Extractions: Project Studies and Interdisciplinarity By Prof., Dr. Peter Alheit, Dept. of Educational and Social Sciences, University of Bremen, Germany The first time I was confronted with the term `project' in an academic context, I was a second-year philosophy and theology student at Marburg, one of the most venerable of German universities. The year was 1968. Student groups had discovered the `project' idea and were demanding that a so-called `project week' be held in the theology faculty. To be quite honest, we were not at all clear in our minds about how such a week should be organised in practice. We had heard that similar forms of learning had been introduced at Heidelberg University and that these events had ended in tumultuous scenes. The very notion of ` project ' seemed to have revolutionary connotations, and that was reason enough to organise a similar week of our own. The buzzwords on everybody's lips were theory and praxis, science and society. At the time, our faculty heads were discussing new examination regulations. We, the students, eventually decided that we would subject the details of these regulations to critical analysis in various `project meetings'. The project week could commence. I should mention that we were in the middle of a politically hot summer - the German Bundestag was debating the `emergency laws', against which students were conducting a massive nationwide campaign, the SDS was preparing the Vietnam Congress in Berlin, and our lecturers were highly irritated by the behaviour of their students. This explains why a large majority of the faculty professors voted against the idea of the project week. The proposal was `alien to the discipline', as they put it, and served no purpose with respect to academic qualification. Moreover, the topics were `political', and the university was no place for such activities.

Hermeticism can refer to one of two things: The study and practice of occult philosophy and magic , of a type associated with writings attributed to the god Hermes Trismegistus , "Thrice-Greatest Hermes," a syncretistic deity who combines aspects of the Greek god Hermes and the Egyptian god Thoth . Hermeticism is also associated with alchemy . These beliefs were influential in European occult lore, especially from the Renaissance forward, when they were revived by people like Giordano Bruno and Marsilio Ficino .
