Previously, the IFSHJ was located at the Pivnick Center for Humanistic Judaism in Farmington Hills, MI. The office, which is temporarily located on 57th Street and will begin a search for permanent space after the conference, will become an international centre for secular Jews throughout the world. Its focus will be to support secular Jewish communities internationally. It will serve as a resource and clearing house for general information and develop literature and educational material, conferences, symposia, and communications to assist in building communities and promote the message and philosophy of Secular Humanistic Judaism in the world community. Ms. Baron has been a public relations professional for more than 15 years, developing and implementing programs for non-profit, arts, and technology clients. For the last 11 years, she was president of her own public relations agency in New York City. She has been involved in Secular Humanistic Judaism since 1989, and founded The City Congregation for Humanistic Judaism in New York City in 1991 in order to provide her then-very-young daughter a cultural Jewish community where she would be educated in her Jewish heritage from a secular humanistic perspective. She served as president of The City Congregation until 1999. She remains on the Board of the Congregation and is co-director of The City Congregation KidSchool. In the early 1990s she served on the Board of Directors of the Society for Humanistic Judaism.

Extractions: Over the last two hundred years, many Jews have been alienated from the traditional religious establishment. Many of them created religious alternatives to Orthodoxy. The Reform, the Conservative, and the Reconstructionist movements are the result of their work. But there were also many alienated Jews who were not comfortable with any religious alternative. They felt intensely Jewish but found no meaning in prayer or in theistic philosophies of life. Even redefining theistic vocabulary did not engage their interest. Like Reform and Conservative Jews, these secular Jews were the products of both the Enlightenment and the Emancipation. They valued reason, despised superstition, and were attracted to the idea of forging a "new" Jewish identity, one that was rooted in the experience and the culture of the past and one that reflected the beliefs and lifestyles of the present. Many of these Jews were attracted to the message and passions of Jewish nationalism. Being Jewish by nationality and not by religion gave them a sense of authenticity and integrity. Both the Yiddishist and Zionist varieties provided a Jewish home for these lovers of Jewish identity. Out of their commitments came language, literature, music, art, dance, theater, and ethical idealism that were both Jewish and secular. Both the revival of Hebrew as a spoken popular language and the establishment of the State of Israel were their creations. In fact, the most successful Jewish movement of the 20th century was Zionism. The culture of that state became the staple of much of Jewish Diaspora education.

Theology provides five common beliefs with regard to God today: Theism : believing in a Supreme Being, a supernatural creator-God who responds to prayer and worship and intervenes actively in the lives of people. Deism : believing in a Supreme Being, a supernatural creator-God who cannot respond to prayer and worship and who does not intervene in the lives of people. Pantheism : believing that God and nature are one and the same, or that God and some part of nature, such as life, are one and the same. Agnosticism : not knowing whether or not a Supreme Being exists. Atheism : believing that a Supreme Being does not exist. How does Humanistic Judaism relate to these theologies? It is clearly incompatible with theism. But Humanistic Judaism can be compatible with deism if the believer finds no need to worship a creator-God and if the believer attributes no moral authority to that God. It is not compatible with pantheism. Calling nature "God" is verbal confusion. Why not just call it "nature?" Humanistic Judaism is very compatible with agnosticism. Many, if not most, Humanistic Jews would describe themselves as agnostics.

Judaism, to most people, has always consisted of religion and peoplehood. This group does not practice religion nor Jewish peoplehood. The messiah of their philosophy was Stalin, whom they follow with blind obedience. Their peoplehood is communism. I do not see how the author can include them as a positive force in the life of Boulder. Would she also include the "Jews for Jesus" as movers? Humanistic Judaism is a philosophy affirming the power of individuals to achieve a meaningful and ethical life which lies within oneself and other people. Humanistic Jews believe that the message of Jewish history is self-reliance. Humanistic Judaism addresses the needs of cultural and nontheistic Jews worldwide who seek to identify with the Jewish people and Jewish heritage.

Wine spoke to a group of about 100 students and community members on the formation of Humanistic Judaism. Humanistic Judaism involves the cultural and social history of the Jewish people without relying on many of the formal traditions of religious Judaism. "It is a philosophy of life with a strong Jewish base shared by millions of Jews all over the world. It is about what do you as an individual believe without settling for a formal answer," Wine said. Wine was raised as a conservative Jew but said he did not connect with all parts of his religion. "Once services started, I had trouble saying the words. They were Jewish words but they were not what I believed," he said. Wine pursued his interests in theology, graduating from the University with a masters in philosophy. After earning his degree Wine joined the Reformed Congregate and later left to form the first congregation of Humanistic Judaism in 1963. He began with a community of eight families and steadily grew from there.

In 1963 he founded the Birmingham Temple in suburban Detroit, the first congregation of Humanistic Judaism. In 1969 he helped establish the Society for Humanistic Judaism to serve as the national outreach vehicle for the humanistic movement.
