In fact, this whole civilized society treats most people of the boy's class - aboriginal villagers - unjustly.The boy magnanimously endures not one, but two slaving family settings and lives to tell his story. His jubilation is short-lived when he enters the United States, only to find racial and ethnic discrimination. These discriminations engulfs him, rekindling his memory of former hardships and causing him to reflect on those troubles he has been through as well as how those troubles affected his tribal people.Finally the boy's education forces him to recollect his calamity and the calamity of his people of tribal villagers. He reflects on their treatment, both good and bad, by the Western world (America and other non-African countries) as a whole. The boy also invokes memories of his early tribal life before going to a civilized city and his coming to the United States.The boy also challenges the West and Western companies about some of the ills caused by their business activities in his former country. I have brought several Kessinger reprints. I'm actually a big fan, so the decision to bag them out about this reproduction has not been made lightly. I accept marginalia, inksplots, even missing pages, as part and parcel of dealing with old books. Inept scanning is not acceptable (even for under $50): see pp.10, 21-22, 25-26, esp. 46 [illegible because scanner moved page], 65, 73, 77, 78-80 [skipped, not "missing"], 108, 174, 194-195, 197, 198, 201, 202, 204, 206-207, 208, 210, 211, 214, '211' [the original is mispaginated from here on out], '220', '222', '224', 226', '230'. These are not the result of the book being "old and scarce". That there was a lack of attention on the part of the scanner and printer is confirmed by the fact that Kessinger's agents have not even bothered to look beyond the title page's ascription to "Mr. Toland" to determine that the author's name is John Toland. If you want a decent reproduction, download the PDF from ECCO (for Australians available through the National Library) and print and bind it yourself. I bet the cost would be comparable, and it's by far a better reproduction that this mess, which (if I'm not mistaken) has been taken from Google Books. Toland is brilliant, but don't buy this. ...
