You notice at the bottom of the ad that the group calls itself "Old Catholic" or "Old Roman Catholic." You are naturally quite puzzled by these terms, but you think that anyone who claims to be "Old" or "Roman" or "Catholic" can't really be too much different from the traditional Catholic priests you know. But, you ask, are they really legitimate Roman Catholics, and can one go to their Masses? The response a traditional Catholic priest is obliged to give to your question is "No, on both counts." But why, you ask, since they say they stand for all that we do? Your priest will respond by saying that they are and always have been considered heretics and schismatics by the Catholic Church, and that they pose a grave danger to your soul if you have anything to do with them. More and more in these times of confusion, a traditional Catholic priest finds himself confronted with such questions from the laity about Old Catholics. Each Old Catholic Church is autonomous, and the local Church in each country is the continuation of the Catholic Church as it was before the Bishop of Rome asserted his supreme authority, by divine right, over the life of the Catholic Church. In The Netherlands , in 1702 the Pope deposed Archbishop Petrus Codde and installed an Apostolic Vicar. As a consequence, in 1723 the Metropolitan Chapter of Utrecht decided to elect a new Archbishop. After his election, Cornelius Steenoven was consecrated by Bishop Dominique Maria Varlet. The Archbishop and the Metropolitan Chapter were excommunicated by the Pope, so it was necessary to reorganize the life of the Church without links to Rome. He was one of the consecrators of the Right Rev. Hiram Richard Hulse on 12 January 1915 in New York City. Dr. Hulse was the PECUSA Bishop of Cuba from 1915 to 1938. From 1916 to 1950 Canadian Old Catholic parishes were under the direct administration of the Archdiocese of NAORCC, with, from time to time local bishops overseeing some Canadian parishes. On the 22nd April 1950 the Old Catholic Diocese of Hamilton , with its Pro-Cathedral located at St. Francis of Assisi Old Roman Catholic Church, 420 Aberdeen Avenue, Hamilton, Ontario, joined the NAORCC. On that date, the Rt. Rev. George Frank Davis, who had Old Catholic episcopal succession via the Mathew-Bacon line of Old Catholic bishops, was sub conditione consecrated into the de Landas Berghes-Carfora line by the Rt. Rev. Francis Michael Donahue. (Bishop Donahue had been consecrated by Archbishop Carfora on 3 November 1946.) These efforts at reform became known collectively as the Reformation. Two very different reformations resulted from these tensions. One became known as the independent communities that became Old Catholic. They were called Old Catholics because they sought to turn the clock back and adhere to the beliefs and practices of the Catholic Church prior to the various schisms.

Churches have declared themselves to be Old Catholic in various times and places. The first group of Churches to proclaim themselves Old Catholic, appeared in the Netherlands in the 18th century when the Dutch catholics extended sympathy and hospitality to French catholics who were denied religious liberty in France. Their defense of religious liberty brought them condemnation from Rome, and since 1739, the Archbishopric of Utrecht has remained independent of Rome. Old Catholics have always held that under Christ, one finds perfect freedom. Rather than disavow their historic principles, they have maintained a separate existence from Rome since the 18th century. Other Churches joined them in 1870 when the first Vatican Council proclaimed the doctrine of Papal Infallibility. Since only Christ is infallible many Churches in Austria, Germany, Bavaria, and Switzerland realizing their position was closer to Utrecht than to Rome, proclaimed themselves Old Catholic.

