time I saw its translation. Unfortunately, it is my humble opinion that the translation is a little disappointing in that it is hardly acceptable by scholarly standards, which does not allow the reader to enjoy what the author has to say about the subject matter of the book. In many places, the meanings of the original Arabic statements were not reflected in the English interpretation at all, and this seems to have led the translator to be too liberal at times in interpreting those statements. The English rendition of certain crucial statements appear to be far-fetched interpretations and hardly make sense, at least to me. I do not think al-Ghazali actually says, in many places, what the translator claims he says.Readers who do not know Arabic to check the Arabic original must be very careful and cautious in reading it. I am just wondering if the Arabic-knowing people listed in the acknowledgments have really read and checked the translation at all. This work seems to be the result of a perfunctory effort and needs a total revision. It is just not fair to al-Ghazali, nor to the reader. ... Read more

Product Description
In recent years, the relations between science and religion have been the object of renewed attention. Developments in physics, biology and the neurosciences have reinvigorated discussions about the nature of life and ultimate reality. At the same time, the growth of anti-evolutionary and intelligent design movements has led many to the view that science and religion are necessarily in conflict. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the relations between science and religion, with contributions from historians, philosophers, scientists and theologians. It explores the impact of religion on the origins and development of science, religious reactions to Darwinism, and the link between science and secularization. It also offers in-depth discussions of contemporary issues, with perspectives from cosmology, evolutionary biology, psychology, and bioethics. The volume is rounded out with philosophical reflections on the connections between atheism and science, the nature of scientific and religious knowledge, and divine action and human freedom. ... Addressing fundamental questions about life, death and the universe Science and the Spiritual Quest examines the ways in which scientists negotiate the complex frontiers between their scientific and religious beliefs. This is the first English translation of a key section of Al-Ghazali's Revival of the Religious Sciences (Ihya' 'Ulum al-Din), widely regarded as the greatest work of Muslim spirituality. Its theme is of universal interest - death and the life to come. After expounding his Sufi philosophy of death and showing the importance of the contemplation of human mortality to the mystical way of self-purification, Ghazali takes his readers through the stages of the future life: the vision of the Angels of the Grave, the Resurrection, the Intercession of the Prophet, and finally, the torments of Hell, the delights of Paradise and - for the elect - the beatific vision of God's Countenance. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Winters Renders al-Ghazali Perfectly
I have read numerous translations of books from the Ihya and was absolutely amazed and pleased to come across TJ Winters English rendition of this classical work of Islamic philosophy. It is not easy endeavor to bring forth the essence of al-Ghazali's Arabic style into the European languages. But, this books has done it! Really protrays the message, tone, and intention of al-Ghazali for the English reader. A must have for all those interested in philosophy, especially Islam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless Spiritual Reading
Imam Ghazzali (Algazel) wrote this book hundreds of years ago, but the morays and virtues expressed in this text provide guidance that is much needed today.Read this book and you will find out why some regard this man as one of the greatest scholars of Islam, and his works on spirituality affected the Western world so immensely.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent translation of a great book from a great mind
Ghazali is a master. Anyone who has read any of his works can appreciate the depth of his vision. This transalation does great justice to this particular chapter of his great work - the Iyha. Good translations of Ghazali's works are hard to find. This is an excellent translation and a remarkable find. Lucky is the reader who can find a copy. A sobering view of death and how the remembrance of death is something to be valued, not to be turned away from. Overall, very highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Winter is Ghazali's Best Translator
This is an excellent translation of the eleventh book of Ghazali's magnus opus, Reviving the Religious Sciences. Winter's work does justice to the literary merit of the original Arabic. The book is filled with informative footnotes, and a superb introduction situating Ghazali in his historical context. It also has a very useful biographical appendix which provides the reader information about the figures whose aphorisms and anecdotes Ghazali quotes. All in all, its a superb work of scholarship. ...
