Extractions: Why Does Tim Russert Associate With Don Imus' Bigotry? March 1, 2000 If you're concerned about bigotry on the syndicated radio show "Imus in the Morning," you should just "get over it." That's what the show's star, Don Imus, told journalist Jeff Greenfield on CNN 's Larry King Live last week (2/24/00). Greenfield was questioning Imus about recent columns in two prominent newspapers that documented a pattern of slurs by Imus and his on-air sidekicks against people of color, gay men and lesbians ( Boston Globe Newsday Imus himself has referred to one African-American journalist as "a cleaning lady," another as a "quota hire," and tennis player Amelie Mauresmo as "a big old lesbo." Imus taunted another reporter as a "beanie-wearing little Jewboy," called a disabled colleague "the cripple," and has said that he picked one of his producers to do "nigger jokes." (60 Minutes, 7/19/98) National politicians and beltway journalists have brought the "Imus in the Morning" show to nationwide prominencethe show is now carried by cable network MSNBC by making "Imus" a regular stop on their media rounds.

What he doesn't have is the actual right to votelet alone set footon the floor of the Senate, which is what happens when the jurisdiction one represents is, effectively speaking, a colony. 'No New Yorker would stand for this,' D.C.'s "shadow senator" seethes as he tugs at the lump of rock and metal on his fingera 1996 Yankees championship ring, given to his father by George Steinbrenner. "Would a New Yorker put up with having to get permission from a congressman in Kansaswhere they're still debating the merits of teaching evolutionto implement a working local AIDS policy?" he rhetorically asks, no trace of Washington deference in his combative New York accent. "We had an effective needle-exchange program that was working here, but a congressman from Kansas blocked it so he could score political points back home."

Extractions: Anabaptist/Mennonite Group Dynamics Leonard Gross[1] I used to enjoy the New Yorker magazine's "Talk of the Town," the way it generally began with something like: "Last week as we were traveling by taxi past Wall Street," or "We happened onto an old friend yesterday, in Central Park, feeding the pigeons." Or something like that. I knew it was a literary "we," a construct, yet nevertheless, it worked for me granting the feeling that New York indeed was a community, with fine human interaction, a place where one could spend his or her life in meaningful ways. I think the new editor of the New Yorker made a mistake in stopping this, some six or more years ago, for I have sorely missed experiencing this meaningful literary "we" ever since. I think about it each week when I turn to "Talk of the Town," and alas, find out that New York City is no longer "we." And I think to myself, perhaps Greater New York is not the place where the "we" of close community most naturally comes into its own. Maybe it is indeed more naturally found in closely knit congregations such as Michael Sattlers and Pilgram Marpecks, founded as they were, directly and indirectly, upon the deeper implications of what the two 1527 Swiss Anabaptist congregational statements were all about. And I ask myself: What would it be like for me to be part of the actual "we" of New York City? And, conversely, what would it be like, for our purposes here, to be part of Pilgram Marpecks Augsburg congregation, or Conrad Grebels Zurich congregation, or Michael Sattlers congregation at Horb?
