Product Description
Nichiren Shonin was born in a turbulent time in Japanese history. Born as a fisherman's son in a small village, Nichiren was thrust into a world of deceit and treachery. He would be the object of the government's displeasure because of his calls for reform in Japanese society and a return to the truth of the Buddhist Dharma. Here is a chronicle of this important figure of Japanese Buddhism which tells of his conflicts with the rulers of his time and of his teachings. Nichiren was a Buddhist reformer, who saw the Lotus Sutra as the cornerstone of the Dharma. His life and teachings continue to serve as an inspiration and guide for people's lives today. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars THIS SCHOOL NEVER UNDERSTOOD NICHIREN
This is a one of the Buddhist Schools that immediately departed from Nichiren Daishonin\s doctrine upon his death, and started having Buddha statues and hiding Nichiren\s mandala. They only view them as the founder of the school not recognizing who he really was. This is not a good biography of Nichiren. Not a trustworthy one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nichiren:Diary of a Madman
This was an excellent book historically but what I learned was very sad.Adorn The Lotus Sutra or you are wrong and bad things will happen.I have been studying Buddhism for 9 years and this statement is atrocious. The Buddha taught that there are 84,000 paths to liberation not only one.Nichiren's way was to "Do It
My Way or No Way at All".I don't understand the mentality of the followers of Nam Myoho Renge Kyo.Perhaps we are all doomed to the Realms of Hell.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the read!
This book is the best English language resource on the life of Nichiren available today. The author makes use of a broad range of truly scholarly sources, and yet his writing style is so engaging and dynamic that one almost feels like they are actually witnessing the events being described by the author. The author goes to the trouble of making a clear disticntion between the events in the life of Nichiren which are actually historical and the events attributed to his life which are based on popular traditional hagiography. Nichiren is a much misunderstood person; being seen quite often as someone who was intolerant of other religions only for the sake of establishing his own. This book clarifies that Nichiren's intolerance was towards religious and government policies that oppressed the common people. In this regard, the book almost reads like a "theology of liberation." It is well worth the read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Biography on Nichiren Shonin
This small book contains an engaging biography of Nichiren Shonin, a Buddhist master who founded the Hokke (Lotus) school in 13th century Japan. In addition to the text itself, the book also contains glossy pages showing the life of Nichiren by way of painting, and is a nice addition. The writing-style of this book is quick, enjoyable, and easy to read. It is not overly technical or laden with terms, but does provide historical background to place Nichiren's life in context. One not need be a scholar to understand it, and it is very accessible to the beginning student of Buddhism.

This book contains only the orthodox views and teachings of Nichiren, and is one of the few biographies in English that are reliable on this account. Nichiren's teachings are also explored in this work, and his devotion to the Eternal Buddha Shakyamuni comes through clearly. It can be said that this book is more of a devotional piece or a hagiography than an academic work. Nichiren Shonin emerges as a powerful figure at the center of this book, propagating the Lotus Sutra under the most stressful conditions imaginable.

This is an excellent introduction to Nichiren Shonin and his teachings, who is often misunderstood not only in popular culture, but academic circles as well! I do hope to see a larger and more in depth biography of Nichiren published in English in the near future to complement this enjoyable book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Unconventional treatment
This volume on Nichiren, the 13th century Buddhist who founded a revolutionary school of Buddhism, is a work with certain merits. There are wonderful reproductions of rare prints depicting Nichiren in his time.I know of better source information on the life of Nichiren Daishonin available through the Soka Gakkai International organization. ... Product Description
On a spring day in the year 1253, a Buddhist priest, Nichiren Daishonin, began to chant and teach 'Nam-myogo-renge-kyo.' In these words was the universal truth through which he had attained enlightenment. He taught that, by chanting this phrase, all people...regardless of ability or understanding...could actually activate their potential for enlightenment and happiness.

Rooted in the beliefs of this 13th century Japanese priest, Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism teaches that spiritual and material blessings can become available in this life. Richard Causton explains the teachings and their history and provides examples of how followers have found their full potential within this daily practice. He shows how personal goals can be combined with a commitment to world peace, ecology, and the easing of suffering through the daily recitation of the Lotus Sutra...a central teaching of Buddhism...and chanting.

