Product Description
Brethren in Christ Church Among the Ndebele takes off from a theoretical framework including views of Liberation Theology that Latin American writers espoused. It focuses, mostly, on the history of the Brethren in Christ Church in Zimbabwe and that of the Ndebele among whom it settled in 1898. Perhaps guided by Rudyard Kipling’s The White Man’s Burden, the early missionaries preached a mixing of Christianity and westernization, causing some Africans to question and resist its mission. However, Cecil J. Rhodes viewed BICC missionaries as useful partners in subduing the then-rebellious Ndebele in the Matopos area—allegedly writing Rev. Jesse Engle saying: “missionaries are cheaper and better.” No wonder, when the liberation war in Zimbabwe intensified, that the BICC became a target of attacks resulting in the forced withdrawal of all missionaries—and a hasty turning over of power to ill-prepared African leaders. ... Excerpt: The Church of the United Brethren in Christ is an evangelical Christian denomination based in Huntington, Indiana. It is a Protestant denomination of episcopal structure, Arminian theology, with roots in the Mennonite and German Reformed communities of 18th century Pennsylvania, as well as close ties to Methodism. It was founded by Martin Boehm and is the first American denomination that was not transplanted from Europe. In 1889, a controversy over membership in secret societies, such as the Freemasons, the proper way to modify the church's constitution, and other issues split the United Brethren into majority liberal and minority conservative blocs, the latter of which was led by Bishop Milton Wright (father of the Wright Brothers). The majority faction merged with the Evangelical Church in 1946 to form a new denomination known as the Evangelical United Brethren Church (EUB). This in turn merged in 1968 with The Methodist Church to form the United Methodist Church (UMC). The Wright-led faction (The Church of the United Brethren in Christ, Old Constitution) continues today as a denomination of about 550 congregations, with 47,300 members in fifteen countries. The US National Conference consists of about 200 churches and 25,000 members in the United States, plus mission districts in Haiti and India. The United States national office, known as Healthy Ministry Resources, is located in Huntington, Indiana, as is the denomination's only college, Huntington University and its Graduate School of Christian Ministries. Martin Boehm.Though not organized until 1800, the roots of the church reach back to 1767. In May of that year, a Great Meeting (part of the interdenominational revival movement known as the "Great Awakening") was held at a barn belongi... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=414081 ... Excerpt: Mahabodhi Temple -The site of the Bodhi tree at Bodhigaya is, according to the Buddhist commentarial scriptures, the same for all Buddhas. According to the Jatakas, it forms the navel of the earth, and no other place can support the weight of the Buddha's attainment When no Bodhi tree grows at the site, the ground around the Bodhi tree is devoid of all plants for a distance of one royal karsa, even a blade of grass, and is quite smooth, spread with sand like a silver plate. Around this area is covered only with grass, creepers and trees. None can travel in the air immediately above it, not even Sakka. When the world is destroyed at the end of a kalpa, the Bodhimanda is the last spot to disappear; when the world emerges into existence again, it is the first to appear. A lotus blooms there, bringing it into view, and if a Buddha is to be born during the kappa thus begun, the lotus puts forth flowers, according to the number of Buddhas. In the case of Gautama Buddha, his Bodhi tree sprang up on the day he was born. Traditional accounts say that, around 530 BC, Siddhartha Gautama, a young Indian Prince who saw the suffering of the world and wanted to end it, reached the sylvan banks of Falgu River, near the city of Gaya, India. There he sat in meditation under a peepul tree (Ficus religiosa or Sacred Fig), which later became known as the Bodhi tree. According to Buddhist scriptures, after three days and three nights, Siddharta attained enlightenment and the answers that he had sought. Mahabodhi Temple was built to mark that location. The Buddha then spent the succeeding seven weeks at se...http://booksllc.net/?id=226050 ... Read more

Excerpt:item Part of a series of articles on Ahmadiyya Islam Ahmadiyya (Urdu : ) is a religious movement founded towards the end of the 19th century and originating with the life and teachings of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (1835 1908). Ghulam Ahmad was an important religious figure who claimed to have fulfilled the prophecies about the world reformer of the end times , who was to herald the Eschaton as predicted in the traditions of various world religions and bring about the final triumph of Islam as per Islamic prophecy. He claimed that he was the Mujaddid (divine reformer) of the 14th Islamic century , the promised Messiah ("Second Coming of Christ ") and Mahdi awaited by Muslims. Ahmadi emphasis lay in the belief that Islam is the final law for humanity as revealed to Muhammad and the necessity of restoring to it its true essence and pristine form, which had been lost through the centuries. Thus, Ahmadis view themselves as leading the revival and peaceful pr... ... Read more

Chapters: Bishops of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ, Daniel Kumler Flickinger, Samuel Hiestand, Milton Wright, Alfred Taylor Howard, Christian Newcomer, Philip William Otterbein, Martin Boehm, Andrew Zeller, Jacob John Glossbrenner, Brian Magnus. Excerpt: BackgroundChristianityProtestantismMissions timelineChristianity in Africa Daniel Kumler Flickinger (25 May 1824 1911) was an American Bishop of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ, elected in 1885. He was the twenty-fifth Bishop of this Christian denomination, and the first elected to the office of Missionary Bishop. Bishop Flickinger was born 25 May 1824 near the village of Seven Mile, Butler County, Ohio, the sixth of the fourteen children born to Jacob and Hannah (Kumler) Flickinger. Jacob's ancestors were Swiss Mennonites. Hannah was the daughter of Henry Kumler Sr, a Bishop and influential leader in the early years of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ. Henry's son Henry Kumler Jr likewise was elected Bishop. Bishop Flickinger was therefore a grandson and a nephew of U.B. Bishops. His mother, Hannah, was the daughter, sister and mother of U.B. Bishops. Flickinger's parents were married in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, there establishing their first home. In 1818 they moved to Ohio. The next year Hannah's parents followed, there too establishing their home in Butler County. Jacob became a prosperous farmer and a zealous local preacher in the Miami Annual Conference of the U.B. Church. As was true of many of the pioneers of that day, he believed in hard work and rigid economy. He was also known for his deep-seated prejudice against higher education, also not unusual in that day. The itinerating pioneer preachers always found a welcome in the Flickinger home. There ...