Extractions: Back to Anglican Independent Communion A very BRIEF PRIMER ON "APOSTOLIC SUCCESSION" We of the Anglican Independent Communion love and serve the Holy Trinity, the Body of Christ, and our neighbours as ourselves, within the spiritual tradition of "the One Catholic and Apostolic Church." A central pillar of this tradition is that the Apostles gave spiritual authority to bishops (overseers) to govern the Church (Acts 20:17) and to confer holy Orders and administer the rite of Confirmation. By the "imposition" of hands, and by the receiving of the Holy Ghost for the Office and Work of a Bishop, in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, (and in the Anglican tradition) with the delivery of the Holy Bible, a bishop is consecrated and that "line" is continued. By this manner, Apostolic authority has been passed on down through the One Catholic and Apostolic Church for 2,000 years. St. Augustine, however, articulated the doctrine that the orthodoxy and the validity of the apostolic succession of a bishop were two separate issues. Bishops who were consecrated in direct Apostolic Succession although "heretics" could still exercise their office as stewards of the sacraments in a valid manner. This means, from this perspective they could still "validly" ordain and consecrate priests, bishops and confirm children even if they were not "orthodox" in their own lives and beliefs. This addresses continuity by the physical "laying on of hands", but does it properly consider the function of the Holy Ghost and the Bible in the process? The Orthodox Church has other strong opinions on this point.

Extractions: International Old Catholic Bishops' Conference The International Old Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Union of Utrecht (IBC) met in Wislikofen, Switzerland, July 6-16, 1997. It evaluated the study process which, according to the decisions taken at the IBC meeting in 1991, took place in the member churches on the issue of the ordination of women and its consequences for the churches and their ecumenical relations. This process became necessary because of the divergent development on the issue of the ordination of women in the member churches of the Union of Utrecht. As a consequence the statement of the IBC of 1976, which excludes the possibility of the ordination of women, could not be supported any longer by all member churches. The evaluation of the results brought the Bishops' Conference to realize that some Old Catholic churches deem the ordination of women necessary for the sake of the credibility of their mission, which is why they want to implement the ordination as soon as possible. Other churches are convinced that they cannot ordain women, because their internal and external credibility would be damaged. Faced with this situation, the Bishops' Conference states that a provision of the Agreement of the Union of Utrecht, which is one of the fundamental documents of the churches united in the Union of Utrecht, cannot be fully implemented any longer. According to this provision, the Old Catholic churches are in full communion with each other. Since some churches cannot, for the sake of their convictions, recognize the ordination of women, this communion is no longer fully shared.

I believe Catholicism, especially, has changed significantly within the past century. We can easily see this; not only is it visible in the participation (or lack there of) in Church services, but also in the philosophical and theological beliefs that Catholics have had and held in their hearts and homes. everything else seems more important than God or my intangible soul. Like they say: "Out of sight, out of mind." Perceptions of Heaven and Hell have been altered greatly, whether by "Generation X" or the preceding generations of humans, the beliefs are new ones. The idea seems to be one of a spiritual existence, where nothing takes a physical form. Hell and Heaven are seen as degrees of the afterlife. It would seem (in this way of thinking), that after dying, you're actions on Earth would determine your place in coordination with the Great Being. If you didn't obey God's laws, you would be placed at a distance from Him. If you were extremely far out, the isolation, cold, and lonliness of your position for all eternity would certainly feel like Hell. On the opposite end, if you were holy during your life on Earth, you would be close or right next to God. The love, understanding, compassion and pure radiance and warmth you would feel by God's presence would feel like Heaven.

The history of our church then begins with the Book of Acts (with which I assume you are familiar). It continues through the undivided church of the first millennium, whose Catholic faith it upholds. It is at the time of the Great Schism of 1054 that the histories of our individual churches diverge from each other. Some of us are descended primarily from the Eastern or Orthodox branch of Christianity, others from the Western or Roman branch. Many of us represent a union of both branches. But all of us trace our Apostolic succession back to the Patriarchs of the undivided Church, and through them to apostolic times. th and 16 th centuries, and the emergence in the 19 th century of the Old Catholic Church and the Utrecht Union. We will see that most of our churches are descended from the Old Catholic Church, yet many of us also have recent bishops of the Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox churches in our apostolic line. The independent Catholic movement can be viewed as a further fracturing of the Roman monolith. Yet in truth, it represents an attempt to bring back the pieces, laying the basis for true unity by discarding demands for uniformity.