The practice of Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism involves the determination to transform one's own character and to see the transformation through to the very end. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars New version is better
The new version of this book, called "The Buddha in Daily Life" is much better than the older version.

5-0 out of 5 stars I cherish this book
I have read this book, now titled "The Buddha in Daily Life - an Introduction to Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism," several times since I discovered it at Amazon of the United Kingdom. You can go there throughit's name at the bottom of the screen on the American Amazon site.Ihighly recommend this book if you are interested in Buddhism and interestedin Nam myoho renge kyo, or even if you have been chanting for many years. This book explains it all in the most amazingly profound yeteasy-to-understand way.

I was not a practicing Buddhist when I first readthis book.I was introduced to Nichiren Buddhism and the Soka Gakkai by afriend in Spain and he told me that I should read "The Buddha in DailyLife" to learn everything I wanted to know about this Buddhism.Hewas right.

Needless to say, I did, and have been practicing NichirenDaishonin's Buddhism with the Soka Gakkai of Mexico ever since.I can'tsay enough good things about this book.It changed my life.It helped mediscover true happiness.Muchisimas gracias Richard Causton!

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Buddha in Daily Life - An Introduction to Buddhism"
Mr. Richard Causton, or "Dickie" to those of us who knew and loved him, was the honorable General Director of Soka Gakkai International-United Kingdom (SGI-UK) until his death in 1995 at the age of 75.A couple of years before his passing, Mr. Causton initiated therevision of this book with the assistance of his good friend andprofessional writer Eddy Canfor-Dumas.In what would become one of thefinal major accomplishments of his life's mission, in 1994 Mr. Caustonfinalized the revised text and renamed this book "The Buddha in DailyLife - An Introduction to the Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin."

Tome, "The Buddha in Daily Life" is the greatest book ever writtenin the English language about the practice and study of NichirenDaishonin's Buddhism.I have bought at least ten copies over the past 5years and given them to everyone I know and love - whether they areinterested in practicing Buddhism themselves or simply curious about myBuddhist faith and its philosophy...

Part one of"The Buddha in Daily Life" explains the Buddhist view of life -the theory of the Ten Worlds, the meaning of Nam Myoho Renge Kyo, and a fewinspiring experiences from people who have used this practice to changetheir lives for the better.

Part two covers Buddhism in daily life - thethree pillars of Faith, Practice and Study, the Gohonzon and the SokaGakkai International.

I highly recommend Richard Causton's "TheBuddha in Daily Life" to everyone interested in learning more aboutthe practice of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, as well as to everyone alreadypracticing. My own practice and understanding of Buddhism has been greatlyenriched by it - and for that, I am eternally grateful to the great Mr.Richard Causton.

5-0 out of 5 stars Many insights
I loved this book.It helped me understand many practical applications of Buddhist ideas instead of the esoteric (and powerless) lessons contained in most books about Buddhism.

Before writing this review I read the previousones and I was suprised by the reviewer from Canada's reaction.Perhapsthey have an ax to grind?

Buy this book, read it, and make your ownjudgement.I found it very educational.

1-0 out of 5 stars Book changed in later versions
The big problem with this book today is that it was significantly re-edited after Causton's death from the original version and after the lay organization, Soka Gakkai, was excommunicated from it's religion, Nichiren Shoshu. Causton, though a loyal SGI leader at the time, still wrote a good(yet controversial within the SGI at the time) book. Anyone interested inreading this book should try and seek out the early edition, not the later. ... Read more

Product Description
In 1983, a tiny group of people in Cardiff and a married couple in Aberporth West Wales were the only Welsh members of Soka Gakkai International, a Japanese movement based on the beliefs and teachings of the 13th century Buddhist, Nichiren Daishonin. Today, there are hundreds of members in Wales and the Borders. This book examines the history of the movement in these two areas, and draws on original research gleaned from the members themselves. The research elicits facets of their faith, practices, and study, as well as their testimonies to the success of such beliefs and practices in their daily lives. The book combines the twin goals of academic analysis of the Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin in general with the warmth of its expression in the lives of its adherents in Wales and the Borders. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Work on Nichiren's Writings
As with the 2nd volume, this first work is a much welcomed western academic publication of Nichiren Shonin's writings. Few sources of this quality are available in English, and I hope to see similar works in the future.

