Excerpt:'Christadelphians' (from the Greek for Brothers of Christ / Christ's Brethren: Christou Adelphoi; cf. Greek of Colossians 1:2"brethren in Christ") are a Christian group that developed in the United Kingdom and North America in the 19th century. The name was coined by John Thomas, who was the group's founder. Although no official membership figures are published the Columbia Encyclopedia gives an estimated figure of 50,000 Christadelphians in 120 countries established in many countries throughout the world, along with isolated members. Census statistics are available for some countries. Estimates for the main centres of Christadelphian population are as follows: United Kingdom (18,000), Australia (9,987), Malawi (7,000), Mozambique (5,300), United States (6,500), Canada (3,375), New Zealand (1,782), Kenya (1,700), India (1,300), Tanzania (1,000), and Philippines (1,000). This puts the figure at around 60,000. The Christadelphian religious group can be traced back to Dr John Thomas, who moved to America from England in the mid-19th century. Following a near shipwreck he vowed to find out the truth about life and God through personal Biblical study. Initially he sought to avoid the kind of sectarianism he had seen in England. In this he found sympathy with the rapidly emerging Restoration Movement in America at the time. This movement sought for a reform based upon the Bible alone as a sufficient guide and rejected all creeds. However this liberality eventually led to dissent as John Thomas developed in his personal beliefs and started to question mainstream orthodox Christian beliefs. Whilst they accepted his ability to have his own beliefs, when he started preaching that they were essential to salvation, it led to a fierce series of debates wit... Excerpt: Dr. John Thomas (April 12, 1805 - March 5, 1871) was the founder of the Christadelphian movement, a Restorationist religion with doctrines similar in part to some 16th century Antitrinitarian Rationalist Socinians and the 16th century Swiss-German pacifist Anabaptists. John Thomas M.D., born in Hoxton Square, Hackney, London, on April 12, 1805, was the son of a Dissenting minister, also named John Thomas. His family is reputed to be descended from French Huguenot refugees. His family moved frequently, as his father took up various pastorships including a congregation in London, a brief but eventful stay in northern Scotland, back to London, and then up to Chorley, Lancashire. John Thomas was a very disciplined student having taught himself Hebrew as a teenager. At the age of 16, in Chorley, he began studying medicine. His family moved back to London, but John Thomas stayed in Chorley. After two years, he returned to London to continue his studies at the Guy's and St. Thomas's hospitals for a further three years. He trained as a surgeon and had a keen interest in chemistry and biology, publishing several learned medical articles for The Lancet, one of which argued in favour of the importance of the use of corpses for the study of medicine (it was illegal in England to dissect them at this time). Like many people of that era, in 1832 his father made the decision to seek fresh opportunities and emigrate to America. So it was that Dr John Thomas, having few ties, decided to go with his family, agreeing to go on ahead and prepare for the family. He took the opportunity to further his career and accepted an appointment as ship's surgeon on the Marquis of Wellesley which was bound from St Katharine Docks, London to New York. The sh... Chapters: Heritage Colleges (Australia), Meal-A-Day Fund, Heritage College Sydney, Heritage College Cooranbong, Christadelphian Isolation League, Heritage College, Perth, Heritage College Adelaide. Excerpt: The Christadelphian Meal-a-Day Fund (CMaD) is a UK registered charity set up and run by the Christadelphians. It was founded in 1976 in Tamworth, UK after the founders heard Henry Kissinger give a speech in which he said everyone on earth should have at least one meal a day. The fund seeks to facilitate self-sufficiency and self-worth through sustainable, 'down to earth' local projects, which aim to overcome the effects of hunger, disease, disability, destitution and homelessness as well as promoting agriculture, clean water, health care and education. The focus is mainly on African and other less economically developed nations. Money is raised by a number of methods, including donations from individuals, group donations from church collections, donations in wills, gift aid and by buying various items for sale such as cards, tea towels and t-shirts. In recent years, between £350,000 and £500,000 has been raised per annum by the fund, around half of which is used on long term projects that rely largely, or solely, on CMaD funding. Some of these are described below. Aside from the major, long term projects, the fund has made significant one off donations to other causes including Tree Aid which plants trees in Burkina Faso, Fundación Santa Cruz which helps Colombian street children, the Ayries Society which is based in Tamil Nadu, Southern India and helps people with HIV/AIDS and TB and Trek Aid which helps Tibetan refugees. The CMaD Fund currently has two sister charities: ... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=12960109 ... Read more
