Excellent book... Must read for Prince Hall Masons

This is a excellent book. I read this when I joined a prince hall freemasonry. Also I was to know that majority of Elijah Muhammad teachings is closely related to masonary and our ancient ancestors. Interesting information
This is a good book. I read it years ago it helped spark my interest in Fremasonry when I was studying Elijah Muhammad information.I also suggest African Origins of Freemasonry by Zachary Gremillion,Huevolution Sacred Muur Science by Timothy Myers El,and Moorish Circle Seven by Keith Moore.

Ancient Egyptians?
As an introduction to the Crata Repoa (which is an interesting document that used to circulate in masonic and paramasonic circles) this is a good book.It is however, highly speculative that the Ancient Egyptians practiced these rituals, so the title is somewhat misleading.

Egyptian Speculation
While I enjoyed this book, I think its title is misleading.The connections between the Egyptian Mysteries and anything resembling Freemasonry, at least that of the last several centuries, is very tenuous.Furthermore, it is not clear to me that the details of the Egyptian ceremonies described are more than speculation. If you would enjoy such speculation, as I did, that's fine. Otherwise, beware.

Thoughts on "Freemasonry of the Ancient Egyptians"
This is a great book, but not an easy read. There is much here to be readseveral times and pondered upon.

The author states his purpose in writingthe book is: "To suggest an interpretation of Egyptian metaphysicaltradition in harmony with with the teachings set forth in what we call themysteries."

In the introduction, the author lodges a valid criticismof some academics in the fields of Egyptology and archaeology. He makes adistinction between two types of academics. The first are those who are tooclose to the to see the trees. They are "materialistic mindedmen" bent on maintaining their reputations and place in the academiccommunity. Terrified of controversy and change. Unwilling to acceptconclusions and new theories based on the latest scientific methods. Thesecond group are those bold enough to speculate on new ideas based tomodern exploration and research. These people are unafraid to reveal theirconclusions to public scrutiny.

This work will be of interest tohard-core students of Freemasonry, especially those who are open-minded andinclined to search for the roots of Freemasonry among the ancientEgyptians.

To the Master Mason interested in the origins of the Craft,the section dealing with the "Crata Repoa" will be quiteinteresting. To avoid forming the misconception that he is reading thenarrative of a modern ritual The reader must keep in mind the author isdealing with a ritual that could only have originated in ancient Egypt andpassed down through the ages. Ultimately, the reader must make up his ownmind about the information presented by the author.

In chapter Four,"The Secret Doctrine of Egypt", Freemasons will be fascinated bythe author's treatment of the "Widow's Son".

Those who are notmembers of the Masonic fraternity may have difficulty grasping some of theconcepts relating to Freemasonry presented by the author.

Manly P. Hallwas raised on November 22, 1954 in Jewel Lodge No. 374. In 1990 Mr Hall waselevated to the 33d degree, the highest honor and degree inFreemasonry.

The author has written other books on Freemasonry: "The Lost Keys of Freemasonry"; Masonic Orders of theFraternity"; and "The Secret Destiny of America".

Anextremely interesting section of the book presents the author's perspectiveconcerning the "Curse of Tutankhamen's Tomb".

Essential Reading
This is a book that merits a shelf all on it's own. In my own little library are the best and worst of books on this subject, but this one does the best and most believable job altogether. I commend it.

Not Much New
This book is basically a rehash of much old information, with little to instill new debate.

A rare find amongst the myriad of speculative theories
This book presents as one of the best researched in the area of the history of freemasonry. The author has no hidden agendas to meet and so does not dabble in speculation - which unfortunately is becoming the "norm" for books on this topic.

As a thoroughly researched volume it does tend to bog down in names, dates and details, but this only lends more support to it's validity.

If you want a book that cuts through the nonsense you'll read in 60% of what others offer, and yet makes the history it documents almost as diverting as the wild speculations found in other books, this is the book for you. You will learn much.

