Product Description
Founded by free people of color in Philadelphia in the aftermath of the American Revolution, the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church emerged in the nineteenth century as the preeminent black institution in the United States. In 1896, the church opened mission work in South Africa, absorbing an independent "Ethiopian" church founded by dissident African Christians a few years earlier. In the process, the church helped ignite one of the most influential popular movements in South African history.

Songs of Zion examines this remarkable historical convergence from both sides of the Atlantic. James Campbell charts the origins and evolution of black American independent churches, arguing that the very act of becoming Christian forced African Americans to reflect on their relationship to their ancestral continent. He then turns to South Africa, exploring the AME Church's entrance and evolution in a series of specific South African contexts. Throughout the book, Campbell focuses on the comparisons that Africans and African Americans themselves drew between their situations. Their transatlantic encounter, he argues, enabled both groups to understand and act upon their worlds in new ways. ... Read more

Excerpt: Great MigrationCivil Rights Movements 18961954 and19551968Second Great MigrationAfrocentrism Richard Allen (February 14, 1760 March 26, 1831) was a minister, educator, writer, and the founder in 1816 of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME), the first independent black denomination in the United States. He opened his first church in 1794 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was elected the first bishop of the AME Church. Allen had started as a Methodist preacher but wanted to establish a black congregation independent of white control. The AME church is the oldest denomination among independent African-American churches. Richard Allen was born on February 14, 1760, in Germantown, Pennsylvania (now a part of Philadelphia.) Allen's biracial mother and African father were both held as slaves by Quaker lawyer and jurist Benjamin Chew, so Allen himself was born into slavery; After Chew suffered a financial setback, he sold Allen's parents and their four children to Stokeley Sturgis, whose plantation was near Dover, Delaware. As Allen and his brother grew older, they attended meetings of the local Methodist Society. Richard had taught himself to read and write. Converted early, he joined the Methodists at the age of 17. He began evangelizing and attending services so regularly that he attracted criticism from local slave owners. Allen and his brother redoubled their efforts for Sturgis. Excerpt: St. John African Methodist Episcopal Church -Organized in the fall of 1865, the first minister of St. John was Rev. W. T. Osborne, who was also the first African American minister in Nebraska. The first meetings being held at a private residence on Capitol Avenue and Ninth Street in present-day downtown Omaha. After worshiping for a short time on Harney Street, the church moved to Douglas and Fifteenth Streets until the summer of 1867. That year a lot was purchased on the corner of Eighteenth and Webster Streets in Near North Omaha. The original church, designed by renowned local African American architect Clarence W. Wigington, was built for $1,000. The longest standing member of the church was Mrs. Eliza Turner, who until her death in 1938 regularly attended St. John's for seventy years. Today St. John hosts a thriving congregation, and the church serves in a variety of capacities to the surrounding community. Located at 2402 North 22nd Street in Omaha, St. John A.M.E. Church building was designed by local architect Frederick S. Stott in 1921 in the Prairie School style. In 1947 an auditorium was added, and additional rooms were finished in 1956. The building is remarkable for its reflection of the progressive attitude of its congregation at a time when traditional values in religious architecture were prevalent. The building is recognized as an important contribution to the Prairie School style, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in May 1980. ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=10406383 ...
