Everyone who reads JBE has heard of Soka Gakkai, and several million people-mainly in Japan but also in many other countries of the world-belong to the movement and regularly practice individual or group daimoku (chanting of the title of the Lotus Suutra "namu-myoho-renge-kyo") and gongyo (recitation of sections of the Lotus Suutra The overwhelming majority of members of SGI-UK are in no doubt that the practice of Buddhism delivers the results that it claims, and mostly here and now. According to Wilson and Dobbelaere "of the 96 per cent who chant for particular goals, only 3 per cent said that those goals had not been realized" (195). The goals SGI Buddhists aim at are immensely varied, ranging from acquisition of specific sums of money to compassion towards others and the spread of Buddhism world wide. Soka Gakkai appears able to encompass all of these disparate aims, to foster in its members a spirit of independence and enterprise and, despite the apparently highly individualistic nature of the basic chanting practice, to mobilize the majority of members into collective activities promoting personal, social, cultural, environmental, and spiritual uplift on a global scale.

Times (The URL is at the Bottom of this article): By Alexander Dworkowitz October 25, 2001 A Buddhist temple in Flushing is circulating pamphlets suggesting that practices by a rival Buddhist group and moral decay brought about the Sept. 11 attack on the World Trade Center. The October issue of Emyo, the bimonthly newsletter of the Buddhist temple Nichiren Shoshu Myosetsuji at 143-63 Beech Ave., discusses the views of the High Priest Nikken Shonin. It was distributed to the nearly 2,000 members of the temple in early October. "Viewing these things from a broad perspective, it is disregard for our correct Buddhism that has given rise to various heretical Buddhist teachings functioning as poison, and as a result many people are suffering," Shonin was quoted as saying in the newsletter. The pamphlet, which was written in Japanese and translated into English, goes on to say that "terrorism in the United States is the omen of world war.... The slanderous members of the Soka Gakkai must truly fear this punishment."

I nurse my baby girl while sharing childbirth stories with two other postpartum moms. The three of us are black. Our talk turns to religion. I say I'm Buddhist. Next thing I know, my Baptist-preacher father is being called a bad parent. He isn't around to defend himself. Almost 13 years ago I emerged from a life of hellish suffering. I had been in and out of battles with eating disorders, suicidal depression and substance abuse, and I had dropped out of college. I found unshakable happiness within myself by embracing Soka Gakkai Buddhism. If I had talked to that mother on the maternity ward a bit longer, maybe she would have blasted me for choosing a religion that's not "black enough," like others have. When I'm labeled a cultural sellout for not being Christian, I reply that, like many blacks, I believe Jesus may have had African ancestry, but most folks believe Jesus lived in the Middle East. That area is not known for having much American-style, "it's-a-black-thing" flavor.

"The Human Revolution,'' a history [sic] of Soka Gakkai International They worship in a quiet neighborhood in St. Paul inside a white concrete building, but their Buddhist origins emerged from the violence and ruins of World War II. The religion is Soka Gakkai International. It is one of perhaps 1,000 branches of Buddhism. Since World War II, it has steadily grown in membership in 128 countries. The local Soka Gakkai community has about 450 members across the Twin Cities. They worship together once a month in a building on Eustis Street on the western edge of St. Paul. Only the letters SGI identify the building as a place of worship. But inside on the first Sunday of each month, about 50 people gather to chant and contemplate life. The Twin Cities' Soka Gakkai leader is Howard Dunlavy, a native Minnesotan who discovered the religion at a critical juncture in his life.

It's like these good Christian beliefs that I grew up on, and I just don't need that in my adult life...Buddhism, not chanting, is a way of life; Buddhism takes years. It's pretentious to call yourself a Buddhist just because you chant. So what does all this mean? The abilities of chanting as a valid form of spiritual development is not the issue here; all of the Nichiren sects chant as do members of the Pure Land, and chanting predates recorded history. At question is the belief that worship of a relic, allegedly entrusted with magical powers, can bring material gain. At issue here is the question of whether one allies oneself with an organization which stresses that only its beliefs and its beliefs alone are correctan organization which subjugates the individual's development of an independent, well informed political and social conscience and substitutes the organizational point of viewor if one should strive for spiritual development on one's own, placing morality above materialism. It is a question that each of the organization's followers would do well to search their own hearts for an answer to.

Many incidents and events going back to the Soka Gakkai's inception before World War II indicated that within the Nichiren Shoshu priesthood there existed the potential for hatred and jealousy toward lay believers.