Maybe not your idea of secret
In looking at the title, I was expecting something along the lines of a book which was one part conspiracy theory and one part history.Something about the aura of freemasonry draws these kinds of thoughts to the fore.However, the author is giving us a historical explanation of the origins of the freemasons along with a bit of history about the Knights Templar.

First, the author tells us the distinction between operative freemasonry and speculative Freemasonry (the capitalization is the author's).The first refers to the organizations of builders.The second refers to the organizations which arose many centuries later and had not connected with the builders, but are the organizations we think of today when we think of Freemasons.

The book is not the easiest of reads as it was not designed as a quick narrative of suspense as are most books of Freemasonry.The author, very diligently, walks the reader through history to show how religion, government, and culture were united, spread, or opposed by the groups of builders.Without an understanding of architecture and a background in ancient history, this can be a little hard to follow.It is, nonetheless, very educational to watch the connections across the European and Asian continents.

This may not be the most exciting of reads, but it was not intended to be.It will provide the reader a more ancient and grounded understanding of the organization which became Freemasons.

This one vol. belongs on your short list of books to read which connects the dots between the ancient Knights Templar & modern day Freemasonry.Due yourself a big favor and enlighten yourself with some important historical insights.Unburden your mind of previous theories which refuse to go back to what actually happened.
A novel like the Da Vinci Code this is NOT.
I am talking real scholarship from a translated text written by a Frenchman who knows how life was like in his country hundreds of years ago.
This author causes one to see into the past and understand how the culture really operated at this place & time.
Kind of rare to find a book like this any longer - just the facts please madam.

I can't understand why people write or buy this stuff.
Freemasons are a group of men looking to better the community.They rescue young people who suffer from broken bones and who are burn victims fly them to a Shriners hospital, put them back together and fly them back home all without cost, or asking them to join or even understand why.They are excepting of all races and religions, yet somehow they are constantly bashed for that because of some verses in the bible that people interpret in their own way. If helping poor unfortunate kids for no profit or gain is the devil's work, then where do I sign? I feel strongly that the only reason that these "churchs" bash freemasonry is that they will say or do anything to make sure that their members only spend their time and their money with the "church" that they belong to.Anyone who truly wants to research these "Facts" that Mr. Harris speaks about needs to look at a book titled "Is It True What They Say About Freemasonry" and keep in mind: "They who live in glass houses...."Is it True What They Say About Freemasonry?

Waste of time
I'm a Christian first of all because I was born in a Christian family. I could be a Muslin or Buddhist... I strongly disagree that attack people, institutions or other religions is the rightway of living. Mr. Harris simply attack not only the Masonic Institution but all religions by saying that only "our" God is the real one. God is only one for all the universe, doesn't matter what religion you were raised in. But each of us can interpret whatever we want... Mr. Harris knows how to interpret in order to make money. Congratulations for him as a business man (only). However I think we lose more than we gain aggressing each other.

Another Misinterpretation of Masonry
I am a Christian who holds to the five fundamentals of the faith.I am grieved and disappointed that this kind of misinterpretation is taking place among Bible-believing Christians.After reading a few titles along this same line, I see a correlation between believers who insist upon taking everything literally and anti-Masonic rhetoric.Freemasonry is full of allegories and symbolism, a point this author refuses to acknowledge. There is also an absence here of acknowledging that Freemasonry operates on general, not special, revelation.

If you're looking for a good, sound critique of Freemasonry, this one isn't it.Freemasonry isn't perfect by any means, but it also isn't occultic.I recommend "Born in Blood" by Robinson or "The Meaning of Masonry" by Wilmhurst as much more reputable titles.

I have studied many religions in my youth such as Buddhism, Hinduism, Muslim, Kabala, Wicca, Shamanism, and many other Occults in order to heighten my Martial Art Mental abilities so I know a little about the subject.

