Excerpt: The Horace Mann School is an independent college preparatory school in New York City founded in 1887. Horace Mann offers courses from nursery school to the twelfth grade and is a member of the Ivy Preparatory School League. The Upper, Middle, and Lower Divisions are located in Riverdale, a neighborhood of the Bronx, while the Nursery School is located in Manhattan and the John Dorr Nature Laboratory, a 265-acre (1.07 km) campus in Washington Depot, Connecticut, is the school's outdoor education and environmental education center. The school was founded in 1887 by Nicholas Murray Butler as a co-educational experimental and developmental unit of Teachers College at Columbia University. Its first location was a building at 9 University Place in Manhattan's Greenwich Village. The school moved in 1901 to 120th Street in Morningside Heights. Columbia University followed suit soon afterwards, moving northwards to its present campus. The name of the school can still be seen on the northern-most building at the Columbia campus, named Horace Mann Hall, after education reformer Horace Mann. However, Horace Mann was becoming a school in its own right instead of a teaching laboratory, and it became more independent of the Columbia University and Teachers College. The Teachers College therefore created the Lincoln School, located on 110th Street, across the street from Central Park, to continue its experiments in teaching. Shedding its co-educational roots, the school split into separate all-male and all-female schools. In 1912, the Boys' Schoo...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=672773 ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Valuable View into a Critical Period for the Ethical Culture Movement
"An Evaluation of the Philosophy and Pedagogy of Ethical Culture" is a disseration by Samuel Frederick Bacon for Catholic University.
The thesis was written in 1933, the year Felix Adler, the Ethical Movement founder, died. Adler was a powerful force for the movement, and a philosophical leader respected widely. His death was a blow to the Movement which had by then many leaders, but none that could match his singular influence.

The thesis is a thorough review of Ethical Culture's views and educational practices. Bacon confessed he didn't understand exactly Adler's more complex theories, but also points out that almost nobody else--including the leaders of the Movement--comprehended them either. He also described the various leaders at the time, whose views ranged widely.

Bacon gives a good solid Catholic criticism of the Movement's philosophy (but it wasn't emotional or harsh, like modern discourse), and suggested the Catholic Church could learn from the Ethical Culture's educational system (which, at the time was amazingly progressive, and whose attributes has been widely adopted). He also recommended that priests speak on "Bringing out the Best in Others, and Thereby Ourselves," since it was a good reformulation of the Golden Rule. Bacon was clear that these good ideas of Ethical Culture had could be adopted without damage to the Church.

I was impressed most by two aspects of Bacon's dissertation:

First, the hard work the author put into understanding the Ethical Culture Movement by reading its material and talking to members. No secondary sources for him. He could also apparently read German, and even made reference to the German Society for Ethical Culture, which didn't survive the Nazi period.

Second, the author, although he fundamentally disagreed with the philosophy, was quite willing to explain its position, and never was harsh or unfair in his critiques.

Frankly, his thesis is far superior in research, thought, analysis, and dispassionate writing than many popular books on religion.Bacon also apparently wrote a review of Scouting which I have not read, but I'm sure would be interesting and valuable to those interested in education, scouting, and history.

The disseration contains a valuable bibliography and index. ... Read more

The Ethical Culture Movement is an ethical , educational , and religious movement. Individual chapter organizations are generically referred to as Ethical Societies , though their names may include "Ethical Society," "Ethical Culture Society," "Society for Ethical Culture," "Ethical Humanist Society", or other variations on the theme of "Ethical."Ethical Culture is premised on the idea that honoring and living in accordance with ethical principles is central to what it takes to live meaningful and fulfilling lives, and to creating a world that is good for all. Practitioners of Ethical Culture focus on supporting one another in becoming better people, and on doing good in the world.Ethical perspective While Ethical Culturists generally share common beliefs about what constitutes ethical behavior and the good , individuals are encouraged to develop their own personal understanding of these ideas. This does not mean that Ethical Culturists condone moral relativism , which would relegate ethics to mere preferences or social conventions. Ethical princi... ... Read more

Robert Oppenheimer (April 22, 1904 February 18, 1967) was an American theoretical physicist and professor of physics at the University of California, Berkeley. He is best known for his role as the scientific director of the Manhattan Project, the World War II effort to develop the first nuclear weapons at the secret Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. For this reason he is remembered as "The Father of the Atomic Bomb". In reference to the Trinity test in New Mexico, where his Los Alamos team first tested the bomb, Oppenheimer famously recalled the Bhagavad Gita: "If the radiance of a thousand suns were to burst at once into the sky, that would be like the splendor of the mighty one." and "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds." After the war Oppenheimer was a chief advisor to the newly created United States Atomic Energy Commission and used that position to lobby for international control of nuclear power and to avert the nuclear arms race with the Soviet Union.
