Editorial Review

Product Description
Drawing on the best English and German language scholarship to date, this book offers a novel interpretation of Barth's mature Christology. Examining the entirety of the Dogmatics, it provides a nuanced analysis of Barth's treatment of the Chalcedonian Definition, the enhypostasis/anhypostasis pairing, and various Protestant scholastic Christological distinctions; an examination of the coinherence of Barth's doctrines of God and Christ, which contributes to current debates about Barth's doctrine of election; and a lengthy account of the Christology of Church Dogmatics IV that foregrounds Barth's understanding of Christ's human involvement in the drama of reconciliation.Throughout the text, the author shows convincingly that Barth's emphasis on Christ's divinity goes hand-in-hand with a dogmatically rich and often startling account of Christ's humanity. The text does not confine itself to the Church Dogmatics. It also situates Barth in the context of the wider Christian tradition and modern Western philosophy of religion. Thus Barth is set in conversation with a wide range of thinkers, including Anselm of Canterbury, Martin Luther, John Calvin, Friedrich Schleiermacher, G. W. F.Hegel, Gottfried Thomasius, and Harry Frankfurt. In addition, the text makes a number of constructive gestures, showing a particular interest in feminist and liberationist trajectories of thought. The final chapter considers the standing of Barth's Christology today and its pertinence for theological ethics and political theology. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
After converting to the Catholic Church, Brian Bookheimer was regularly asked by his Protestant family and friends, "Why would you want to become Catholic?" Unfortunately, it is very difficult to adequately answer this question in just a few sentences. And although his children are young, they too would someday be faced with the same questions, and he would need to assist with educated answers. By regularly attending Mass with his wife, Brian slowly gained a deeper appreciation of the Catholic Liturgy, which led to a greater appreciation of the Catholic Church. Because of the author's love for the Mass, Scripture, and the history of the early Church, he has written a book that follows the format of the Liturgy, and analyzes it from a biblical, historical and doctrinal perspective, briefly addressing those beliefs that separate Christians. It is his hope that the information contained in this book will assist the reader in deepening their relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ and gain a greater appreciation for the Church that He founded. ... Product Description
1946. In the spring of 1820, young Joseph Smith Jr. retired to the woods near his home and offered a simple prayer to our Father in Heaven. A series of remarkable spiritual experiences prepared him for his prophetic calling. He saw God the Father and Jesus Christ in vision and was chosen by God to restore the Church of Jesus Christ to the earth. Through revelation, he translated and published the Book of Mormon, organized The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and received revelations to guide the Church. By inspiration, he called Apostles and other Church leaders, defined doctrines, and taught the principles and ordinances that would lead to exaltation. This volume covers the first period of the history and is based on the narratives of Joseph Smith. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Theology and ideas for missional churches
Steve Chalke, with Anthony Watkis, Intelligent Church: A Journey towards Christ-Centred Community (Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 2006)

Chalke is founding director of Oasis and leads the church.co.uk network. He passionately communicates about immersing church and communication of the gospel in an understanding of God's love and grace, and understanding people as made in the image of God (not just or primarily as sinners). He points to marks of an intelligent church such as inclusiveness, honesty, messiness and diversity, and at the end of each chapter includes some practical suggestions and questions to prompt action. His mission experience and reading of the radical and political message of Jesus in the gospels informs the book throughout. He stresses the importance of letting our concept of God as Trinity and our Christology shape the way we do mission and church: `An intelligent church is a church where Christology drives its missiology, which in turn shapes its ecclesiology. All that we believe about God as revealed in Christ (his nature and style) must shape all that we believe about our mission (its nature and style), and the way that we do church should simply be the best way to encapsulate, express and achieve that goal. We must confront the tendency for the process to end up reversed. The shape of the way we do church - our traditions, our meetings, our buildings, our liturgies, our governance, our dress and countless more of our cultural preferences - can no longer be allowed to determine the shape and style of our mission and so limit what our communities and our society as a whole can see or know of Christ.' (p.173)