My Family has been Southern Masons traced back over 200 years! Grand Parents, Great Uncles & Aunts, Parents, Uncles, Aunts, Cousins all of which were Demolays, Rainbows, Masons, Eastern Stars & Shriners! All were God Fearing Southern Baptist, so I have heard it all about how great this organization is and mocked for over 10 years now for believing they were being lead astray from the true teachings of the Christian Holy Bible.

It was not until I embraced my Christian roots about 10 years ago did all the dark secrets emerge from my Masonic family. Everything they did in their rituals were OCCULT, Everything they believed lead them away from the Bible not closer to it as they thought or intended.

I would like to say that most Masons, Eastern Stars, etc. are honest, hard working, God fearing Christians who just don't understand! They think that by preaching the gospel, claiming to be Christians and raising money for charities that this organization is some kind of Christian icon in the world and void of wrongdoing.

Well even Satan believes in God, can quote the Bible and can help his followers to prosper! ***So, Does that make him a good Christian?***

I challenge anyone involved in this organization that believes themselves to be a Christian to study the Bible and compare the Do Not's in the Bible against the Do's in their Masonic practices. Also study some Occult books and see the similarities in the rituals you do.

The Better Angels of Our Nature
Up until now, we had only anecdotal evidence of how Masons helped each other during the Civil War (and other conflicts.)This book, however, attempts to add sound historical rigor to the quest--and by and large succeeds admirably.

Better Angles has scholastic underpinnings
Michael Halleran has taken what is often sensationalized to the point of being near fiction and through solid research and scholarship has accurately presented the role of Freemasonry in the American Civil War. He not only sets the record straight on one of the more romanticized stories revolving around participants at Picket's Charge at Gettysburg, but he documentsreal accounts of events in the prison camps and battles involving Freemasons and the fraternal culture that crossed battlelines and political obstructions for the benefit of its members. The notes section at the end of the book gives the serious scholar of this subject a multitude ofresources. It is an easy read of a complex subject.

Outstanding
Michael Halleran's"The Better Angels of Our Nature," is an outstanding, in-depth study of interactions between Freemasons during the American Civil War. Halleran's title comes from Abraham Lincoln's inaugural address on March 4, 1861, as he argued passionately before his audience and the nation to keep the Union together.

It accomplishes what few books about Freemasons are able to do: it explores the legends and long-told tall tales of the fraternity in an academic fashion, with both dispassionate analysis of the facts, and an obvious passion for the subject. Personal accounts from the Civil War have the effect of humanizing the experience, instead of being able to hold it at a polite distance, perhaps because it was the first war that had, not just commanders, but so many enlisted men educated enough to write letters and diaries. Along the way, Michael shatters several longstanding and cherished Masonic fables, but he reinforces and illuminates far more than he buries. And he finds the humanity and real truth behind events in the war that pitted brethren against each other more than any other.

History Lesson
An illuminating look at Freemasonry from it's inception through modern times.De-bunks the myths and legends that have painted this group as an "evil empire" surreptitiously pulling the world's strings, but also lets us know that they are not "your lovable grandpa wearing a funny hat". I found the book to be very informative historically and was amazed to learn how many of our founding fathers were associated with or influenced by this group as well as their impact on our countries wars i.e., The American Revolution, Civil War, etc.Not only is this book an informative look at Freemasonry, it is contains a valuable look at U.S. history.

stonemasons of the medieval period, through the
creation of the Masonic Ritual of three degrees, the
formation of grand Lodges, and the early Masonic

Ritual itself, specially as he discusses the
philosophy and symbolism of the society. Notable also,
Millar discusses the theories of Masonic historians
regarding, for example, the possibility of influences from Cabala, English mystic Robert Fludd, the Knights Templar, alchemy, etc., one the one hand, and geometry, astronomy, and Isaac Newton on the other.

There is also a section dedicated to the
growth of Freemasonry in America, and its influence on
such notable figures as Benjamin Franklin and George Washington.

The chapters (with a brief description of each)

Introduction:

An overview of Masonic history. Millar also explains
some of the vocabulary peculiar to Freemasonry, such
as `token,' which originally meant `symbol'.

