Product Description
Ásatrú in the United States is a form of Germanic Neopaganism, in particular inspired by the Norse paganism as described in the Eddas and as practiced prior to the Christianization of Scandinavia. There are three national organizations of Nordic Paganism in the United States, Ásatrú Alliance, Ásatrú Folk Assembly and The Troth, besides numerous smaller or regional associations. Historically, the main dispute between these has generally centered on the interpretation of "Nordic heritage" as either something cultural, or as something genetic or racial ("metagenetic"). In the internal discourse within American Asatru, this cultural/racial divide has long been known as "universalist" vs. "folkish" Asatru. The Troth used to take the "universalist" position, claiming Asatru as a synonym for "Northern European Heathenry" taken to comprise "many variations, names, and practices, including Theodism, Irminism, Odinism, and Anglo-Saxon Heathenry". In the UK, Germanic Neopaganism is more commonly known as Odinism or as Heathenry. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Seminal work
This is a seminal work - one of the first books promoting Odinsim in North America.
It was the product of James Templton of the Asatru Free Church in Milwaukee Wisconsin. Very few of these pin bound books were published. They are single sheets
held together with several fold back pins. Full of old art work gleaned from history books. A must have for any Odinist/Asatru archive. ... Read more

Product Description
Sojourn: The Epic is the story, told in poetic form, of Laren Timothson, foretold at birth to be the ChosenOne of Thor, the red-bearded God of Storm and Thunder. It is the tale of his childhood, his death and rebirthas Sojourn, Gothi of Thor, and the machinations of Othin in revenge for Sojourn’s defiance of his will.

It is more though, than either of these things. Sojourn: The Epic is an appreciation of the Asatru faith, the telling of a tale inspired by the heroic lore of Northern Paganism, and a celebration of legend. Sojourn is what its name implies; a wandering journey into the birth of the archetypal hero. ... Read more

Product Description
The pre-Christian Germanic peoples -- the Norse, Germanic tribes, Anglo-Saxons, and Goths, to name a few -- worshipped mighty Gods and no less mighty Goddesses; revered spirits of the home and of the land; and honored great heroes of the past and their own worthy ancestors. Nearly forgotten for centuries, these ancient, timeless ways are making a resurgence in the modern world. Under several names -- Ásatrú, the Elder Troth, Odinism, Theodism, and Heathenry, among others -- the old religions of the Germanic peoples live again.

Noted author and scholar Kveldúlf Gundarsson presents a step-by-step course of study for those who have felt the call of the old gods and the old ways. With the readings and exercises in this course -- plus copies of the old mythological texts, the Poetic Edda and the Prose Edda -- any serious reader can deepen his or her understanding and connection with the old Gods and the old, ever-new ways. ... Northern Lore is a Field Guide to the Northern Mind-Body-Spirit, and will help you re-discover the Folk-Lore & Traditions of North Western Europe, and acquaint you with modern practices inspired by that lore.

In today's exciting cosmopolitan society, we tend to discard the old in favor of the new; and while discovering new traditions is a wonderful experience, it's important to also reflect on the traditions that have shaped our culture, and see where they’ve taken us.

In Northern Lore you will:

* Practice “Runic Yoga” for Health and Well Being
* Learn Ancient Herblore for Holistic Healing
* Meet your Animal Spirit Guide, or Fylgia
* Discover Lost Meaning in the Days of the Week
* Explore Modern Holidays & connections to Ancestral Festivals
* Unlock the Mysteries of the Runes
* Sample Viking and Anglo-Saxon cuisine

Together we’ll take an incredible journey back in time, and forward, embracing a synthesis of ancestral riches, and modern sensibilities. My hope is that after reading this, you’ll go and dig deeper into your history – read the Eddas, harvest some herbs, practice runic yoga and cook a viking feast!

5-0 out of 5 stars Something here for everyone
Being a student of runic lore myself, and having been one for most of my life there is something here for anyone interested in runelore. Absolutely Northern Lore serves as a great positive introduction in regards to runic lore without being overly cryptic and/or mystical about the subject. The runic yoga stances are interesting and believe it or not great when starting or winding down your day.

