Excerpt: The term "Celtic Rite" is applied to the various liturgical rites used in Celtic Christianity in Great Britain, Ireland, perhaps in Brittany, sporadically in Northern Iberia and also in the monasteries founded by the Irish missions of St. Columbanus in France, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy during the early middle ages. The term does not imply homogeneity; the evidence, scanty and fragmentary as it is, is in favour of considerable diversity. Cartmel on Morecambe Bay in north-west England, the location of an early monastic communityBefore the 8th century CE there were several Christian rites in Western Europe. Such diversity of practice was often considered unimportant so long as Rome's primacy was accepted. Gradually the diversity tended to lessen so that by the time of the final fusion in the Carolingian period the Roman Rite, its Ambrosian variant, the Romanized Celtic Rite and the Hispano-Gallican Mozarabic Rite were practically all that were left. We find British bishops at the Council of Arles in 314 and the Council of Rimini in 359. Communication with Gaul may be inferred from dedications to St. Martin at Withern and at Canterbury, from the mission of Victridius of Rouen in 396 and those of Germanus of Auxerre...http://booksllc.net/?id=3074727 ... Product Description
Christianity in Cornwall began in the first centuries AD. Western Christianity was introduced into Cornwall along with the rest of Great Britain. Over time it became the official religion, superseding previous Celtic and Roman practice. Early Christianity in Cornwall was spread largely by the saints, including Piran, the patron of the county. Cornwall, like other parts of Britain, is sometimes associated with the distinct collection of practices known as Celtic Christianitybut was always in communion with the wider Catholic Church. The Cornish saints are commemorated in legends, churches and placenames. In contrast to Wales, which produced Welsh Bibles, the churches of Cornwall never produced a translation of the Bible in the Cornish language, which may have contributed to that language's demise. During the English Reformation, churches in Cornwall officially became affiliated with the Church of England. In 1549, the Prayer Book Rebellion caused the deaths of thousands of people from Devon and Cornwall. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money, sorry!
I wanted to like this book. However, Rabey's take on things Irish is definitely "Celtic Lite," and intended only for those who like to skim the surface, read the comic book, get the T-shirt and go home.As a leader of pilgrimage to Ireland and other destinations ..., I had hoped to use the Rabeys' books as references for my pilgrims -- but the once-over-lightly approach is suited only to the American tourist who wants to keep moving yet feel he/she's seem something worthwhile. ...

3-0 out of 5 stars Ambivalent
I think the 1 to 5 stars spread in the 2 reviews posted at this time says a lot.The book is very good AND very poor.Very good in that it has a wealth of information and one can pick up and start reading almost anywhere and glean something.Very poor in the paper and picture quality and in the organization. It is as if the author has too much to say and so it just tumbles out. However, I did think that the scope of the book was good and the the "sidebars" were well done. The index helps; the table of contents does not.It is a fairly good book as a 2nd or 3rd book on Celtic spirituality.Start with Mitton's "Soul of Celtic Spirituality" or Bradley's "The Celtic Way."

1-0 out of 5 stars DISAPPOINTING
I was disappointed in this book. While it is intended to be an overviewof the Celtic tradition, both before and after Christianity, I found it tobe annoyingly superficial. His suggestions for applying certain traits ofthe Celts to our lives reminded me of some really poor"self-help" books I've come across.I realize that this bookjust wasn't for me; but for anyone desiring an excellent introduction tothe Celtic tradition and Celtic Christianity, I would highly recommend"Celtic Christianity" by Timothy Joyce.Another very good recentfind was "Listening for the Heartbeat of God" by Newell.

5-0 out of 5 stars The title says it all...
In the House of Memory was a fantastic read.Well-researched and well-written, it's the kind of book that can't be fully digested in one reading.Steve Rabey does a wonderful job of bringing the reader into thetime of the Celts and making him or her feel at home.I found the contentto be truly inspiring.Within the pages of this book, one who is weary ofmodern spirituality and the shallowness of contemporary culture will findan oasis of depth and meaning. The stories of Celtic saints will challengeanyone, and Rabey's practical insights on ways to integrate theirspirituality into a modern lifestyle gives the work great practical value. This is one I'll read again and again. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Celtic Collection...
Robert Van De Weyer has written and edited extensively in the area of Celtic literature and lore. In fact, he has two book entitled Celtic Parables, one longer one (approximately 250 pages) with full stories, arranged by categories, with an introduction and a good bibliography. The shorter one (64 pages) is more of a gift book, with brief excerpts from parables, done with an interesting graphic layout. Please check out my review on the other book, too.

