Product Description
American religious pacifism is usually explained in terms of its practitioners' ethical and philosophical commitments. Patricia Appelbaum argues that Protestant pacifism, which constituted the religious center of the large-scale peace movement in the United States after World War I, is best understood as a culture that developed dynamically in the broader context of American religious, historical, and social currents.

Exploring piety, practice, and material religion, Appelbaum describes a surprisingly complex culture of Protestant pacifism expressed through social networks, iconography, vernacular theology, individual spiritual practice, storytelling, identity rituals, and cooperative living. Between World War I and the Vietnam War, she contends, a paradigm shift took place in the Protestant pacifist movement. Pacifism moved from a mainstream position to a sectarian and marginal one, from an embrace of modernity to skepticism about it, and from a Christian center to a purely pacifist one, with an informal, flexible theology.

The book begins and ends with biographical profiles of two very different pacifists, Harold Gray and Marjorie Swann. Their stories distill the changing religious culture of American pacifism revealed in Kingdom to Commune. ... Read more

Product Description
This best-selling volume addresses fears every human faces - vulnerability, illness, aging, and dying. Yet at its core this book is more about living than dying. Arnold says living for a cause greater than ourselves enables us to face eternity with the strength that comes from faith. Drawing on stories of people he has known and counseled as pastor, relative, or friend, Arnold shows how suffering can be given meaning, and despair overcome. He offers the assurance that even today, in our culture of isolation and death, there is hope. As you read, you'll meet individuals who lived life to the fullest by serving others. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Short, memorable, and interesting.
Easily a book you could read in a day or less, "I TELL YOU A MYSTERY" offers real human stories and insights into life and death. It sounds like a downer of a book, but it actually filled me with much more hope than I thought it would.I will remember a few of these stories forever, no doubt, and I'm sure they will help me in my own journey, when I begin to lose those closest to me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Poignant Vignettes About How Ordinary People Face Death
Arnold's book begins:"Are you afraid of dying?Have you everworried about growing old, about becoming a burden to your children?Doyou wonder how you would survive the loss of your spouse, a parent, achild? Is someone you love facing illness or death?Whether consciouslyor subconciously, every person inevitably faces these questions at onepoint or another. It is in search of answers to them that I have writtenthis book."

Arnold searches for these answers in the stories ofordinary people he's known who have faced death. He tells each story wellin that he doesn't over dramatize the circumstances or struggle to justifyGod's ways.Instead, he lets each life speak for itself and allows thatdeath is a great mystery indeed.

After losing my father, I read severalbooks about pain, loss, grieving, and death.I enjoyed this work becauseit featured many perspectives, allowing that death is very much anindividual experience, shaped by upbringing and personality. It wasinstructive and comforting to read about how other Christians have facedtragedy and illness.I also like the way he included photographs of thepeople because it made me feel closer to them.

This is a quiet littlebook that you can read in a few sittings or savor bit by bit.It willleave you pondering life, death, and God's plan for creation.I appreciateArnold's perspective because his sadness is tempered by his knowledge thatthe universe is ruled by a loving and merciful God who has not left deathas the final word.

5-0 out of 5 stars When words are hard to find
Sometimes it is hard to know what words to say when a friend is suddenly facing terminal illness or the loss of a loved one. A gift of this book is one way of saying 'I care'. We will all face tough things in life andeventually the end of our life, the stories in this book are about ordinarypeople who faced these moments with faith and courage.