The two main works found in this volume are the Rissho Ankoku-ron and Senji-sho, both of which are foundational texts to Nichiren Buddhist doctrine. The book itself is very attractive, easy to use, has introductory comments for each letter, and includes a comprehensive glossary. Another attractive element is that footnotes are kept on the low side, and there is little editorial intrusion upon the body of the texts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Entering Nichiren's World
This is an excellent volume in the ongoing translation project at the University of Hawaii.I understand that it will eventually be seven volumes. It is an excellent introduction to Nichiren's writings and his world.I found it well written, well translated, with a helpful glossary of terms and phrases peculiar to Nichiren's writings, and a good index.

Nichiren is one of the most influential Buddhist teachers in Japanese History. The largest group of Buddhists in the West follow one or more of the many Nichiren traditions. His teachings have a broad appeal across cultural and class lines. Those interested in Nichiren, Japanese Buddhism, and why this form appeals to so many westerners, will find this volume, and the rest from the U. of H. helpful in understanding this great Sage's comprehensive views of the Buddhadharma.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
In Fire in the Lotus, Daniel Montgomery takes on a lot but he does it superbly. I was skeptical at first that a book under 300 pages could do an adequate job of covering Buddhism starting with "The Prince of India"(Chapter 1) and ending in "Other Nichiren Groups Abroad"(Chapter 19) and "To Save All the People of the World" (Chapter 20). My apprehension continued as I detected a pervasive non-scholarly bias in favor of the material. However, I must agree with the previous reviewer who found Montgomery's readability a great alternative to ultra-scholarly Jacqueline Stone's Original Enlightenment and the Transformation of Medieval Japanese Buddhism. Her book is indispensable for an objective understanding of the ideas and currents that shaped Nichiren's Buddhism and the schisms that followed. Yet, it is Fire that held my interest. I have even gone back and re-read several chapters because Montgomery does such a balanced job of presenting relevant details, texts, controversial angles, and ideological nuances. Consequently, he is able to capture what makes particular teachings, individuals, sects, and organizations attractive to their adherents and problematic to outsiders. Thankfully, he does not refrain from including unpleasant details about nearly everyone, including Nichiren. I learned quite a bit about the history of Nichiren Daishonin's life and the various schisms that followed upon his death. Montgomery's traversal of lay organizations like Soka Gakkai (formerly NSA in the US), Reiyukai, Rissho Kosei-kai;Hommon Butsuryu-shu, Nichihonzan, Myohoji, and Buddhist School of America were more than just an excellent introductionto these movements. He really captured the spirit of what made each of these possible and appealing. For some of us who have been familiar only with SGI's version of Buddhist history, this book is both dangerous and enlightening. Montgomery's presentation of Nikkyo Niwano made me want to run out and join Rissho Kosei-kai and subscribe to Dharma World. My only disappointment has been not being able to find out anything about the author. I eventually tired of doing internet searches and coming up dry. I wanted to find out what kind of academic or educational background or ideological inclination produced a mind able to condense lots of complicated material with flawed material and players so effortlessly. This book is an indispensable resource for anyone wanting a relatively brief but thorough view of Buddhism from Shakyamuni to Nichiren Buddhism up until 1990.

4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting alternative
I had been looking forward to reading this book for some time.It is pretty easy reading, compared with more super-scholarly tomes (I'm thinking J.I. Stone). It has an easy, accessible prose style, and at times almost reads like a novel.

Montgomery takes a non-sectarian approach to Nichiren studies (what a relief!) and discusses first the Buddha Shakyamuni, then the Lotus Sutra itself, then Nichiren's life, and finally some of the sects which have grown up since Nichiren's passing. His coverage of the SGI and Nichiren Shoshu pre-dates the "divorce"of 1992, and is an interesting "take" on the old NSA.This chapter is entitled "Have a Gohonzon" after the old Gakkai song. All in all, I would recommend this book to a non-Nichiren beginner as an easy introduction to the history and doctrine of Nichiren Buddhism.I would recommend it to a sectarian believer as a refreshing independent view of how the schools developed.

