Product Description
From the crisis of the Babylonian exile to the rise of rabbinic Judaism--a span of over six hundred years--the Jewish people produced a wealth of literature that lies outside the Hebrew Bible. Today it goes under names such as apocrypha and pseudepigrapha, Josephus and Philo, apocalyptic literature and the Dead Sea Scrolls, Mishnah and targums. But line by line, scroll by scroll, it represents the history and theology, the hopes and prayers of a living and diverse Judaism. It is an engrossing subject in and of itself, but for students of the New Testament it offers an invaluable context for understanding the words and actions of Jesus as well as the conversion and thinking of Paul. Exploring Jewish Literature of the Second Temple Period is an introduction to this literature and places it within its historical context. Riding the explosive growth of knowledge of this period, Larry R. Helyer guides students to the heart of the matter. What were the pressures and realities, the questions and dreams that nurtured and provoked these written expressions? And how does this literature throw light on the text of the New Testament and origins of Christianity? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Survey !!
Here is an absolutely excellent one volume survey of the second temple period Jewish literature: apocrypha, pseudepigrapha, Josephus, Philo, apocalyptic, dead sea scrolls, mishnah and targums. Helyer gives a historical and thematic intro with a fair amount of detail for a survey, into the Jewish literature between the "old testament" and on up to new testament times. He also shows the literary and thematic connections between the different literary collections and Christian origins.A superb book !!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent place to start
Larry Helyer does an excellent job of introducing most of the relevent literature of the Second Temple period and its general influence on the writers of the New Testament and the Early Church. Excellent review or introduction depending on your background. I think this should be mandatory reading for every pastor and bible student. Well written with many chapter breaks to keep the organization of this large volume. This is the context of the New Testament that most Christians are not even aware exists. I have already recommended this texts to many people. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great price, great bible!
This was such an amazing price! Only a fraction of the store price! The quality was great and shipping was pretty fast! Thanks!

3-0 out of 5 stars For whom is this bible?
I got this because the GNT is an easy to read translation which I used a lot growing up, but no longer have a copy. Also, I know many people who use the Zondervan Student Bible, and so wanted to have those notes at home.

I am not Roman Catholic, but this bible seems to be a very wierd duck, so to speak. It looks like they only went halfway in modifying it for Roman Catholic readers.

Pros --It does have the deuterocanonical works and includes notes on them as well.Having the daily lectionary included is excellent, however I would have liked it better if besides the dates for six years, they had also included the year ABC stuff which, admittedly, can be confussing, since some of us may want to use this longer.

Cons --What are they thinking when in a ROMAN CATHOLIC bible they describe the Bible as a consisting of 66 different parts? Also their description of the way of becoming a Christian is very incomplete from a Catholic perspective in that it doesn't mention the sacraments of the Church.

As far as I'm concerned, the Oxford "Catholic Study Bible" and the Doubleday "New Jerusalem Bible" are MUCH better study bibles.Admittedly, neither translation is as easy to read, but both are excellent choices for study.

5-0 out of 5 stars GNT Student Bible
This is my favorite Bible. The GNT translation is so easy to read, and the commentary is great. It seems that the commentaries always address the issues that I have questions about as I read the Bible text.I have the goal of reading the whole Bible, and with the GNT Student Bible, I think I can do it a lot more easily.I have decided to buy a copy of this Bible for everyone in my family (wife and kids).

I would like to address Joe Martin's two issues in his review.I do not agree with issue #1.Since this Bible is intended for students, it needs to be one that is easy to read.Unlike the NLT or CEV, the GNT is the only easy reading Bible that has the Imprimatur (approval by Catholic church) for both the old testament and new testament.Even the commentary has a separate Imprimatur. The RSV is not easy to read.It is a very literal translation, and appeals more to conservative Catholic scholars. So I feel that the GNT is the perfect translation for the Catholic version of the Student Bible.

However, I do agree with issue #2.I think it is unfortunate that the Catholic version (GNT) of the Student Bible is not in the two color format like the protestant version (NIV) of the Student Bible.

***** UPDATE - April 10, 2005 ******

I take back some of what I said in the above review

I have been reading through this Bible more and have found some things in the notes that bother me. Even though this book was intended for Catholics, it is very obvious that the notes were written by Protestants. I am surprised that the notes were not updated to be more sensitive to Catholic readers in this publication. For example, I would see quotes like "As Martin Luther says, ..." or "Calvin said ...". Not many Catholics are interested in hearing quotes from these people. There is even a footnote that says many scholars believe that James is the brother of Jesus. I can tell you that those are not Catholic scholars. I still feel that the GNT is an excellent translation for Catholic youth. It has the Imprimatur, the deuterocanonical books, and it extremely easy to ready. Instead of this book, I would now recommend getting the GNT without notes, such as the GNT Holy Bible, Good News Translation, Catholic Edition (ISBN: 0310922526). For good notes, get them from a youth bible that was written by Catholics, such as the Catholic Youth Bible from St. Mary's Press (comes in NAB or NRSV translations).

