2-0 out of 5 stars Wrond Edition; buy the 1928 BCP
The tradition of common prayer and the theology of worshipping as we believe runs to the heart of the classic Anglican Way (i.e. reformed catholicism). Unfortunatly, the venerable Book of Common Prayer as originally created by Archbishop Cranmer is no more. In the 1970's the "reformers" replaced it with a modern, up to date version. Well, as C.S.Lewis said, "What is not eternal is eternally out of date". The 1979 BCP is flawed theologically and liturgically; much beyond what I can adequatley address in an essay of this length.
But don't take my word for it; buy a copy of the American 1928 edition, or the English edition of 1662 and decide for yourself. Both books are available from Oxford University Press, or the American Prayer Book Society in Philadelphia, Pa.
God bless you in your journey.

IN THE course of History there have been many and various forms of religion, some of which no longer exist and a large part of which never pbtained more than local or temporary importance. oday there are eleven giving world religions, among which is Chris tianity. Much of its teaching and isolated beliefs may be found in these other religions, but in one thing it is unique it alone among all the revealed religions claims that God Himself made the revelation of Himself in the Person of His Son Jesus Christ, and thereby showed men what God was like and what God wanted men to be like and that He imparts to them today the strength necessary to fulfil this purpose, if they seek it according to His will. The other religions claim that the divine revelation came through a prophet, as in. Mohammedanism, or else through some lesser god, as in the ancient Hermetic cults, but never through the Supreme God Himself. Jesus Christ, in order to perpetuate the revelation which God had made in Him, gathered about Him self a group of disciples from whom He chose an inner circle which were known as the Twelve, and later as the Apostles. At the time of His death on the cross they all deserted Him, but after His resurrection He in spired them with new hope and they went forth to carry to the world the Gospel, die good news about the salvation to be obtained through faith in Him. For the first hundred years or so of Christian his tory the early disciples expected the imminent return of Christ from heaven in glory to judge the world. Consequently, they made no provision for the future or the carrying on of their message beyond their own generation. The early development of the Church came as a result of its adjustment to the fact of the de layed return of Christ, Hie first Jerusalem disciples continued to worship in the Temple, forming a synagogue of the Nazarene, which differed from the other synagogues only in their belief that Jesus Christ was the Messiah predicted by the Scriptures, and that He was about to return to judge the world and to set up His Kingdom. After the pej cution and death of St... ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Sure to Inspire and then Disappoint
After reading this, you may well be inspired to join the Episcopal Church, but if you did, you'd soon be disappointed. As others have said, this is a book that describes the church as it was. It really has little. . . no, nothing, to do with the Church today. Just the fact that there is a section in the book on preparation for communion says it all. Preparation for communion in the Episcopal Church today? No, this book really serves little point to serious inquirers other than satisfying historical curiosity, and that is a pity. The book describes a ghost, and even that ghost is quick fading. +

5-0 out of 5 stars The Church As It Once Was
I used this wonderful little book for teaching fifty years ago when I was first ordained. It lays out the teachings of the Episcopal Church as it was before the Revisionists took power, and as we pray it will one day be again. It presents sound doctrine, and teaches good solid spiritual and sacramental living. For those of us who revere the Anglican faith as it was once practiced here and still is in most of the Anglican world, this book it a treasure.

3-0 out of 5 stars A lovely historical read but is not a good introduction to the ECUSA
I was baptised as an adult in the Episcopal Church--I based my views of the Episcopal Church on my local parish, which was in between priests (which lasts at least a year), and this book. I fell in love with the Episcopal Church--at least what I thought was the Episcopal Church. What this book describes is something of the past. While some localized parishes, and perhaps a few conservative dioceses, hold with this worldview.......it is certainly not the public image being portrayed by the current leadership, nor the last General Convention. I went through a LOT of heartbreak as I came to realize that the leadership and public image was becoming less about Christ and more about embracing all viewpoints rather than embracing all people. I in no way mean to tear down the Episcopal Church, but I would point inquirers to another book if they are coming to the Episcopal Church as an adult wanting to know what it is "all about."

It is a great book for learning the history of the Episcopal Church, however, and I still treasure this book. It would be great for those conservative parishes/dioceses to use in confirmation classes and adult education. I would not use it for an inquirers class.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Simple Overview and Introduction to the Episcopal Church (as it should be)
An Introduction to the Episcopal Church is a great resource for Episcopalians, young and old.It is especially helpful to those not so familiar with the church's history, traditions, liturgy, sacraments and beliefs.

There is no slant or agenda here except to educate readers about the church. It begins with a brief history that provides the highlights from the birth of the Church of England to the creation and growth of the Episcopal Church in the USA.Each chapter offers a solid, simple explanation of its topic.I found the chapters on the Lore and Prayer Book especially helpful.

This book explains why Episcopals do the things we do in church services.I think the chapter on the church's requirements of members is also enlightening for those who may not see themselves as having such duties and commitments to their church.