The version I bought online at Amazon (through a vendor) was only $14, and in paperback.I think the prices being asked online for used copies at this point are way out of line. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Analysis and Information about Buddhism in US
My best friend is a Buddhist who chants with the Soka Gakkai (SGI-USA) and she gave me this book to learn, from an unbiased scholar's viewpoint, what the Soka Gakkai in America is all about.I am very glad I read it, andhave since read many other wonderful books by Daisaku Ikeda as well as aBritish book called "The Buddha in Daily Life," which is myfavorite book on the Soka Gakkai and Nichiren Buddhism.(I think that bookis only available at amazon.co.uk for the moment.)In any case, Irecommend this book "Soka Gakkai in America" by Jane Hurst as aninteresting analysis of history and information about the Soka Gakkaireligious movement in the United States. The author's insights into the"ethos" of this relatively new religious movement are wellconsidered, very interesting and well presented.

1-0 out of 5 stars SGI Disappoints in America
This book looks at the past and present of Soka Gakkai, its interpretation of BuddhismCits current philosophies and its growth in America. In looking at what attracts Americans to this lay-buddhist organization, the authordescribes how faith in Soka Gakkaifs particular brand of proselytizingBuddhism leads to supposed self-development, happiness, peace andprosperity. Nothing is written of how SGI-USA has helped to garner popularsupport for American atrocities across the globe by purposely failing toenlighten SGI-USA members of those atrocities.

In dealing with therelationship between capitalism and Nichiren Buddhism, the author goesfurther awry. Nothing is mentioned of Soka Gakkaifs lucrative businessrelationship with Japanfs largest arms manufacturer while proselytizingSoka Gakkaifs peaceful agenda.

Nothing in this book informs the readerof the dark side of Soka Gakkai: the initiation of infants into theirreligion, Soka Gakkai's business relationships with Japan's largest armsmanufacturer and Soka Gakkai president Ikeda's tacit consent of the humanrights abuses of the world leaders he so often meets.

If one is lookingfor an obective and discerning view of Soka Gakkai, its philosophies andpractices, one won't find it in this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting.
Being a SGI member I approched Mrs Hurst book with some resevation. A lot of ink has been spilled about our organzation and beliefs, however the vast majority of the writers had little to say.I am happy to report that this book actully looks beyond selective reporting and moves into thinking about the framwork of the belifs and cluture of our organzation, both past and present. The best part of the book is the interpatation of the interelationship between capitalism and Nichiren Buddhism. A well thought out book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Buddha in Everyday Life
An excellent introduction to Nichiren Buddhism. It was recommended by a fellow Budddhist and I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in the subject of SGI

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Primer on Nichiren Buddhism
Reading this book was my first encounter with Nichiren Buddhism.I'm not a very religious person and approach everything with skepticism. But I have to say that the author does a real good job of trying to show the Western mind the logic underlying seemingly arbitrary practices such as chanting a certain foreign language phrase everyday.I'm not sure if I'm fully convinced (and there is some information on the internet implying that the SGI is a cult) but either way, the approach of Nichiren Buddhism is very impressive in its positivity and complexity. Thus, I'm pretty intrigued, want to study more, and would like to compare this with other kinds of Buddhism.

In my view, this book can very well serve as a primer on Nichiren Buddhism. It explains a lot of crucial concepts as plainly as possible. In the end, one really appreciates that Buddhism is not (just) a religion, but a way of life. However, the potential reader should not think that this is a book showing some simple ways in which you can practice Buddhism in daily life (such as a list of things you can do when you meet a "difficult" person, or you have an argument with your spouse, or other daily life problems).Instead, it is a book dedicated to explaining to the Western person what Nichiren Buddhism is, with many of its key concepts.

The book is well-written and a pleasant read.I can confidently recommend it for someone who has no idea about the topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I used to check this book out from the library periodically just to refresh myself, and finally realised I should just buy it!
This is a great reference book if you're new or just interested in Buddhism and a great refresher if you're feeling stale and looking to get your faith and practice back on track.
It's a must have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Modern classic
This book thoroughly and meaningfully describes the human condition. Good for anyone seeking therapy, particularly the parts on the ten worlds.

Many times we take therapeutic medicines without understanding the underlying root of the troubles in our lives. We need to understand why our life condition is low and what to do to improve it.

This book has helped me understand how the world of Anger had run amok in my life. This is something no counselor could describe so vividly.

I hope this book helps you!

