Gerd Ludemann argues that it is impossible to overlook the historical distance between every possible theology today and the primitive Christian period. The gulf between the history of Jesus and the varied picture of him in the New Testament makes it impossible to argue for the Bible's inspiration. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Challenging, Thought Provoking, yet still somehow Comforting
Ludemann's main point appears to be that ALL Christians in the first century or so after Jesus were regarded as heretics by one or another groupof their fellow Christians. Everyone, it seems, had their turn at beingorthodox or heretical, even the original Jewish Christians and St. Paulhimself. Ludemann convincingly illustrates these conflicts from the NewTestament and other first and second century texts, most of which still areembraced as orthodox today (e.g. the Apostles' Creed, Irenaeus, Tertullian,Justin Martyr). But Ludemann goes beyond the mere fact of factions withinthe early church to consider why, and what it all might mean, even to ustoday.

Ludemann locates the source of the problem in the natural humanresponse to Jesus' ministry and subsequent death. Jesus "lived out for hisdisciples the message of the boundless love and grace of God - in words andactions" to quote from this book. This love and grace is available to thepoor, the outcast and the lost even without temple sacrifices and ritualobservances. His message was also apocalyptic, that the kingdom of God(including the physical resurrection of the dead - a widely held belief inJudaism at the time) was at hand. Unlike other apocalyptic messages, Healso taught that we humans can live the Kingdom of God now before itactually comes. This message of living the Kingdom of God attracted a wideand fervent following of believers who then tried to make sense of Jesus'death in light of his radical and apocalyptic message and eventually inlight of the fact that the Kingdom did not come. The various "heretics" andindeed the emerging Catholic orthodoxy itself, each understood more fullydifferent parts of Jesus' message and accordingly so emphasized them intheir doctrines. Ludemann wonders if the whole notion of "heretic" isoutmoded and whether those earlier outcasts should be "welcomed back intothe fold" as contributors to the development of Christian belief.

What Ipersonally find most interesting about this book is Ludemann's discussionof how the books of the New Testament were selected, and in some cases evenwritten at all, largely due to "heretics". So it appears that IIThessalonians was a later anonymous re-write of St. Paul's genuine IThessalonians to "correct" its' heretical implications, and in fact wasmeant to replace it rather than stand beside it. Ephesians and Colossianslikewise seem to have been written by Gnostic inclined followers of St.Paul rather than Paul himself. The various "spins" in each of the fourgospels are also mentioned as examples of the variety of belief in thevarious Christian communities. Ludemann with his modern sensibilitiesstruggles with the notion of honest, earnest believers dealing in"forgeries". I do not understand it fully either, but from my own reading(see Fowden's "The Egyptian Hermes" and Doresse's "The Secret Books of theEgyptian Gnostics", both also reviewed by me) it seems that this was acommon feature of sacred writings in antiquity. As for selection ratherthan authorship, the "heretic" Marcion was the first to assemble aChristian body of sacred books (Luke, Acts, and seven of Paul's epistles).Until then most Christians were concerned with statements of belief (e.g.the Roman, or Apostles' Creed) rather than scripture, strange as that mayseem to us today.

This book challenged me with new thoughts and openednew understanding for me. In some places I was alarmed and disturbed, inothers excited and strangely comforted. The brief epilogue "Ten GoldenWords" is worth the price of the book all by itself and should be re-readevery day by those who would seek God through the study of Scriptures. Ihighly recommend this book, despite its' sometimes ponderous prose. (It wastranslated from academic German, after all).

2-0 out of 5 stars Question of fact
How can we view findings about Jesus of Nazareth when there was no Nazareth at the time of Jesus. My readings conclusively tell me that Nazareth came into existance well after the time of Christ.

4-0 out of 5 stars Heretics show the 'other' truth of Jesus
If history is written by the victors, then it makes sense that the losers would have a different - though equally valid -viewpoint. "Heretics" provides just this view of the man we call Jesus. After 2000 years you wouldn't think there was much new that could be said on the subject - Gerd Ludemann has proved this wrong! Like the equally contentious, yet inspiring, "The Autobiography of Jesus of Nazareth and the Missing years" by Richard G. Patton, this book does sound true! It does make sense that there would be this power struggle as each of thedifferent 'Christian' Church's wanted their definition of Jesus to be the 'official' version. This book will make you question, but ultimately reaffirm your belief in the Man from Nazareth. Excellent reading. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Resource for Spiritual Growth
This is an outstanding resource for anyone who would like to enjoy the daily practice of the ancient "liturgy of the hours" praying the Psalms, other scriptures combined with contemporary prayers of thanksgiving and intercession.

