Product Description
Drawing on the hundreds of published cyclinder seals from the Near East, Nijhowne attempts to reduce the gulf between historians and prehistorians. Whilst the former relies on documentary evidence, the latter on material remains, our interpretations about ancient Mesopotamian societies remains debated and often contradictory. Essentially this study investigates the relationship between cylinder seal iconography and the political and religious developments of the Old Babylonian and Kasite periods, with many illustrated examples. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Look at Ancient Mesopotamian Adoption
This book is not an exhaustive study of ancient Mesopotamian adoptions; rather it is a study of a group of related texts many of which deal with adoption. The work contains photographs and hand drawn copies of the texts as well as transliterations and translations of the documents. The work is aimed at a scholarly, rather than a general, audience.

One fascianting fact that emerges from this study is that many adoptions are not adoptions as we would think of them. These adoptions were strictly economic transactions between adult adopters and adoptees and were not designed to add a child to a family.

This study is thorough, yet concise and comes highly recomended. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating story of a time long gone...
Sometimes the story within a story can be far more intriguing. This is the case with "Foundations in the Dust". The story of Mesopotamian exploration in the early part of this century is far more interesting (sometimes) than what was actually discovered. Written by one of the experts, this book is an account of Iraqi archaeology from the first discoveries to the dying days of the pre WWII world. The real thing is far more interesting than any Indiana Jones story!! ... Read more

Product Description
Tell Brak in Syria is one of the largest and most important multi-period sites in northern Mesopotamia. Excavations in 1994-1996 cast new light on everyday life at the settlement through several phases of occupation from the early 4th millennium BC to the 2nd millennium BC. This monograph provides an account of the architecture, artefacts, and environmental evidence, supported by a program of radiocarbon dating. The results emphasize the indigenous nature of cultural development in Upper Mesopotamia during these millennia. Among the highlights are a small temple dating to the Ninevite 5 period (earlier 3rd millennium BC), which provides new insights into a phenomenon that has hitherto been little explored; and an exceptional hoard of precious materials and artefacts that underlines the importance of Brak in the later 3rd millennium BC. The report is completed by studies of subsistence, diet, economy, use of space, and craft activities, which focus on the variabilities and continuities in daily life that underlay the shifting political and cultural forces. These studies highlight the unique position of Tell Brak in the long-term ebb and flow of regional interactions across Mesopotamia.Roger Matthews is Lecturer in the archaeology of Western Asia at University College London. ...