5-0 out of 5 stars The middle road - the Buddha in Daily Life Nichiren Daishonin

5-0 out of 5 stars Marvelous and hopeful book!
Very rare, and valuable to find a book like this one! Many resign themselves to hopelessness when diagnosed with an illness or a hardship. However, this book sheds light, and contains a hopeful message about approaching our lives and the four sufferings (aging, sickness, death, and birth) with hope, dignity, and meaning. Sophisticated Buddhist concepts (7 centuries old), such as:
the oneness of body and mind; oneness of man and environment; cause and effect, are explained in simple terms.Eastern views of karma, collective karma, karmic suffering, and karmic disease are also discussed, and explained in detail. Profound discussion and analysis of the mind and diseases of the body and mind, psychology, science, health, astronomy, and so much more, are also discussed. Questions such as how we can cultivate the unique potentials that all life has inherent inside itself, as well as ways to overcome challenges in our own individual cosmos (our lives), and that of the entire world itself, are also examined. It becomes increasingly clear, that our individual life, and our beliefs, instantaneously impacts that of another life, either imparting value or worthlessness and of lack of concern, or awareness that the two are one.We have potentials to build ourselves, others, and our planet up, or to destroy ourselves, others, and our planet.Whichever we choose thoroughly affects our individual happiness and has a penetrating effect on our the Cosmos as a whole.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definite Must Read
Being a 22 year old mother and one who grew up in this philosophy, this book provides a truly wonderful explanation of why we believe in the eternity of life.In fact, before reading this book I was confused oncertain aspects of this practice which I was able to understand afterwards. It was also very comforting in terms of dealing with a recent suicide of afriend, knowing that for lifetimes to come I will always be with my friendsand family again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life and death discussed in an open and refreshing manner.
This in-depth look at the very nature of life and death portrays the extensive knowledge and wisdom of Dr. Ikeda on the title subject.I found it to be fascinating and informative and would highly recommend a look atthis profound view of our own humanity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deeply thought-provoking and enlightening
This thought-provoking book is a clear, concise introduction to life and death as viewed by Buddhism.Daisaku Ikeda writes that Buddhist philosophy and its practice provide a vehicle by which people can understand theessence of the universe and therefore surmount the anger, despair, greed, and envy that often arise from ignorance about the true nature of life. Daisaku Ikeda finds a particularly relevant message - that enlightenmentcan be found in the daily lives of ordinary people - in the teachings ofthe thirteenth-century Japanese Buddhist sage Nichiren.

In the firstpart of the book, the author examines issues of birth, longevity, health, sickness, and death as they affect people today. Later chapters areconcerned with explaining fundamental concepts in Buddhist theory.Throughout the book, he illustrates the fascinating correspondence betweenBuddhism and current scientific thought. Complete with a glossary, index, and foreword by noted astronomer Professor N. C. Wickramasinghe, this bookis a wide-ranging, vigorously-written exposition which will challenge andabsorb the non-Buddhist reader as well as those more familiar withBuddhism.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've ever read
I can't praise this book enough. To sum it up briefly:

Buddhism teaches that all individuals innately possess infinite power and wisdom, and reveals the process whereby these qualities can be developed. In this incredible book, Daisaku Ikeda, leader of the world's largest Buddhistorganization, the Soka Gakkai International, explores this premise and itsmeans of realization, while charting the universal relevance of Buddhistthought and practice in today's world.

Buddhist patterns of thought canoffer release from the suffering of birth, old age, sickness and deaththrough a progressive understanding of their place in the cycle ofuniversal existence.

This book is a wide-ranging, vigorously writtenexposition which will challenge and absorb the non-Buddhist reader as wellas the Buddhist.

Highly recommended. ... Read more

Daisaku Ikeda was born of seaweed farmers at ta, Tokyo. He was the fifth son. He had four elder brothers who fought in World War II and also had two younger brothers, and a sister. In 1948, he quit night school, in order to help and work for Toda's publishing business. In return, Toda taught Ikeda literature, history, chemistry, physics, political science, economics, law, mathematics, and Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhist philosophy. In his writings, Ikeda talks about these years from 1948 till Toda's death in 1958 as Golden Years and says that in those days he attended Toda University. As a disciple of Toda, Ikeda...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=563970 ... Read more