Meade as Poetry, I agree with whole heartedly -- being a brewer myself when able. The recipes in the Northern Cuisine are worth trying, preferably with a goblet of meade.

5-0 out of 5 stars Northern Lore: A field Guide To The Northern Mind, Body & Spirit
Northern Lore"A Field Guide To The Northern Mind, Body & Spirit" by Eoghan Odinsson captures the subject in a clear and concise way and covers many interesting individual elements of Northern Lore. As it is an easy read it is also a very good book for those just getting into the subject. The runic yoga system which Eoghan has devised based around the Elder Futhark runes captures the spirit of Northern Lore, and is an excellent practice to incoporate this spirit into the mind and body . ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Year of Viking Rituals
I enjoyed this book a lot. It gave plenty of information about setting up and conducting rituals thoughout the year.I especially enjoyed the ritual for Freya and Thor.It is a well written book that is very readable.

4-0 out of 5 stars pleasant surprise
in buying the book i wasn't sure what to expect. I have a great collection of Blot books from various kindred's and wanted to just add to my collection. After i had the book and reading into it, I now use it regularly for ideas for my own Blots. One of my kinswoman has been using and loves the idea of having the recipes in the book. The different ideas for conversation have come in handy as well. I think it is a well rounded blot book. Including all you need for a great Blot. The simplicity of it for me is just what i needed ! Very easy to read and understand!! I am excited about getting the next book!! "Hanging from the Tree"Thank you !!

4-0 out of 5 stars Norse based rites for a year of practice
Not a traditional book of Asatru practice, but rather an interpretation with both modern and traditional aspects. This book is designed for the Norse pagan or Heathen who is looking for the groundwork for daily and monthly practice throughout the full year. The book is not only a list of rites and rituals, but incorporates meditations, rune readings, and ideas for food and drink to relate to each month's celebrations. A great book for those who want to take the next step beyond rote ritual practice, and take a deeper meaning to heart each month. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The View from Asgard

This is by far one of the most controversial and interesting books to come out of the pagan community. If you are looking for New Age rhetoric, look elsewhere. If you are looking for inspiring prose proclaiming "strength over weakness, pride over humility, and knowledge over faith," this book is for you.

Everything about the text is controversial.First, it claims that a secret society, dating back to 1421, has perpetuated the lore of the old gods all these centuries. This claim sends ordinary people--people who think that the history in the standard books is true--into convulsions.

I think the claim is intriguing.

Second, the writing style is powerful.Like the informational myths in the Poetic Edda, which use dialogue to convey "truths," Mirabello has constructed a dialogue to convey his facts. He is a craftsman with words, and the result is moving. He has, in effect created a Bhagavad Gita , or a Tao Te Ching, or a Gospel of Luke, for Odinists. One hundred years from now, when no one will be reading Llewellyn paperback books, I suspect this one will survive.

Third, there is really none of the standard reconstructionism that one finds in most modern Odinist books. You will not find Old Norse jargon and mead-brewing instructions here.(In reality, any Viking worth his salt would prefer wine over mead, and stole wine whenever he raided south.)Too many modern people think that Odinism is about playing Viking. Instead, Mirabello captures the warrior spirit that made the ancestors great. They were brave and generous, and they groveled before no one, men or gods.

Fourth, he presents an interesting rationale for polytheism

"Observe the universe around you. A universe governed by one supreme deity would possess the maddening simplicity that characterizes any dictatorship, but our cosmos clearly shows no evidence of one will at work. Our universe is characterized by diversity and disorder, and that indicates the universe is molded by many wills and innumerable forces."

Fifth, he details the terse and moving rituals of the Odin Brotherhood, from their three annual festivals, to their mysterious initiation rite, to the child naming ceremony, to marriages, and funerals.

`Behold the warrior is dead!As the flowers return in the spring, so shall he return!"

Sixth, his descriptions of the Odinist death and afterlife concepts are moving.

"In poetic terms, death itself is personified as beautiful females who exist in an endless variety of exquisite forms. These females are called the Valkyries."