1. The Legend of The Craft:
This section looks at the mythology of the medieval
builders and how and why it was adoptedby
Freemasonry, quoting from manuscripts dating from the
late 14th century.Also discussed is the use of
rituals by trade guilds such as the French Companions,
often regarded as related to Freemasonry.

2: An Exchange of Secrets:
A discussion of the intellectual background to
Freemasonry - the publication in England of Euclid's `Elements'
with its preface by astrologer, John Dee; the first
appearance of the (later Masonic symbol of) the Square
and Compasses, etc.

3: Freemasonry and Rosicrucianism:
A discussion of the original Rosicrucian group in
Germany and its possible link with, or influence on, the
nascent Freemasonry. There are numerous quotes from
seventeenth century reports of the supposed connection
of the two societies.

4: The Three Degrees:
The founding of the first Grand Lodge and the
official establishment of Freemasonry. A discussion of
the symbolism of the first three degrees of
Freemasonry.

5: Drafting the Foundation:
A discussion of the symbolism of Solomon's Temple in both Freemasonry and in the work of scientists who may
have influenced Freemasonry, such as Newton and
Bacon. An exploration of the symbolism of geometry in
Masonry, especially regarding the early practice of
drawing a plan of the Lodge on the floor.

6: The Royal Art:
An exploration of the Royal Arch degree, as well as
the possible influences of the English mystic, Robert
Fludd and the German astronomer, Johannes Kepler. A
discussion of the Masonic symbol of the beehive and
esoteric Masonry.

7: The Golden Fleecing:
An examination of mystical Masonic societies in
eighteenth century Europe, such as the Golden
Rosicrucians, Memphis and Mizraim, etc. Particular
attention is paid to the Masonic symbol of the Golden

8: The Higher Degrees Established:
An explanation of why Freemasonry today has many
various rituals, degrees, and `Rites'. An examination
of the history and symbolism of the most important of
the higher degrees, such as the Rose Croix and the

9: Pledging Allegiance:
Freemasonry in America. Its influence on Franklin and Washington, the Civil War, etc.

10: Last Rites:
The creation of mystical societies by Freemasons, such
as the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia, and the
Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. The relationship of
theearly Theosophical Society to Freemasonry. Other
societies discussed are the Shriners and the Grotto.
In particular this section explores the various,
though almost unknown, myths of the Shriners' origins