This book does not address any of the current tension between conservatives and liberals in the Episcopal Church, and I think its picture is of what the Episcopal Church should be based on its stated beliefs and original intentions and practices.

Check out the paperback copies from Amazon Marketplace.

4-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat dated, but useful nonetheless...
In many ways, this book is of a different age. While it will provide insight into the Episcopal Church, it is probably not the best introduction to the current state of affairs of the Episcopal Church in the United States.Originally published in 1935, it has various writing conventions that have been dropped (always calling the apostle Paul `St. Paul', for example) by many academic writers. This is very much a book of the 1928 Book of Common Prayer mindset; in that regard, many can find use for this book as a counter to more modern trends in the church.

The book is fairly brief, consisting of ten chapters on the following topics: History, Government, Bible, Prayer Book, Lore, Prayer Life, Moral Law, Doctrine, Sacraments, and Requirements. This was intended in many ways as a study guide for Confirmation candidates; to this end, there are several sections at the conclusion dealing with Preparation for Confirmation, a guide to Self-Evaluation, some Prayers, and a short Bibliography of Christian Classics Bernardin identifies as significant in general Christian history, such as writings by Augustine.

The book is a very practical guide in many ways - it explains various practices and liturgical pieces well.It deals with basic theological propositions such as the meaning and development of creeds, particular regular worship pieces, and general moral and governance issues in the church. It does not get bogged down too much in great detail, but doesn't skimp on the information either - rather, Bernardin set out essentially to explain the practice and the belief of the typical church for newcomers and interested but uneducated regular attenders alike.

Bernardin touches briefly on the issues of history, going back to the early church in New Testament times, following through to the Reformation, up to the present time. The development of Prayer Books over time is also briefly covered, but primarily as a means to illustrate why the current Book of Common Prayer has the shape it does.

While this would not be my first choice for an introduction to the church for the average Episcopalian or non-Episcopalian interested in learning more, it is certainly a useful guide, tending toward the more conservative side; for those for whom this orientation is important, this book will be especially welcome. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Sunday Readings up to Date
Books of Sunday Scripture Readigns are not new.Nor is the Revised Common Lectionary. But updates are always being made. This edition of the Revised Common Lectionary comes in a handy size (it could fit into a pew rack). The best thing about this volume is its inclusion of an alternate set of Old Testament Readings for the Season after Pentecost.Year A includes the stories of the Patriarchs.Year B tells us about the kings of Israel all the way to the Babylonian Captivity. And Year C introduces us to the prophets, chronologically.I see in these Readings an honest attempt to follow the Sunday theme from the Holy Gospel. My only problem with the Episcopal (and ELCA) Readings is in its exclusion of any reference to Ephesians 5: 21-33 in Series B when this Epistle is being read from Sunday to Sunday. This Reading is also excluded from the Marriage Rite in the Pastoral Care resources.I understand the problems that have emerged from the words "wives, submit to your husbands;" but there is a way to preach this Reading without setting husbands up to become abusers. In reality, I often find myself giving myself up for my wife, since I love her (as St Paul also taught).

3-0 out of 5 stars Jim Crow Among the Episcopalians
This is the story of two denominations in one; separate but a little more equal than our society in general was during most of the same time period. The African-American church can be said to have had its beginning inPhiladelphia in 1787 when black parishioners were expelled from St.George's Methodist Church. The two leaders of the group then went inopposing directions: Richard Allen became the founder of the AfricanMethodist Episcopal Church, and Absalom Jones went to the ProtestantEpiscopal Church and started a parish for blacks, St. Thomas'.St. Thomas'Church then spent the next 82 years unrepresented in the councils of theDiocese of Pennsylvania. This fact effectively sums up the condition ofthe black church prior to the Civil War.The Episcopal Church takes pridein saying that it was the only major denomination which did not split overthe slavery question, but the other denominations that did, the Methodist,Presbyterian, and Baptist, were no more racist in their conduct when thosedivisions turned out to be permanent following the war.The EpiscopalChurch considered two options in seeking to answer the question of what todo about the freedmen: should they be ministered to by the Church, orrecolonized back to Africa? When the latter course was deemed impracticaland the former adopted, two further options presented themselves:shouldblacks be integrated into existing church structures or provided with theirown segregated facilities?Of course segregation prevailed, and until the1960's blacks occupied the anomalous position of being a mission fieldright here at home. The first black bishop to oversee his own people waselected in 1918; the first to have jurisdiction over white churches as wellcame in 1962.Lewis writes with a generally equitable balance betweenpraise for the work of the Episcopal Church (he is an African-AmericanEpiscopal rector) and recognition of guilt for past abuses. It isregrettable that he has virtually nothing to say about the ReformedEpiscopal Church's rescue of the former slaves of South Carolina who wereejected from white Episcopal parishes and refused organization orordination for work among themselves by the parentChurch.Nonetheless, for those interested in the African-American religious odyssey, this is aworthwhile book. ...