It is truly an ecumenical resource-- you pray for different church traditions each day and the collection of prayers comes from diverse background as well.A Benedictine monastery is using this Presbyterian resource so you know it appeals to people who wants a biblically grounded resource.

I mentioned this resource in passing when I preached on Mary's song in an Advent sermon.People had never heard of this version of Daily Prayer. We ordered ten copies for folks who might want it.They sold out, we ordered another ten.We ended up selling forty copies in our church and people continue to use them daily-- they and our church are enriched by their prayers.

Surf around the online excerpts and you will this is an amazing resource and a bargain for its price.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best daily prayer books
Over the years, I've tried many books that reflect the historic discipline of the "daily office" or "liturgy of the hours." For about 20 years that was the 1979 Book of Common Prayer (BCP); actually, I started with the trial-use "Blue Book" a few years earlier. I experimented with all four volumes of the Roman Catholic "Liturgy of the Hours," but it was much too complicated for practical use. And I've used "The New Century Psalter" published by the Pilgrim Press.

All of these resources are derived from the historic pattern of Christian daily prayer. I've been testing the "Book of Common Worship Daily Prayer" for three months now and I love it. It's portable and the design is both user-friendly and elegant. The book's editors were committed to inclusive language, but that has been a rock on which other office books have foundered, and if not done with sensitivity can make the psalms -- the heart of Christian daily prayer -- almost unreadable. This is not the case with BCW Daily Prayer. The editors wisely chose an adaptation based on the psalter from the 1979 Book of Common Prayer: the result is perhaps one of the most "singable" (and therefore readable as prayer-poetry) of any inclusive-language version of the psalms in English. Since the historic discipline of daily prayer involves the recitation of a fair number of psalms -- and that practice can become tedious or distracting if the translation is stylistically awkward -- this is a significant advantage.

The approach to inclusive language in BCW Daily Prayer is somewhat more conservative than alternatives like The New Century Psalter: the word "Lord" is used frequently not only in reference to Christ but also as the translation of "Adonai" or "YHWH" in the psalter. Otherwise, "king" is replaced by "sovereign" and male pronouns are seldom used in reference to God.

One oddity is that the historic "Gloria Patri..." -- which gives the office a Trinitarian shape and is traditionally used to conclude psalms and canticles on a specifically Christian note -- appears nowhere. "Psalm prayers" (an equally ancient Christian tradition) are provided for each psalm but these tend to break up the rhythm of recitation in a way that the trinitarian doxology doesn't. I wish the editors had provided the Gloria Patri and an inclusive-language alternative like the Eastern Orthodox "Glory to the holy...and life-giving Trinity...." Oddly, the daily office in the new "Evangelical Lutheran Worship" has also dropped the doxology for some reason. It can't be for the sake of historical authenticity: the Gloria Patri has been a part of the Hours since the fourth century. One especially misses the doxology at the beginning of the office after the opening versicle and response.

One might also wish that instead of long, discursive intercessory prayers the book had provided a selection of short litanies. Apart from its ancient origin, the litany-form also permits greater congregational participation. And a more generous selection of propers for holy days would have given the book greater ecumenical reach.

Still, the reader can supply a Trinitarian doxology whenever s/he wants, and this is just one flaw in a book that otherwise makes the ancient pattern of Christian daily prayer accessible to the contemporary church. I'm delighted it's still in print.

One final note: the two-year lectionary is an adaptation of the 1979 BCP. BCW Daily Prayer was published before the ecumenical "Daily Readings"--based on the Revised Common Lectionary's three-year cycle--was published. Users of this book who want their daily lectionary to flow seamlesslytowards the RCL Sunday readings can download "Daily Readings" from a number of sites, including this site: http://tr.im/readings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Introductory Text on Historic Reformed Liturgy
Baird's book is one of the classics of Reformed liturgical literature from the 19th century. Although surpased by more recent works (Thompson, Liturgies of the Western Church; Old, The Patristic Roots of Reformed Worship), it remains a valuable introductory survey for those interested in our liturgical heritage and practice. Baird surveys the liturgies of Geneva (following the now-defunct idea that Calvin was the source of all Reformed liturgy), France, Scotland, the Engllish Puritans, the Netherlands, and Heidelberg.

One of the benefits of this volume, besides its narrative style of writing, is that it helps to cure the main problem of liturgy in Reformed churches--we have been led to think we are anti-liturgical, and that only Rome, Constantinople, Canterbury, and Wittenburg are liturgical. Baird goes back to the sources (ad fontes) and shows that we have always been a liturgical people, and that high Calvinist liturgy is not an oxymoron. It is only under the influence of Pietism, Puritanism, and Revivalism, that we have left our roots and become Baptist in our liturgics.