Some valid information but interesting stuff in the end
I am just now finishing up this book, and I have been fairly pleased with it.I have been trying to understand more about the mason organization especially since my great grandfather was a high ranking mason, most of the preachers in my hometown are masons, and I have many friends who are masons or who have been asked to become masons.The first book that I read on the subject was a book by the name of Mysterious Monuments written by Texe Marrs and the second book was The New World Order by Epperson.Out of all of these books, I would probably recommend Finney's book the least.I believe if I had to do it over I would have started with Epperson's book even though the timeline that the cult leaders were presenting at that time failed it is still a very informative book, I believe I would follow it up with this book, and I would finish with Texe Marrs book (just because this book gives you signs to recognize the cultish beliefs that the other two books establish).This book focuses mainly on the so-called Christian freemasonry.Once you read this book though, you will find out that there is no such thing as Christian freemasonry because masons take oaths to cover up the crimes of other masonic brothers.We can all agree that this is a sin therefore unchristian.In addition to this, Finney brings up the fact that Christians are not supposed to take oaths especially oaths upon the penalty of death.This is a fact not emphasized in church much anymore but it used to be very important to the early christians in this nation.He focuses on this point for quite a while; however if you can get through this point repeated over and over, he will get to the universalist nature of the masonic cult.He will also cover how some of the higher ranks of freemasonry consider the church as the enemy.Marrs and Epperson take this point a little further to their belief that masons are actually a satanistic cult when you get to the higher levels.They really make a good point with solid evidence.I think it is good to read this book because Finney was a mason at one time.Also Finney was one of the leading preachers in the great awakening here in the United States.It is good to have a source with such credibility.This is not to knock the credibility of the other books because Texe Marrs is an author who has one of the highest registered I.Q. scores in our nation.Therefore, he is not an idiot.Finney and Marrs differ on a point of whether george washington was an active mason.George Washington denied this accusation in a personal letter that Finney reproduces in his book; however, George did admit that he had attended a few meetings throughout his lifetime.The influx of the illuminati (which George Washington feared) into freemasonry has really warped masonry over the past two centuries; however, they are a very big part of freemasonry.They are some of the main leaders of freemasonry currently so I say that the illuminati and freemasonry should now be considered one and the same.Well, I think this lets you get the point of the book.I think it is an important read in a Christian's searching of what exactly is the true nature of freemasonry. ... THE BOOK OF BOOKS
This is one heavy brick of a book! From page one Albert Pike leads us through the 33 degrees of The Ancient and Scottish Rite, theoretically. The rituals themselves are not described, the book functions as a sort of theory injection to the rituals. "Morals and Dogma" is the Magnum Opus of Albert Pike, written exclusively for Scottish Rite masons, but other mason will enjoy this book too, I would say that anyone with any interest in history, philosophy, ethics and esotericism will find this extremely helpful.
Albert Pike shows through this book how Freemasonry consists of several religions, not only one. He takes us through the similiarities in all religions, and tries to find the true essence in all of them. This will be helpful for christian masons who think that Freemasonry only is about Jesus and Hiram Abiff. Pike shows us that the Order has a lot of its history and symbolism from Zoroaster and the Indo Aryans, worshippers of Fire and Light.
From the ethical, simple working tools of the Blue Lodge, to the christian ethics and mysticism of the Chapter of Rosy Cross, to the Aryan and Parsee worshipping of Light, which the Templars continued from the essenees and the Zoroastrians, this books leads the reader through darkness and light, laughter and bafflement, to education and deep thought, dicipline.
A non-mason will also enjoy this book, filled with speculations and facts about the religions that affect the world so much. I recommend this book so much and whole heartedly that I am out of words now. Enjoy .:.

If you're a freemason, this book is for you...
For a factual history of freemasonry, written by a true historian and freemason, this book is probably the most complete and factual. And it was written more than one hundred years ago.

While author Robert Gould, a 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason, relies on proven historical method in trying to determine the origins of Free and Accepted masonry (unlike almost every other author of masonic history), he does examine all of the most common theories.

Beware, however, that this book was written in the day when writing was an educated art, and have your Complete Oxford English Dictionary close at hand. ... Read more

"The Cloudy Mists of Antiquity" may no longer remain...
Albert Churchward deciphers and reads the ancient writings on the walls of ruined temples and in the cities in Africa, Asia, and North, Central, and South America and had discovered (not alone) how to decipher and read ancient papyri. He continually gives us the keys to unlock the mysteries of the past and reveals the origins of the Signs, Symbols and Rituals of FreeMasonry. A well written history, I found this book to be a very good read...enlightening...

Masonry in Ancient Egypt!
I have not read this book yet, but I read Signs and Symbols of Primordial Man. This is a very important book in revealing the ancient origins of the Masonic Order in Africa/Egypt. I also suggest African Origins of Freemasonry by Zachary P. Gremillion which is an illuminating book for Black and White Freemasons.

Masonic History from an EnglishViewpoint
R. A. Gilbert's introduction to this book is quite interesting, and well worth reading by itself. The present book reflects the viewpoint of a man who was interested in the 'lost continents' of Atlantis and Lemuria.
It was said that pursuing an original printing of this book was what brought forth Mark Twain's famous comment concerning the rapid aging of the Masonic Fraternity, 'From both directions.'
That being said, for someone interested in the history of Freemasonry, this book is a worthwhile addition to their library.It is particualrly beneficial that it is now available in an inexpensive edition. The older editions are too costly to be worth purchasing. While it should not be the first Masonic history purchased, it certianly may be used to provide some interesting background material to the Masonic scholar.

