As Catholicism had been seen as the spiritual power of Europe for almost 2,000 years and Marxist ideology was thought to have been originated from the European industrial age, both were seen by many as consanguineous brothers . Having taken birth in different historical settings and times, the brothers became ideological enemies: extreme monotheism vs. extreme atheism. Being stemmed from a same cultural root, both shared an affinity for utopian supremacy, either âRedâ or âBlackâ. They will tolerate no other color in this multifaceted world. It seems so odd that Pure Land and Zen should be reconciled, since their philosophic basis and their view on life vary so much. But in China, Korea and Vietnam, these two schools did come to form a syncretic, holistic view of Buddhism. And this is the topic that I have chosen to speak on today. First, I should mention a little about the history of Buddhism in Vietnam. Buddhism came to Vietnam from India by sea in the first century of the common era, during the time of King Asoka, India's great Buddhist emperor. They brought, of course, Hinayana Buddhism, today known as Theravada Buddhism. Two hundred years later a Chinese community was well established. From a description of a Chinese convert, who wrote that the monks wore saffron robes, shaved their heads and ate only one meal a day, it is clear that Theravadan monks were serving their community.

It opened at its present site in 1991 and maintains ties with other Vietnamese temples in the state and with the international Vietnamese Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. About 50 people come to the weekly services, but for larger celebrations, the temple accommodates 300-500 people. The temple's members, about 10 percent of whom are ethnic Chinese from Vietnam, come from across the greater Boston area. The temple is governed by a six-member board of directors and its president, Mrs. Bich Nguyen. Temple Vietnam offers bilingual services on the first Sunday of the month, meditation and Dharma talks, occasional Saturday meditation retreats, and, on Sunday afternoon, classes in which children learn the Vietnamese language, history, geography and tradition. Dr. Nguyen says that all forms of meditation are welcome. "What matters is not the method but if they bring you back to your true self." All activities are open to the public.

The community plans to expand the temple with a permanent bandstand for outdoor services. Summertime celebrations, such as the Vietnamese Mother's Day, often draw hundreds of people and overflow the center. For larger ceremonies, the community has invited monks from California and India to worship with them.

There is also a flower vase on the ancestors' altar, the flowers of which are perfumed and rises to the ancestors. Very popular flowers are the likes of lotus or lilies. There are other objects as well which are also offerred to ancestors.