Finally, in crystal-clear prose, Mirabello presents the philosophy of Odinism. Not in dry terms as a Spinoza would, but he writes in lightning, as Nietzsche did.It all culminate sin his powerful description of Ragnarok and universe that will follow the great purification.

Hail to the Gods that are dead! They are the future race of lords!

1-0 out of 5 stars Overpriced Baloney
The book tries to be sensationalist. It is an utter failure.
No follower of the old Germanic religion hides, ever.
Secrecy is in total opposition to Odinism.
The claim that there is a "secret society" of Odinists is a hoax and serves only to sell this despicable little pamphlet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant conveyance of a little known secret society
This work is conveyed in an interview format and presents us with a first-hand account of The Odin Brotherhood, a polytheistic cult, primarily of Europe, whose visions bring to mind Norse and Teutonic values and rites.

The author himself is a highly-respected historian, a PhD and college professor, and a man clearly enthusiastic about his study of Odinism.

Buy this one for a refreshing look into an ancient cult. See my non-fiction and fiction listmania lists for additional recommendations.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Mysterious Side of Odinism and Asatru
Odinism is a religion that creates no laws, only virtues. This is a wonderful work on an ancient and extraordinary movement.

Contrary to the profane, the Odin Brotherhood is real.Indeed, I am a member! As for the secrecy, that is the source of our power!Ever hear of "Skull and Bones"?

If you are a New Age type, one who thinks Odinism is dressing up like a Viking and getting drunk on homemade mead, look elsewhere. This book is for the true and serious friends of the ancient gods and goddesses.

This book--published in England by Mandrake of Oxford--is rather expensive, but it is worth it.Impoverished readers, check for used copies.Thousands circulate.

Some other good books on Odinism and Asatru are Asatru' - The Hidden Fortress, What is Asatru?, Living AsatruOur Troth: History and Lore (Volume 1)Our Troth: Living the Troth (Volume 2)The Younger Edda Also called Snorre's Edda, or The Prose EddaThe Ásatrú Edda: Sacred Lore of the NorthThe Poetic Edda

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
As a heathen, I was very disappointed in this small yet overpriced little book. There was very little new information, very little explanation of the information discussed, and nothing in the book was verifiable. It took me less than an hour to read, and felt let down at the end.
An Odinic secret society that has survived for several centuries is absurd.Secrets and initiations are for the neo-pagans, not for heathens.Secret cults are cowards, hiding their faces and feelings from the rest of society.Cowardice is not a virtue of Odinism.
This book was somewhat entertaining, which is why I gave it two stars instead of one.I would not recommend this book to anyone new to Odinism. In fact, I would not recommned this book to anyone. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars disapointment
it was very dissapointing to recieve this book and find out that there were no illustrations in it. this was not clear to me at all when i purchased the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent intro for kids!
When I was a kid, my dad read me the most fantastic stories of the gods of the norse.I have continued to learn what I can ever since, but until now had not found a good introduction for my own children. My 7 and 13 year old girls beg for more every night, and I wonder what I am to do when I finally finish. My 16 year old son, of course, won't let me read to him :( , but he can read it on his own.

It is, of course lacking in some of the more adult aspects of the myths, but I find it doesn't take anything away from them rather it keeps it just a little simpler to grasp.

All in all, it's a great starting point!

3-0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware !!!!!!
Buyer beware !This Alladin Publication is the same as the Dover Publication Nordic Gods and Heroes. However, it is lacking much of the original artwork, especially that which introduces each of the four parts.
The first 3 parts are Norse mythology and the 4th is the Teutonic Ring of the Nibelungs. This book was written for children and young adults and gives only a bare bones telling of the myths.Be prepared for some archaic language : "dost", "spake", "knowst", etc.

Why Amazon chooses to sell these two books as a pair is beyond me as they are essentially identical.I recommend the Dover edition because of the extra artwork.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good intro to Norse "myths" for young people!
Simplified watered down versions of stories from the Eddas. This book seems to be aimed at a late elementary or jr. high school age reader. For that target audience this is a great introduction and would probably be the best thing you could buy if you were trying to picque a young persons interest in the Norse "Myths". If your an adult there are several other books on this subject that I would recomend over this one though.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to leave a lasting legacy to your grandchildren