More education and knowledge for Freemasons!
This book is an excellent tool to help in your lodge work.Of course take some of it with a grain of salt just because we all know that there are some lodges with some masons who may do things a tad different, though not off center by any means.

This book differs from other instruction because it not only has the "how" but explains in detail the "why" behind it.I found it very useful for my library of masonic reading and turn to it often if I have a question on something.

The overall use of it is necessary if becoming a mason, or already one, for the fact it has definitions and terms that will help you no matter what lodge or branch of the fraternity you may be affiliated with.

A Christian and a Mason II
This is a well though out and very well documented book. Mr. de Hoyos and Mr. Morris have done an outstanding job in putting together information that takes the myths, lies and misinformation over the last few hundred years and clears the air.

For too many years the writers of anti-Masonry "propagada" have written about their lack of understanding or ignorance of what Freemasonry is all about. They try to present Freemasonry as a dark and evil secret. Again,I say, Hooey! Read this book.

There are too many people in the world today who have a lack of understanding about Freemasonry. The reason, the negative about a subject is always the easiest to find. Trying to find the positive is a bit more difficult as one has to weed out all the other stuff.

Too many writers are writing about Freemasonry for the purpose of profit and personal gain and in which they themselves have NO experience in the matter which they are writing. They refer to and rely on someone else's information on the subject only to find out that writer has no "first hand" experience either, just what they read from someone else. This has become a danger in our society.

Mr. de Hoyos and Mr. Morris both have many years of first hand knowledge and experience in Freemasonry and have done an excellent job in de-bunking all the misinformation about Freemasonry. Their sources are well documented and listed for your own inspection.

I am an Evangelical Christian Pastor and excited to be a Christian first and a Mason second. Being a Mason has helped me be better at both.

I have enjoyed reading "Is It True What They Say About Freamasonry" a second time and will continue to endorse it and recommend it to anyone who has 'serious' questions about Freemasonry.

Very good book. Well planned and carefully written. It answers a lot of false tales told by people who are afraid of Masonry because they don't know anything about Masonry. Gives good references to prove their point.

Excellent Defense of the Craft
I read this book about a year ago and i have been meaning to re-read it. It is an excellent and well-documented book defending Freemasonry. Anyone looking to better their understanding of Freemasonry (in a balanced way) should read this book.

A Well-reasoned Reply To Those Who Calumniate Freemasonry
Throughout history there have been those who calumniate the Craft of Freemasonry.Some of the claims made by anti-Masons are simply misguided, but more often the claims against Freemasonry are made by those who have a personal and often mercenary motive in spreading these falsehoods.

In "Is It True What They Say About Freemasonry?" Arturo de Hoyos, 33� and S. Brent Morris, Ph.D., 33� look at many of the charges leveled against Freemasonry and offer thoughtful, detailed and referenced responses to these accusations.

We learn of Leo Taxil's "Luciferian Masonry" hoax; and although the hoax has been completely disproved, even to the point of Taxil admitting his deception, there are still anti-Masons writers who fall for the hoax and write as if it were true.

We read the anti-Masonic claims of Pastor Ron Carlson of the `Christian Ministries International'.Carlson's misquotes of Albert Pike are exposed by showing what Pike really wrote.When the actual words of Albert Pike are read in the light of Carlson's anti-Masonic claims, Carlson appears almost nonsensical.

The anti-Masonic claims of former Freemason, the Rev. James Shaw, author of the book "The Deadly Deception" are disproved beginning with Shaw's claims on the cover of his book that he was a 33-degree Mason, the Past Master of a Blue Lodge, and the Past Master of all Scottish Rite ~ none of which are true!

In "Is It True What They Say About Freemasonry" we read a number of letters exchanged between anti-Mason T.N. Sampson and the book's co-author S. Brent Morris.In these letters Morris replies to questions posed by Sampson and disproves many of Sampson's anti-Masonic claims.