The longer Celtic Parables, which bears the subtitle Stories, Poems and Prayers, is laid out in the following topics as chapter groupings:

- Truth and Falsehood
- Love and Hate
- Virtue and Sin
- Faith and Doubt
- Riches and Poverty
- Pleasure and Pain
- Peace and Conflict
- Wisdom and Folly
- Youth and Age
- Life and Death

One might get the sense that there is a dualist framework to the Celtic worldview, but in that this dualism is fairly superficial. There is a deeper connection between these apparent poles than we often understand. One of the best ways to illustrate the connections is through storytelling, particularly the kind of short, metaphorical storytelling that parables embody.

Parables and the use of storytelling for education and worship pre-date the introduction of Christianity to Ireland and other Celtic lands, but it does serve to explain the easy acceptance of much of the Christian message to Celtic peoples. Many of the stories now have a Christian flavour to them, but often these are modern revisions of older pagan stories, with the names changed to represent the change in religious orientation.

Very readable, very accessible, many of the parables in this collection take up one page or less of text. Many of them read in this translation like a prose poem. Most have a couplet or small synopsis at the end of the parable that helps make explicit the meaning contained in the story, rather like Jesus turning to the disciples after many parable-tellings and saying, 'Don't you get it?' and then proceeding to tell the disciples the points they missed.

Celtic spirituality is very popular at the moment, and for good reason, as the items in this collection ably demonstrate. There is a real humanity to the writing. There is care, compassion and warmth of emotion. There is concern and respect for the natural world (which would tie in both with the early Christian pastoral emphases and pagan naturalist practices). These are things that have seen a resurgence in the modern time. ... Read more

Product Description
It is an often overlooked fact that Celtic art is iconic for two very different world views: primeval Christianity and pagan/new age. Celtic art and spirituality stand on an overlap between these two cultures and act as connecting links between them. Both cultures can learn from their differences, ultimately supporting and nourishing the spiritual aspirations of each. Michael Green's Celtic Blessings 2011 Wall Calendar is a masterful marriage of these two worlds. Based on Celtic themes and early Irish Christian illuminated manuscripts, Green reenvisions these genres into a stunning modern look that is firmly rooted in the past.
At various times in his life, Green has been a wandering monk, artist and craftsman, television art director, architect, illustrator and author. His books include The I Ching Journals, The Illuminated Rumi, The Illuminated Prayer and The Unicornis Manuscripts (978-1-60237-119-4).

2-0 out of 5 stars Review by Paul Wallis author "Be Thou My Breastplate"
As Vicar of Aidan's ancient island home of Lindisfarne, David Adam wrote this book out of a life wrapped up in the geography and continutiy of the Celtic tradition. David's books draw out some of the thought, feeling and whole-life theology of the ancient Celtic Christians. I believe many believers today are hungry for a Christian spirituality that hallows rather than irrelevances the everyday stuff of life. More than his previous books, Power Lines seeks to bring that awareness more explicitly into thew everyday stuff of the modern world.

Though the compositions in this collection don't quite "connect" for me I value the awareness and value of a real life lived in relation with God that is the bedrock of this book's thesis.

Paul Wallis - author of "BE THOU MY BREASTPLATE - 40 days of giving your life to God the Celtic way!" (Continuum/Paulist) "This serene, superb...book is...a rich gift to the Church." Phyllis Tickle)

5-0 out of 5 stars A truly inspiring collection.
Based on the model of the ancient Celts, David Adam's Power Lines provides contemporary prayers that convert common features of the workday into opportunities for prayer. Power Lines incudes prayers for the various timesof the day, as well as for emotional responses to work. Of particularinterest is the chapter devoted to those who live and work in cities. AVoice in the Night: Father Almighty, Lord of all,/Hear your loved one whenI call.//Jesus all loving, Savior of all,/Hear your loved one when Icall.//Spirit all Powerful, guide of all,/Hear your loved one when Icall./Trinity all blessed, ruler of all,/Hear your loved one when I call. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Life Changing
This book is by far the best book on the subject of Celtic Christianity I have ever encountered. The author not only has a superb knowledge of the subject, but has found ways to bring the knowledge and practice of theCeltic Saints into today's life. I would recommend this book only if youare willing to have everything you thought you knew about Christianitychallenged and your life changed through a deeper relationship with God.This and Esther De Waal's "Celtic Way of Prayer" make a greatstarting point for the study of Celtic Christianity. I cannot recommendthem highly enough. As the Irish say "Beannacht Dé leat" -- God'sblessings be upon you.
