Culture is one influence which helps shape individual concepts of reality. Just as there are differences of opinion between individuals, there are also differences of opinion between cultures. Political and religious wars sometimes result. My own sense of reality is subjective, and undoubtedly flawed by all the errors of thinking that tend to befall human beings. I feel, however, that behind all the subjective realities there is actually an objective reality; truth, were it to be known. This feeling is based on our success in manipulating the physical world; doing things like sending men to the moon. If the underlying science was very faulty, the probability of such things happening would be very low. To approach truth, critical thinking is not a tool to be lightly thrown away. Feelings and intuition undoubtedly have their value in getting through life, but I am uncomfortable delivering myself to faith in belief systems so long as I find reasons to doubt them. Over the years, I have investigated various occult subjects. Information, and the means by which it is stored and transmitted is an important element of my thoughts concerning many of them, especially slippery fields of "spirit" that are difficult to test otherwise. Simeon Stefanidakis The events which took place with the Fox family in Hydesville, New York, are generally considered to have initiated the Modern Spiritualist Movement. We shall look at the reasons for this a little later on; but first, let us look at the characters involved and the events which took place on that fateful evening of March 31, 1848. Hydesville was a small hamlet about 20 miles from Rochester, New York. On December 11, 1847, John Fox, along with his wife Margaret and their two daughters, Kate and Margaretta, moved into the house in question. The house had a reputation of being "haunted"; there were several instances recorded of raps, taps, and other noises. In fact, the prior tenant, Michael Weakman, moved out of the house because of the inexplicable disturbances. Beginning at around the middle of March, 1848, the Fox family began to be disturbed by the strange sounds and activities. The children were so alarmed at what was happening that they refused to sleep apart and were taken into the bedroom of their parents. The sounds were so loud, that the beds themselves often shook. Every possible opportunity was made to ascertain the source of the sounds, but to no avail. Finally, on March 31st, Kate Fox made history. She challenged the mysterious unseen power to repeat the snaps of her fingers.

USA that began the modern-day Spiritualist movement. A lessor known fact is that central to these events were three young Upper Canadian ladies who were born in a small farming community; Consecon (near Belleville) Ontario. The Fox family, which included the three young girls in question Leah (Ann), Margaret, (Maggie), and Catherine (Kate); moved to Hydesville on December 11 th 1847. However, it was on March 31 st (the day before April Fools) that the girl’s lives would forever be changed by what was considered to be a classic and well-documented example of direct communications with the spirits of the deceased. It began with a series of strange noises such as knocks and footsteps that could not be accounted for. There were vibrations felt, which affected the family’s chairs and beds as well. Both Mr. And Mrs. Fox were highly disturbed by these occurrences and quickly concluded that a restless ghost must plague their home. Upon hearing the knocks, the children would try to imitate them by snapping their fingers and clapping their hands. Catherine is reported to have spoken aloud while doing so. “Mr. Splitfoot, do as I do,” she said and the knocks would then respond in kind! These first experiments progressed to the point were the children and their mother would ask questions of this ‘entity’ and devised a series of knocks to signify a yes or no answer. It was by this simple method that the Fox family learned the following about their otherworldly guest: “it was a man, aged thirty-one years, (who) had been murdered in this house and his remains were buried in the cellar.”

It flourished in the second half of the 19th century and considerably affected both Universalism and Unitarianism at the time. One event that precipitated "Modern Spiritualism," as it was called, was the 1847 publication of The Principles of Nature , composed by Andrew Jackson Davis, a young entranced seer from Poughkeepsie, New York. He claimed the spirit of Emanuel Swedenborg had dictated the book, an airy speculation on the evolution of the cosmos, culture and religion. In 1848 three young sisters, Margaret, Kate and Leah Fox, generated public excitement with their claim to have contacted spirits of the dead through telegraphic rapping in their home near Rochester. From the Fox sisters' experience came the pattern for the séance, or spirit circle. Soon many "mediums," especially sensitive to "impressions" from spirits, guided hopeful participants. The number of spiritualists in America grew rapidly in the decade of the 1850s. Just before the Civil War spiritualists and non-spiritualists alike estimated the number as two to three million (out of a U.S. population of 30 million). Estimates varied wildly since spiritualism was never a systematically organized phenomenon. It was pervasive into the early 1870s and then began to fade, though never dying out completely. Spiritualism attracted people from every religious background. Many Universalists and Unitarians, especially, were drawn by the hope for communion with the spirits of the dead.
