This common ground exists because ethics are more than social conventions, manners, or customs. The ethical teachings of the world's great religions, discovered through centuries of pain and progress, define the conditions necessary for human beings to thrive individually and collectively. For a good life, love must prevail, truth must be respected, honesty esteemed, freedom protected, and justice secured. Deed Before Creed - Ethical Culturists place their faith in the capacity for good in the human spirit and in the yearning for good they personally experience within themselves. Ethical Societies do not ask whether you believe in God, because membership is not based on worship of a deity, on ritual, or on creed. Members must decide for themselves what they believe about philosophic and religious teachings and about what rituals are meaningful to them or need to be created anew. As humanists, of course, we face the same awesome questions of existence as everyone else, but we look for answers to our own experiences and those of other people both of the present and the past rather than to the supernatural. We do not ask whether you believe in God; our concern is with ethical actions for their own value, not because of a belief in a deity. Our purpose is to develop ethical values in a caring community. A human being is an evolving creature - the only animal with the potential for ethical growth. Recognizing a person's inherent capacity to make choices, we think people are responsible for their own lives, even when the alternatives seem few. In our view, we can each grow in our ability to choose good over evil and we broadly define good as that which encourages people's growth and development; evil as that which belittles or destroys. In the PALI, there is no Bad KAMMA from Deeds of Omission, no matter how compelling, or no matter how much the culture of the times might dictate the opposite. Acts are produced by an individual through three modes: Imagining , or mental wishing or willing.

T hree great issues have been before the American people within the last twelve months. The first was whether this nation should put an end to Spanish oppression in Cuba and set the island free. The second was whether, having broken the Spanish power in the Philippines, the nation should thereafter return the islands to Spain or turn them over to some other Power or leave them to themselves, in any case washing its own hands of them; or whether it should assume some manner of responsibility for them. The third issue is now before us. We have freed Cuba; we have accepted responsibility for the Philippines and the question now is, how shall we discharge that responsibility, in what spirit shall we act, do we really wish to own the Philippines or do we wish to make them free? Each one of these issues has tried, or is trying, keenly the temper of the people. Some thought in the first place that Cuba was no concern of ours abhorred the war altogether. Later, many believed that we should do anything rather than charge ourselves with the Philippines some, like Prof. Norton, even advocating leaving them to Spain. But the main body of the people was moved in both instances by humaner, more generous thoughts. The nation has acted on the assumption that we were our brother's keeper and even to islands in distant seas we have stretched out the friendly hand. The nation has assumed responsibility and has even agreed to pay Spain $20,000,000 for a quitclaim deed to the islands. From a legal point of view the Philippines are in our hands.