Product Description
Have you been looking for a Christian studies program that is comprehensive, dignified, and integrated with the other subjects you prioritize in your classical education? Finally, Memoria Press is releasing the Christian Studies program our customers have been requesting. This three-year series thoughtfully guides your child through The Golden Children s Bible, teaching him the fundamentals of Bible stories, history, and geography, with solid detail at a manageable pace. Students do not merely skim the surface. They embark on a three-year Bible reading course that builds faith by teaching Salvation History as real history. The Golden Children s Bible was chosen because of its slightly simplified, but poetically appealing, King James text, along with its beautiful, accurate, and age-appropriate illustrations. This is important because we believe students should learn to revere the Bible as a sacred book, distinct from modern adventure stories with cartoon heroes.
Each Student Book offers 30 lessons, and each lesson is comprised of a scripture memory passage, important facts to know (including people, places, dates, and events), vocabulary, and comprehension questions that draw out the golden nuggets of meaning in each story. Maps, timelines, activities, and discussion questions offer the critical integration that is central to classical education.
Students work through one third of The Golden Children s Bible each year. The Teacher s Manual offers the insight and background for each lesson that you ve come to expect from Memoria Press, along with additional discussion, composition, or research prompts and helpful notes for the teacher. Using these guides, your student will be well prepared for the good work of advanced Christian Studies. What else could you want?
The Christian Studies program is in chronological order with the Bible. It is not ordered by student age, and each book is appropriate for students in 3rd through 7th Grade. (Many students start Book I in 3rd Grade and finish Book III in 5th Grade.)

Product Description
Joshua Jacobson's masterpiece -- the comprehensive 1000-page guide to cantillation -- is now available in this condensed, 300-page, user-friendly paperback edition. It is an ideal instructional guide for adult and young-adult students of Torah, for b'nai mitzvah students; and for cantors, rabbis, and Jewish educators of all denominations.

Like the original edition, it includes an explanation of the tradition and a description of the practice of chanting, with all its regional variations and grammatical rules. There is detailed instruction, with musical notation, on chanting of Torah, and shorter instructions for chanting the haftarah, the megillot, and readings for the High Holy Days. Over 85 links to the audio CD throughout make it easy for readers to follow examples in sound as well as in print and is invaluable for those who cannot read music. Charts, helpful hints, pronunciation guide, glossary, and indexes to the book and the CD complete the book.

Joshua Jacobson, professor of music and conductor of the acclaimed Boston-based Zamir Chorale, has been Torah chanting since he was 10 years old. That life-long experience, combined with the an unquenchable desire to reconnect the art of cantillation with the most convincing and accurate treatment of the ancient text possible, led him to create this indispensable teaching tool. Using Jacobson's highly acclaimed approach, the ancient words come alive in a new, deeply emotional and most accurate way. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Authorised Version for today's youth
The King James Version of the Bible is one version by which many if not most Christians in the English world swear by; if it is not considered the one-and-only version, then it is certainly in the top tier, both for traditional and spiritual reasons on the part of readers.Other versions have populated the biblical landscape, but none has come to close as yet to having the enduring quality and staying power of the King James Version, first published in 1611.

In addition to this traditional text, this particular student bible includes daily devotions (365 of them) that step through the bible in a linear fashion (January 1 is at Genesis 1, and so forth). It includes 1000 Life Track notes, which develop different topics in pull-quote boxes scattered throughout the text - these link together topically in a fashion by drawing page-numbers together in different parts of the biblical text. Finally, there are 100 Fast Track Readings, designed to give the beginner to the bible a quick overview in 100 days of the majority of the biblical message, deriving from different parts of the texts of different literary forms (gospels, prophets, history, etc.).

There is a minor quibble with the thin pages - the text is printed in an ink and colour strong enough to bleed through the pages. The fonts are clear enough, however, to overcome the minor reading difficulty this can cause.

Each book is introduced with an 'at a glance' section, quick overview in bullet points and major themes. There are also 'Amazing Words' pulled from each book at the start, a fast summary list of the most famous and most-quoted pieces. The study helps in the back include a topic index, reading plans for completing the bible in one year as well as the fast-track 100 plan.

This book is designed for a younger person - the themes highlighted will be of more interest to teen-aged and early-20s groups. There aren't a lot of textual notes with regard to language, history, etc., so in that since, this is more of a devotional bible than a study bible.

A great gift for younger people, and a great text generally. ... Read more
