Besides the little that Clemens Alexandrinus tells us incidentally about their sacred literature in the! fifth and sixth book of his Stromata,1 nothing more wi known on the subject than what Herodotus, Diodorus. and especially Plutarch, communicate. If to this we ad the few fragments of Manetho's work in Josephus an Georgios Synkellos, and what has been preserved unde: the form of history in a single scholiast,2 we have summed3 up all the sources from which formerly a dim conception' could be formed of the religious worship of the inhabitants' of the Nile valley. And even, supposing that the accuracy"- of all these sources of information was to be relied on,tf their accounts, with the exception of Plutarch's, are very;1' scanty, and, considering the antiquity of Egyptian civilisa-13 tion, also very recent. Herodotus allows the priests to telirH him whatever tales they choose. Plutarch reproduces then; myth of Isis and Osiris, with on the whole remarkable;11 faithfulness, but he gives it in the form that was mostve acceptable to himself: he had no conception of the thoughtO" originally expressed by it. Moreover, the Greeks were!16 accustomed to hellenise everything and to transfernames of their Olympians to foreign gods, a custom which1111 Stromat., lib. v. p. 237 (Pott. ii. 657), and lib. vi. p. 268 et seq. Product Description
At the beginning of Mesopotamia’s Early Dynastic period, the political landscape was dominated by temple administrators, but by the end of the period, rulers whose titles we translate as "king" assumed control. This book argues that the ritual process of mourning, burying, and venerating dead elites contributed to this change. Part one introduces the rationale for seeing rituals as a means of giving material form to ideology and, hence, structuring overall power relations. Part two presents archaeological and textual evidence for the death rituals. Part three interprets symbolic objects found in the Royal Cemetery of Ur, showing they reflect ideological doctrines promoting the office of kingship. This book will be particularly useful for scholars of Mesopotamian archaeology and history. ... Read more

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Mesopotamian," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Mesopotamian in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Mesopotamian when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Mesopotamian, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Product Description
This text is a collection of studies on a defined problem in Mesopotamian literature. The broad topic of a possible oral or aural character of Akkadian and Sumerian epic poetry and its implications is treated in a number of ways, including a confrontation with traditional Oral-Formulaic Theory, an overview of Sumerian literary types which contrasts putative oral literature with historical literacy, a detailed analysis of the phonic features, and concentrations on specific structural features of Sumerian compositions in order to detect possible markers of either oral origins or aural performance and transmissions. Treating one of the very earliest literary systems mankind ever evolved, it should be of use to literary scholars and specialists in early literatures, as well as assyriologists. The essays originated in a workshop held at the University of Groningen in 1990. ... Read more
