Excerpt: Eastern Nazarene College -Pentecostal Collegiate Institute at the Rhode Island campus, c. 1905On September 25, 1900, several come-outer Methodist clergy and laymen affiliated with the 19th century Holiness movement opened a co-educational collegiate institute at the Garden View House in Saratoga Springs, New York. In a time when pentecostal did not hold the same meaning as it does today, but rather served as a synonym for holiness, it was named the Pentecostal Collegiate Institute (PCI) and established for the purpose of providing liberal education and ministry training in a preparatory academy, four-year college, and theological seminary. PCI operated under the auspices of the Association of Pentecostal Churches of America (APCA), a loose association of Wesleyan-holiness churches from eastern Canada down to the Middle Atlantic, and its own board of education, with Lyman C. Pettit as its first president. PCI was also accredited by the New York State Education Department's Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York and was given state funding because a public school did not exist there at the time. William Howard Hoople was born in Herkimer, New York, on 6 August 1868, the oldest child and only son of Canadian immigrants William Gordon Hoople (born 3 April 1841 in Dickinson's Landing, Eastern District, Upper Canada; died 28 December 1908 of "acute indigestion" in New York), an Episcopalian clerk employed by his uncle, and Agnes T. Excerpt: The Church of the Nazarene is an evangelical Christian denomination that emerged primarily from within the Wesleyan-Methodist tradition of the 19th century Holiness movement in North America. Its members colloquially referred to as Nazarenes, it is the largest Wesleyan-holiness denomination in the United States. At the end of September 2009, the Church of the Nazarene had 1,945,542 members in 24,285 churches in 156 different "world areas". Most members of the Church of the Nazarene are found in the United States (658,402), Haiti (116,000), Bangladesh (65,000), and India (59,039). The denomination has the highest percentage presence in the nations of Cape Verde, Samoa, Barbados, Haiti and Swaziland. The mission is "to respond to the Great Commission of Christ to go and make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19)". In December 2006, this was expressed more succinctly as "to make Christlike disciples in the nations". This frames the global mission of the denomination. In 2009 the General Assembly indicated in its revision of Article XI of the Manual the means for accomplishing its mission: "making disciples through evangelism, education, showing compassion, working for justice, and bearing witness to the kingdom of God." Since 2001, the three core values of the Church have been identified as Christian, missional, and holiness. The Church of the Nazarene supports 58 undergraduate and graduate educational institutions in 40 countries on six continents around the world.. Excerpt:Christ's Sanctified Holy Church is a holiness denomination located primarily in the Southeastern United States. The group was organized on February 14, 1892, when members of the Methodist Episcopal Church on Chincoteague Island, Virginia , became convinced that they could not be saved without experiencing the "second blessing," i.e. entire sanctification . The group was under the leadership of Joseph B. Lynch . Christ's Sanctified Holy Church grew significantly during the first part of the 20th century as members traveled across the country preaching the doctrines of holiness and sanctification. The church teaches that salvation is a two-step process consisting of conversion (repentance and forgiveness of sins) and sanctification (the indwelling of the Holy Spirit) which cleanses the believer from all sin. Believers are then expected to live clean, holy lives. Other doctrines include the inspiration of the Scriptures, the deity of Christ, and the existence of a literal heaven and hell.
