Moon, who changed his name to Sun Myung Moon (meaning "someone who has clarified the Truth, or Shining Sun and Moon) has a vision of Jesus when he was 16 years old. In that visit, he was advised that he had been choosen to fullfill the mission of Jesus. He was a prisoner of war during the Korean War. After the war, he walked from North Korea, where he had been inprisioned, to Pusan in the Southeast where he took up his ministry. There are several good sources that detail the early life of Reverend Moon and his church. For class, we will view a short videotape (12:30 min) produced by the Unification Chruch entitled "The Great Victory of the True Parents." While this video obviously presents Reverend Moon from the Church perspective, it is well done and conveys a basic overview of one of the more successful new faith traditions of the second half of the twentieth centruy. At that latter date the Reverend Moon began the tradition of Hoon Dok Hae, including a daily study session in the morning, for which excerpts from his sermons were prepared, and regarded as "complementary expression of the Completed Testament Word," together with the Wolli Kangron. Another relevant change saw the Reverend and Mrs. Moon shift the focus of their activity from North America to South America. In numerous speeches the Reverend Moon referred to North America as the equivalent of the Protestant North Europe and Latin America of the Catholic Southern Europe. The Reverend Moon claims to support the "greater unification" of the Americas before attention can shift towards Europe and Africa. There has been greater missionary activity in Latin America and considerable financial investment in Uruguay. This has alarmed the Catholic church in some countries. There have been campaigns in the Latin American media, for example, to ban foreign Unificationist missionaries.

Extractions: Aug 1, 2002 - I was a guest on the Peter Boyles Show , on 630AM KHOW Radio in Denver. Discussion revoled around the theology of "Heavenly Deception" and Moon's desire to create a One World Theocracy, or government ruled by religious authority, which Moon believes he and his descendants are destined to rule. Moon's 50-state U.S. tour continues, but not without protest. I was a guest on a large Christian Radio station in Milwaukee , which has taken the lead in exposing the heresies and lies of Moon's teachings and along with several local Pastors. They are encouraging clergy not to allow Moon to speak in their churches. They have successful encouraged one church against allowing Moon to speak there, and Moon's people had to change the location to a hotel ballroom. When the media asked the Unification Church about it, they claimed there had been a bomb threat. The media checked with all local authorities and NO BOMB THREAT had been reported. Possibly more "Heavenly Deception" which allows members of Moon's church to lie and deceive, as long as it is for a "good" purpose. Additionally, it has been reported that a Pastor in Mobile, Alabama was fired for allowing Moon to speak in his church. Moon's teachings and beliefs are contrary to scripture and his influence is like a cancer slowly spreading through the Christian churches. Moon sent missionaries to America in 1959, and established his church's presence in this country in San Francisco first, quickly spreading to cover most of the nation's most populous cities. The symbol of The Unification Church has been compared by some to the Japanese Imperial Warflag. Moon himself designed the symbol, which is revered by members of his church, but it can still strike fear into those that have left the dangerous grasp of the Moonies. Conditioned through a very controlling environment that suffocates individuality, which Moon considers a sin, especially of Americans, it is often difficult to leave the mental programming even decades later. They have 200 front organizations many of which are family oriented (since Moon believes that this is his mission of restoring the family). Many promote world peace through unification theology. To con tribute to any of these organizations is contributing money to Moon's cause of world domination. In the 1970's Moon had told some of his leaders that he was preparing an international infrastructure that would be in place to establish a new world order as they anticipate the worlds economy will collapse.

I would like to begin my presentation by going back to 1975 and relating a horribly frightening experience. A young missionary who had recently converted to the Unification Church was standing in front of Madison Square Garden giving out pamphlets inviting people to an event. Suddenly he was attacked by a large woman. The missionary could easily have subdued her if he had wanted to fight back, but he refrained. Then, the woman was joined by two men. Together, the three of them attacked the missionary, threw him to the ground and started to kick him while they screamed, "Moonie! Moonie! Moonie!" The young man lay on the ground being kicked. His pamphlets were strewn all over the street. Yet the most horrible thing for this person was not being attacked. Previously, he had been attacked and mugged in one of those bad experiences people sometimes have in New York City. The most horrible experience in this instance was that when he looked for pity, for compassion, for empathy, for support, among the people who were around, he found none. The eyes that he found were eyes of accusation. He deserved to be kicked because he was a "Moonie."

It started with the founder, who suffered a lot in his life. Six times he went to prison. He was tortured and suffered incredibly. I dont want to go into detail about the different persecutions that you are already aware of, in particular here in the United States in the 1970s and 80sthe deprogramming and all that. There is an interesting book by Carlton Sherwood entitled Inquisition. It is a masterpiece because he conducted thorough research on the background, the misunderstanding, persecution, and bigotry toward Unificationists, the Unification Church, and the worldwide Unification movement. I will focus on more recent issues. The Schengen treaty was already mentioned, and how it blocks Reverend Moon from entering not only Germany and France but nine other countries in the European Community that are signatories to this treaty. As mentioned earlier, the official reason for not allowing Reverend Moon and his wife to enter these countries is basically the alleged danger to public order. My understanding is that the Schengen Treaty was originally designed to prevent terrorists and the Mafia from entering the countries of the European Community, and now it is applied to Reverend and Mrs. Moon. This is one of the cases we are trying to resolve.

He and his wife, called The True Parents where he is the True Father and his wife the True Mother, are the first couple to be able to bring forth children with no original sin. "The cross is the symbol of the defeat of Christianity." The Bible is considered scripture along with Moon’s work "Divine Principles." Sin is genetically based. It is not a moral issue. The thieves on the cross represent political movements. The thief on the right side of Jesus represents democracy. The thief on the left of Jesus is communism. Adam and Eve fell because of sexual sin. Eve had sexual relations with Satan. Jesus is a ‘true person’ though not God in flesh. The Holy Spirit is ‘the True Mother,’ or ‘the Second Eve." The church denies the doctrine of the Trinity.