Of special note to those in the Dutch Reformed tradition (e.g., Reformed Church in America, Christian Reformed Church, United Reformed Churches, Canadian Reformed Churches, Free Reformed Churches, Heritage Netherlands Reformed Churches), is how Baird traces the daily "Morning and Evening Prayers" to be used in family worship from Geneva, through the Netherlands, into Scotland, and into America. These treasures need to be recovered in our personal and family piety. They can be found, for example, in the Psalter Hymnal (Grand Rapids: Christian Reformed Church, 1959), 188-9.

Baird also reflects upon the Dutch Reformed in his day (mid-19th century) and says, "...of all the Calvinistic Churches represented in these United States, the Dutch Reformed denomination [RCA] alone has faithfully retained her ancient forms of worship" (207).

All seminarians, pastors, and laypeople in our churches ought to read Baird. For in so doing, our worship will be strengthened and our witness emboldened. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Full of wise insights
Human nature and God's dynamic truth have not changed over time, so Archibald Alexander's pastoral insights from over 150 years ago are still relevant. The author recorded what he had observed in Christians, and his careful analysis of their experiences provides wise counsel for all those giving pastoral care today.

I was afraid that the writing style would make the book drag, but that fear was not realized. The chapters that record others' deathbed comments did prove to be long, but they constitute a relatively small part of the book.

I heartily recommend this book to all those going into or already involved in pastoral ministry.I wish that I had read it years ago.

4-0 out of 5 stars Reflections on "Thoughts"
When another pulpit-less pastor walking in and out of a month of Sundays, in blue jeans and a well-pressed tee, just doesn't answer the longings of the suburban youth, how does the Church respond? The abandoned children of Evangelical and Reformed traditions have cried out: Where is the worship that informs the emotional intelligence of human existence? The Emerging Church has answered; nor ought we to be surprised that such a movement--often marked by being centered on the Spirit and the spiritual and the spirit, with its propensity toward anti-intellectualism--is finding such prominence.

Yet, despite offers of emotional openness, many Christians remain spiritually ignorant on matters of conversion: What is spiritual rebirth and wherein lies the perpetual struggle with habitual sin? What--if anything--is "spiritually normative"? Can I understand spiritual depression? Moreover, can I be spiritually depressed and still be a believer? What does it mean to confess my sins openly, to be accepted, absent from the kindly discipline of Word, prayer, and brotherly accountability? These questions aren't rhetorical, as we each--by the Spirit of God--are led through both veils of greater understanding and valleys of the shadow of Death.

Such a wide berth of spiritual practicalities lies at the heart of Archibald Alexander's Thoughts on Religious Experience. "Faith," Alexander states, "is simply a belief of the truth, when viewed as distinct, and discriminated from all other mental acts" (83), and that though "[b]efore conversion, the soul is sordidly selfish...no sooner does this change take place, than the heart begins to be enlarged with a an expansive benevolence. The whole world is embraced in its charity..." (100). Unfolding by example and principle the primary faces of spiritual renewal, Alexander offers sweet encouragement to the believer and tender propositions for reflection for those uncertain people.

The dangers of the Evangelical and Reformed tradition is to become a deep well--unsearchable to its deepest mark--from which only one barrel of water is drawn at a time. The dangers of the Emerging Church are to become the wide, fast-flowing river whose depth is less than a foot. Searching both depth and breadth--ill embracing the particulars of form, style, or structure (worship or architecture)--Alexander reminds that "no phenomena now taking place in our world is half so important and worthy of consideration, as the repentance of a habitual sinner; so that he utterly forsakes his wicked courses, and takes delight in the worship of God and obedience to his will. Let it be remembered, that these are effects observed only where the gospel is preached... No series of miracles"--nor, might we add, any amount of emotional sincerity or theological knowledge--"could give stronger evidence of the divine origin and power of the gospel, than the actual and permanent reformation of wicked men" (74-75).

Alexander addresses youth and the elderly. He addresses the uncertain searcher of truths, the young believer, and the Christian in his final days. He warns of worldly dangers--"lawful pursuits are more frequently a snare than those which are manifestly sinful...the love of the world gradually gains ground. The possession of wealth is viewed as important. Worldly entanglements and embarrassments are experienced; the spiritual life is weakened. A sickly state commences, and a sad declension ensues" (159)--and he warns of theological pride--"[p]ersons may advance rapidly in other kinds of knowledge, and yet make no advance in piety; but the contrary. They may even have their minds filled with correct theoretical knowledge of divine truth; and yet its effect may not be to humble, but to `puff up'" (192).

