The principal tenet is "as above, so below", in other words everything that is in heaven is in some way reflected in what happens on the earth and vice versa. It also involves a development of the Greek Theory of four elements: (earth, air, fire, water), and leads naturally into the development of Alchemy. Hermeticism has become the Western Esoteric Tradition, a System of Mysticism. It is a foundation for many other systems such as Alchemy, Rosicrucianism, Golden Dawn, etc. It shares its knowledge with other traditions. It started in Egypt and Greece with a few documents, such as the Emerald Tablet, but is now a large body of knowledge. The Western Mystical Tradition is based on Hermeticism, even Rosicrucianism is based on it. Some of the other pages could have been included under Rosicrucianism, but for this study, the pages are more appropriate to be included with Hermeticism. In these studies it is the major subject, other sub-divisions become minor, but important. Subjects like actuality/reality, etc. are more appropriate with the study of Rosicrucianism. As you progress in your study of the Hermeticism Page, you may read the other fourteen pages in the order they are listed. Start out by studying Hermeticism alone for awhile, and then you may gradually add the other pages. Its peculiar concept of spiritual rebirth, for instance in Libellus II, The Basin , contains Persian, Greek and Egyptian Gnostic features interwoven in an early universalism characteristic of the cosmopolitanism of the Hellenistic Age. Its exhortation to spiritual refinement is noble. Extractions: End of Europe's Middle Ages Hermeticism There were three major components to hermeticism that were especially important to scholars in the late Middle Ages and Renaissance: alchemy, numerology and the magic of letters (cryptography and ciphers). Alchemy was the art, or science, of corporeal substance, combination and mixture. It sought to transmute base metals, such as lead, to precious metals, such as gold, by reducing a base metal to prime matter and reconstructing it into gold. A second aspect of alchemy was the quest for the recipe for the magical elixir, or "Philosopher's Stone", that was believed to be able to permeate base metals and in this way transform them into gold. To facilitate their efforts, alchemists developed many of the procedures and apparatus that is now used in modern chemical laboratories. Letters, especially the letters of the Hebrew alphabet, were believed to have magical powers when arranged in certain combinations. The Cabbala was the mystical interpretation of the Hebraic Old Testament. Breaking the code of the Bible would, according to tradition, reveal all the secrets of the universe. Many hermeticists applied themselves to this goal and attempted to reinterpret the Bible using ciphers. The study of numbers and ratios were yet another aspect of hermetic study. Just as letters and combinations of letters were seen to have mystical powers, so too did numbers. The study of numbers made an impact upon many other areas of scientific study, such as astronomy and mathematics, as well as areas that would not be considered scientific by modern definitions, such as astrology and numerology.

In 30 b.c.e , the last of the Ptolemeans, Cleopatra, was defeated by the Romans who, since 300 b.c.e, had grown powerfull and fought the Greco-Egyptian power for domination of the Eastern Mediterranean.
