Extractions: A handful of "crazy men" appeared in the 1930's making absurd claims about the Emperor of Abyssinia being the Messiah: Ras Tafari, afterwards crowned as Haile Selassie, which translated means "the Power of Trinity." There were not many that expected the profound effect the movement would have on Jamaican society. The Rastafarians were long-haired and bearded long before the advent of hippy fashions. These men were ready to suffer for their beliefs. Rastafarianism is assisted by sacramental ganja smoking, drumming, Bible reading and chanting. They have also acquired a capacity to culture ideas through music, costume, physical exercises, art, poetry and indiqenous "cottage" industries like broom-making. Reggae music developed in the rasta "yards" and produced superstars like the late Bob Marley. Politicians are very conscious of Rasta influence among Jamaica's youthful majority. They even awarded Bob Marley the Jamaican Order of Merit while he was dying of cancer. The "Dread," the true Rasta, is a peaceful, careful, preferably self-employed achiever who stays within the law - save for his sacramental smoke.

Rastafarians speak out against; poverty, oppression and inequality.....not just religious ideas but global problems. Rastafarians will use the Bible for guidence. Selassie was not a Rastafarian himself. He was a devout Christian. In fact, no one is really sure what he thought of the whole Rastafarian movement. When a group of Rastas went to Ethiopia to honour him, an official of the palace told them to go away! This did not make the Rastas question their belief, it only made it stronger. God is not supposed to know he is God. When Haile Selassie was reported dead, Rastas would not believe it. They believed that it was a trick of the media to try and bring their faith down. Rastafarians believe that Haile Selassie I has trodded on to the perfect flesh, and sits on the highest point of Mount Zion where He and Empress Menen await the time of judgement.

His organization's aim was to unite black people (Negroes) with their rightful homeland, Africa. He prophesied about his people being redeemed by a future black African king. The visit of Haile Selassie to Jamaica on April 21, 1966 was a momentous occasion for the Rastafarian movement. He encouraged the followers to liberate their Jamaican brothers before they sought to immigrate to Ethiopia. Haile Selassie's death on August 27, 1975 came with many responses from the Rastafarian community. Some said that his death was a fabrication. Others said his death was of little consequence because he was a personification of God. However, today followers of the Rastafarian movement still hold to the claim the he is God.

One interesting book is Millard Faristzaddi's Itations of Jamaica and I Rastafari the one-volume, 1982 text is filled with pictures of Rastafarians, poetry written about and by Rastas, and sections about the religious creed. One of the most interesting sections discussed the particulars about how Rastafarians speak. Marcus Garvey planted the seeds for the movement in the 1920s, when he advocated a "back to Africa" consciousness. In part of his teachings, he said "look to Africa, when a black king shall be crowned, for the day of deliverance is at hand" (Wilder 73). In 1930, Ras Tafari was crowned Emporer Haile Selassie I in Ethiopia. Many people thought he fulfilled Garvey's prophecy and looked to him for guidance in how to begin their new way of life. The Rastafarians (as they were known) emphasized "black pride, and the need to regain the heritage the black race temporarily lost by straying from holy ways" (73). True Rastafarians live peaceful, pious lives with nothing more than material essentials. A large part of their living includes a study of scripture. They also "[reject] the white man's world the modern "Babylon" and its greed, dishonesty, lasciviousness, meat-eating habits, "devil soup" (alcohol) and chemical-oriented technology. The two most obvious external marks of the Rasta his "dreadlocks" and his proud, strutting walk are inspired by the image of the lion in Selassie's title, Lion of Judah" (73).