And yet, springing from his sincerest warnings are a wealth-spring of constant assurance to the believer, reminding us that "[s]o far are right views of free grace from leading those who entertain them to indulge in indolence, or be careless about holy living, that they impart the only true cause of activity and diligence in the work of the Lord" (133). And, as if anticipating such as ourselves, he even ventures to state, "As one of God's methods of comforting and strengthening his mourning children is by good books, I will embrace this opportunity to recommend to those engaged in spiritual warfare" (188), which he does.

Even as I now recommend Thoughts on Religious Experience. For pursuant upon the deep wells of Gospel truth, flowing in great rivers of grace and comfort to a broken world--where often a church may offer one or the other--Alexander drives believers back to principles from spiritual rebirth to coming resurrection, in a journey of emotional intelligence and theological import.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful on things most peole are scared to talk about
I found Alexander's book extremely helpful in areas of subjective Christian experience. He addresses problems that many Christians go thourgh but are afraid to discuss.Things like blasphemous or apostate thougts, fear, depression, and other matters of the heart. His thoughts on conversion and childhood are helpful too.I consider it a must for a Christian worker. ... Product Description
This second edition of Boyd and Brackenridge's acclaimed history of Presbyterian women in America traces women's affiliation with Presbyterianism for more than two centuries--from 1789 to the present. In the first century after the establishment of the General Assembly, churchmen expected females to be silent, subordinate, and submissive in the church; ordination was forbidden. However, women in the 19th century organized into local groups devoted to mission and Christian education projects. This fascinating historical account traces the evolvement of these groups into the women's boards of the late 19th and early 20th centuries that influenced women's current equal role in the pulpits, sessions, and courts of the church. Boyd and Brackenridge raise important issues concerning diversity, sustenance of community, and ordination--issues that will affect women's position in the church in the 21st century. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mayflower Pilgrims
(...)David Beale, professor of Church history at Bob Jones University, has taken advantage of recent scholarly studies and his own personal knowledge in putting together an excellent treatment of the Mayflower Separatists and their connections with other seventeenth century British dissenters. After describing their background in the context of the English Reformation, Beale details the fortunes of the Pilgrims from their beginnings in the Lincolnshire area of northern England to their landing at Cape Cod in 1620 and beyond. He references everything with the best sources and fleshes out his account with colorful descriptions of these indomitably brave souls. This is the best single reference volume on the Pilgrims in print. An added bonus for Baptists especially is Chapter Eight, “How the Earliest English Baptists Originated from the Pilgrim Separatists,” in which Beale accurately describes the relationships of both General and Particular Baptists to Separatism. In doing so, he dispels the myth that seventeenth century Baptists were the product of continental Anabaptism. He also advances the position that Henry Jacob, normally considered the founder of English Puritan Congregationalism (the Independents), actually became a Separatist, having more in common with John Robinson, the Pilgrims’ “consistent separatist” pastor, than with either the English Puritans or the more radical “Brownists.”
What makes this volume particularly valuable are the appendices, ten in all, which consist of primary source materials highlighting significant events in Nonconformist history. Several practical selections are included in the appendix section as well, such as an explanation of “double” dates for British events and a self﷓guided tour of Leiden, home of the Pilgrim Separatist congregation for twelve years. And if you are interested in researching your family name, Beale gives you the necessary help to get started.
Several personal trips to England, coupled with extensive technical research, has given Beale the reputation of being one of the world’s leading authorities on the Pilgrims. The quality and detail of his careful research is everywhere evident in this book. The intricacy of explanation in no way encumbers the narrative, however, but enhances an appreciation for the untiring fortitude and faith of this small band of Christians who faced incredible obstacles in helping to establish a strong foundation for American freedoms. Particularly in a day when our liberties are under severe attack by ruthless terrorists, a study of the Pilgrims can renew hope and endurance in the midst of trial and inspire devotion to the Word of God, the book that governed their actions and sustained their faith. The following summation from the Mayflower Pilgrims expresses well the reason why their lives are worthy of emulation: “The Pilgrim story is essentially a story of conviction, born in persecution, developed in exile, and based upon the Bible” (p. 160).
Dr. Beale conducts the Mayflower Tour of England, Wales, and Holland on a regular basis.(...)

3-0 out of 5 stars Unwittingly Revealing
This is a pretty dry read, but I picked it up after becoming sincerely interested in the almost uniformly downward trajectory of mainline protestant churches in America.

Honestly, the lifeless, clinical, even carnal assessment of their own condition, at least as presented from the Presbyterian vantage point in this particular book, is very telling. I don't think the Holy Spirit was even mentioned.