5-0 out of 5 stars My mother died of Cancer. This book helped me through
I Tell you a Mystery; Life, Death, Eternity" with a foreword by Madeleine L'Engle is the best book that I found on the market dealing with Death, Dying and Bereavement. My family experienced a lot of death and we were hurting. We did not know how to deal with it.It seems like death and bereavement is something no one wants to talk about it.And even when one looses a beloved one like a parent or brother and sister one is expected in our Society to act normal within a few days. This all changed when we got a copy of "I Tell you a Mystery."The stories contained in this book everyone and anyone young and old can have real empathy with.I highly recommend this book to all ages.Even little children just love to read the stories which this book contains. 5-0 out of 5 stars Do YOU have the faith to face death at any time?
This book made me face the question squarely.I was touched by the many examples of ordinary people facing death with faith in God, and a hope in the eternal. Those whose stories appear in this book had the same fears and worries that you and I do about death, but faith and joy was given to them ... Read more

Product Description
Everyone these days seems to be searching for community in one way or another - whether in the form of committed, nourishing relationships at home and at work, support networks, small groups, house churches - even cyberspace. But mention "community" and many people literally go blank. They claim that they're not ready for the commitment such a term implies, or lack sufficient energy, gifts, or time. It's just not 'where they're at.' Or is it? This new translation of a time-honored manifesto adds a fresh, engaging voice to the vital discussion of what real community is all about: love, joy, unity, and the great "adventure of faith" shared with others along the way. Neither Arnold nor Merton describe (or prescribe) community here, but for the individual seeker, they do provide a vision to guide and inspire the search, and for those who may have already answered the call to community, they offer the disarming challenge of greater commitment and a continually deepened faith. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A classic - Needs to be remarketed/reread today!
There are some amazing insights in this book that can only be learned or expressed by someone who has started and lived in community for a period of time. No theory here but real and practical advice that I really appreciated reading. I told my wife that there are two or three profound thoughts here that may be the most important I have read in the last ten or twenty years.

If you are into developing church community, new testament churches, body-life church, the priesthood of all believers, organic church or the emerging church, here are PRICELESS insights you should absorb into your lifeblood!

I wouldn't worry about those that question the current movement, as this was written quite a number of years ago when the movement was new and still the first-generation alive to the call of Christ. I cannot say that this is not still absolutely true, it may well be. Only I know some are put off by the communal aspects of the movement and they shouldn't be. Critical reading for believers whether one chooses to live in a communal way or not.

I hope it gets re-marketed (Are you listening Rob Bell, Frank Viola, Neil Cole, Brian McLaren,...I need you to get out the word!) and reread my millions of believers looking for what it means to be members one of another. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a quick read!
Though largely unknown today, Eberhard Arnold was widely sought as a public speaker in his native Germany before and after World War I . He influenced thousands during his lifetime. As far as Arnold's writing is concerned, Innerland was his life's work, he tried to include in it everyexperience he had ever had of God. Buried during the Nazi era, recoveredand translated into English, this is one of the most important spiritualbooks I have ever read. Not a quick read, be ready to invest some time andthought. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Powerfully Honest, Terribly Hopeful
Several good books on the subject of sexuality, relationship and marriage have come out recently. But this one tops them all. Arnold writes with such clarity, such depth, such relevance. This book gets at the root.Interspersed with stories and personal anecdotes, Arnold reflects onquestions we all think about, but rarely ask: Why are we sexual beings? Whydo we long for married love? Why do we hurt so badly when relationships aresevered? Why is sexual fulfillment and love so vitally connected?

Arnoldreflects on why we yearn for love, why it is that the "datinggame" is so dissatisfying, why it is we feel empty when sex is outsideof commitment, and why it is that God brings a man and a women together.Arnold pulls no punches. He is brutally honest and yet is able to writewith tenderness and compassion. If you long to know what it means to haveauthentic, truly free relationships where you experience the security oflasting love, then read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Advice for young adults
In a society immersed in 'sex'. It would be good for the next generation to stop and think deeply about what God has in mind. How do man - woman relationships look when they are under the influence of the Good Spirit? Such reflections early in life help lay a foundation upon which a healthymarriage can be built. This book will help! The foreword by Mother Teresawas one of her last published writings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rarely will you find such an excellent book on marriage.
Reading "A Plea For Purity", simply thrilled me.I did not expect that an Anabaptist author would be so courageous, and so explicit on this difficult topic.I highly recommend it for young, middle aged, andpeople who have been married for many years. It is also a very good bookfor single people. ...
