Extractions: Aban Bana Subtopics: Reference: Related Articles: Related Links: Dear Friends and Fellow Zoroastrians: It is important that I mention right at the beginning of my talk that I am not speaking in the capacity of a research scholar or an authority on the subject of the Zoroastrian Religion, but as a lay-person, informing the listeners about a movement, a philosophy and a world-conception which deeply reveres the teachings of Zarathushtra, and which has an approach to the subject which is different from the conventional approach. Where this difference lies, I shall try to elaborate and clarify in my talk, which has the sole purpose of providing information for listeners. It should in no way be regarded as trying to convince or convert. One of the fundamental principles underlying this philosophy and movement is the principle of freedom, and accordingly this speaker wishes to leave listeners free to accept or reject what is being presented. This very principle of freedom also underlies the basic tenets of the Zoroastrian religion, so there we have the foundation on which to base a dialogue. Great truths of the past ages, spiritually significant events, had their physical-material working on the earthly plane, and these facts were documented by the seers and the scribes of those times. In later times, these truths have to be imparted in a form suitable for the epoch in which they are communicated. In our present epoch, the scientific one, the form of communication is scientific too, hence material.

There are currently three main calendars in use: Fasli, Shahanshahi, and Qadimi. The oldest Zoroastrian calendar ('Old Avestan') was evidently a seasonal one, but it is not clear how it was kept in harmony with the seasons. In later years ('Younger Avesta' and Sasanian times) the prescribed method was to add a month every 120 years, but none of the three modern calendars follow this tradition. Cf. Denkard 3, chapter 419 and Bundahishn chapter 25. FASLI ('seasonal'): A religious calendar which is kept in harmony with the seasons by intercalculating one day every four years, patterned after the Gregorian calendar. Naw Ruz (New Year's Day) is fixed on March 21. SHAHANSHAHI (or Shenshai): The calendar of many Parsee Zoroastrians, including some of the more influential Dasturs (High Priests). It is based on a religious calendar which was theoretically synchronized with the seasons by intercalculating a month every 120 years, but the intercalculation was not consistently followed. Naw Ruz was observed on August 23, 1995. A recent proposal would reform the Shahanshahi calendar by bringing it back into harmony through the intercalculation of whole months. QADIMI ('ancient'): In 1746 a group of priests and laymen in Surat adopted the Irani calendar on the assumption that it represented an older tradition. The Qadimi calendar is one month ahead of the Shahanshahi.

Extractions: The early progenitors of today's Zoroastrian community were nomads who had a keen perception of the seasonal changes and a deep respect for the elements of Nature. In their innate wisdom they chose to start the New Year on the day of Vernal Equinox (March 21) which marks the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. Also, on this day the sun enters the constellation Aries and is directly over the equator making the day and night equal. Ancient Zoroastrians observed a 360 days Calendar of 12 months with each month comprising of 30 days. The months were named after seasonal festivals but the days of each month were merely numbered from one to thirty. New Year was celebrated on the day of Vernal Equinox and to keep the 360 days Calendar in harmony with the seasons, a thirteenth month was intercalated every six years. Since each year the spring season brings the resurgence of life in Nature, the first day of Spring was deemed to be the day of renewal, hope and joy and was celebrated as Noruz (New Day). In the middle of the fifth century BCE, during the Achamenian era, a distinctive 360 days Calendar was created. Each day (Roz) of the twelve months was assigned to an Amesha Spenta or Yazata; while all the months, except the first and tenth, were assigned to the Yazatas. The first month, Fravadin, was assigned to the Fravashis and the tenth month, Dae, was named for the Creator. Each month (Mah) was divided into four parts which began with a day dedicated to the Creator.
