The Church of England split from what is now the Roman Catholic church centuries ago and became the established state church in England. The ruling body of the Church is its General Synod. The Church has an unusual voting arrangement. Resolutions have to be passed by all three " houses " within the synod: one composed solely of bishops, another of the clergy and a third of the laity. The Church of England , like the affiliated faith groups which form the world-wide Anglican Communion, have prided themselves in the broadness of belief among its members. Some are near Roman Catholic in belief and practice; others are virtually indistinguishable from the conservative wing of Protestantism Fundamentalists and other Evangelicals; others are quite liberal; the majority follows mainstream Christianity. The Church of England is the officially established church of England Although Christians were present in England since the fourth century or earlier, the Church of England traces its roots to Augustine of Canterbury , the first Archbishop of Canterbury , in the seventh century. The English Church was under the jurisdiction of Rome until the reign of Henry VIII . The break with Rome came when Pope Clement VII refused to annul Henry's marriage to Catherine of Aragon . Henry turned to Thomas Cranmer , Archbishop of Canterbury, for his annulment, and upon procuring it, married Anne Boleyn . Henry VIII was excommunicated by Pope Clement VII in Henry VIII was recognized as supreme head of the Church of England on February 11 Making himself the head of the church not only made it possible for Henry to divorce but also gave him access to the considerable wealth that the Church had amassed. THE EPISCOPAL SUCCESSION OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND The documents given here are an attempt to chart the course of the Episcopal succession as it has been preserved in the Church of England. The 'successio sedis' or succession of Bishops in their dioceses has of course been published many times and is a matter of general knowledge (it is published, for example, in most editions of Crockford's Clerical Directory); this study however gives the 'successio manuum' or succession of consecrators, which I believe has nowhere before been set out in this form. The unbroken list of definite and historically verifiable consecrations begins in the ninth century. Before that date it is rare to find any record of a bishop's consecrator - contemporary documents, where they exist, may record only the bare fact that the consecration has taken place. This does not of course mean that there was no consecrator. Episcopal consecrations being major public events it is unthinkable that the rite could have ever been performed except by someone universally known to be competent to do so, that is, by a lawfully and validly ordained bishop; and, notwithstanding the occasional bishop who was elected but never consecrated, it is equally unthinkable that anyone could have embarked upon the actual exercise of episcopal orders without being known to have received them.

It was formed in 1994, following the Church of England's Measure to allow the ordination of 'women-priests'and developed from the (much older) Movement for a Continuing Church of England,founded by Fr.L.J. Whiting, who was consecrated the first Bishop of the TCE in December 1995. The TCE exists to continue the witness of Classic Anglicanism and provides a spiritual home for any who wish to remain true to their faith and heritage but cannot, in conscience, do so within the Established Church. The TCE is an independent Church within the Continuing Church movement and its clergy and lay people are all former communicants of the Church of England. The worship of the TCE is according to the Book of Common Prayer. It has a sister Church, TCE(Australia), under the leadership of the Vicar General(Fr.John Keep). The TCE is also in communion with other Continuing Churches in the United States and India.

I have been asked to speak on the theme of "Church and The State", and frequently when this combination is mentioned, the words of Jesus, "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that God's", are quoted. At first sight this would seen to be a divinely authoritative prescription for the division of powers, leaving the politician to get on with politics and the religious to get on with religion. By so doing the one would not step on the toes of the other. But that conveniently ignores the fact that the cleverest part of Jesus' answer to the question, "Is it lawful to pay tribute to Caesar or not?" lay in his request, "Show me a penny". His questioners' ability to produce one was evidence that they were already involved in Caesar's world. It was a sign that they, like all of us, were inevitably mixed up in it and often compromised by it. Of course we have to render to Caesar the things that are his, because, like it or not, we are part of Caesar's world. But it is only when this is understood that Jesus' punch line becomes significant, "Render to God the things that are God's".

The Free Church of England has its origin within Ecclesia Anglicana, while the implicit Common Law Trust dates from 1844, and the civil constitution was registered with the Court of Chancery on August 31st, 1863. The Free Church of England arose due to the Dr Philpotts, Bishop of Exeter withdrawing the licence of the Revd James Shore, a successful evangelical curate of ten years standing in Bridgetown. Dr Philpotts declined to give any explanation. The Duke of Somerset who had recently built a new church for his tenants tried for six months to get an explanation or conciliation, but got neither. The Duke then consented to the wish of his tenants to allow the Church to open outside the established Church this was done on April 14th, 1844. Dr Philpotts was the Tractarian, whose inquisitorial examination and rejection of an eminent evangelical scholar for a living in his diocese, led to the famouse Gorham case. After being over-ruled by the Archbishop of Canterbury on that occasion, Dr Philpotts declared himself to be out of communion with the Archbishop.