We also read responses to the claims made by Pastor David S. Janssen in "A Sermon on the Rituals of Freemasonry", Ron Campbell and `Charisma Magazine' and someone calling himself "Enchanter" who posted numerous anti-Masonic rants to the Internet.

This book will perhaps not change the mind of the ardent anti-Mason, nor will it be of much value to one who has only a passing interest in Freemasonry.But, for the Mason and for the man of reason who wonders if it's true what some have said about Freemasonry, this book is a "Must Read".A thoughtful reading will add to your knowledge, it will serve as a basis for further research should you choose to do it, and more importantly it will add to your estate of wisdom when it comes to understanding the teachings and meanings of Freemasonry!

Freemasons On Trial.
Only recently while riding public transit, I heard two bus drivers discussing the 'fact' that Masons are devil worshipers.
This was my first encounter with that type of prejudiceand innocently spoke up to say "it is a secret society but in no way do they worship the devil."I talked about seeing them in the movie, 'National Treasure' (the treasure was found under a large New York church -- way in the dungeons -- which I found strange, and a graveyard did figure into the puzzle).

The freemasons organization was formed in London in 1717.In America, it has had a rocky past because of miscreants who some way managed to infiltrate and give them a bad name.A member of my extended family was a Mason.He was not an ethical person, and a confirmed alcoholic, and I always wondered how he had pulled that coup to get into a prestigious group.But, you can't blame a whole society which incoporates foreign countries on one individual.I said to the drivers, "Many important people and United States Presidents have been known as Masons."

Little did I know about all the controversy as expressed in this book from many sources and Baptists who have spread the rumor in print and on the Internet.It's sad when superstition and immoral people bring about such potentially slanderous assertions.The Southern Baptists will believe anything; they even use their preachers to tell from the pulpit who the congregation should vote for in national elections.That is the opposite of 'separation of church and state.'I said, "No one tells me how to vote."

The Masons universal message is of brotherhood, relief, and truth.It does not include religious beliefs.The person I know who was iniated into that group was Methodist.Reputations are tarnished by some unruly church activities and false rumors.Until you know for sure you are hearing the truth and nothing but the truth, "consider the source."

A Serious Work for Scholars of Freemasonry
Mackey was a doctor, the son of a wealthy family in Charleston, SC in the nineteenth century. He practiced medicine briefly, then dedicated himself to Masonic research. This work is only somewhat dated, given that Freemasonry is a relatively stable cultural and sociological phenomenon. Still, some historiographical, archival and archeological work accomplished since his day has corrected some of his views (these defects are less found in his Encyclopedia).

The value of his work lies in the fact that he explores, in forty-four chapters, numerous myths about the origins of Freemasonry, concluding at the end of each chapter that no single theory is sufficient to explain the history of the Royal Art or that many of the theories are pure fabrications. He does not make any definite conclusions about its ultimate origins, leaving the reader to agree with professor Frances Yates who stated in her book The Rosicrucian Enlightenment (Routledge Classics) that Freemsonry's origins are a "mystery wrapped in an enigma".

History Book? Nope.
If you are looking for a history book, then you've come to the wrong place.Basically, it is a chapter by chapter evaluation of the myth of where Freemasonry came from along with Mackey stating at the end, this is not correct.This goes on for each chapter and by the 3rd or 4th, you can just turn to the last page in the chapter and read the synopsis and you will get the gist of the entire chapter.

Masonic Reference
Excellent for the new or Master Mason,for use at home or in the Lodge

Worth reading
This is a wonderfully written book. May be difficult for some readers as some parts are in Old English. Keep in mind that Mackey is discussing 'legend' not known fact.

Values and Beliefs, Not History
This is a beautiful book, and wonderful- if you recognize it as what it is.It is a collection of myths about the origins of Freemasonry, not a factual history.It does what all of our myths of our origins do- illustrate the principles and ideas we believe in.Many of the legends presented within are, in fact, unverifiable- such as the one that posits that Masonic secrets were hidden within pillars that survived the biblical Great Flood.
