Extractions: Cornfield, Illinois Sunday noon lunch was interrupted when a visiting stranger sat at the u-shaped table traditionally reserved for bishops, deacons and other ministering brothers. The officiating bishopric redirected the visitor to a more informal table among the congregation. Witnesses said the visitor was embarrassed and so humiliated they sort of wobbled away with rubber-like legs toward the front end of the dining room. No one seemed to watch after the stranger walked into the foyer between the dining area and sanctuary. However, sister Mary Mckinsey said she saw an unfamiliar person leave the grounds shortly after the incident. "I was two seats away and couldn't believe someone would just go and sit right on the bishopric's stool," said deacon brother Gilbert Redding. "Why would anyone presume to act on their own initiative and just sit at the most convenient place?" A minister who wished to remain anonymous for fear of reprisal said, "Well, after morning service everyone was invited to join in noon lunch by the Bishopric. We cannot expect a visitor to know all our seating traditions like gender separation, separation by age, as well as status and popularity positioning. But I have to admit it was strange that the visitor left just because there were no empty places. We do have a second seating!"

Extractions: Weds., May 12, 1999 Who We Are HTML 3.2 Home ACORN About the Apostolic Christian Church (Nazarean) The Apostolic Christian Church (Nazarean) frequently referred to as the ACC is a denomination which teaches that the grace of GOD has been made available to all men through the shed blood of Jesus Christ, His Son; that the only way to fellowship with GOD the Father is through absolute confidence that Jesus paid the penalty for our sin by shedding His blood at Calvary, and obedience to His will as revealed by His Holy Spirit. While we believe and teach that those who have this faith gladly do good things for their fellowmen, we absolutely reject any notion that the good deeds men do can in any way pay for their salvation. Because we hold such 'old fashioned' views as the inherently sinful nature of man and his need to be reborn "not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of GOD" we, like numerous other 'evangelical' denominations, trace our roots back to the congregations established by the original Apostles of Jesus. Just as most denominations began as small fellowships of believers keeping a tradition of worship, so our denomination began in the early 1800's in Switzerland. There a young preacher named Samuel H. Froehlich came to understand that despite the fact that he had been baptized as a baby in the Protestant state church and was a trained theologian, he was separated from fellowship with GOD because of his sinful human nature. Searching the Bible anew, he realized that the reason Jesus had died was to pay for Sam Froehlich's personal misdeeds, and when he accepted this salvation, he was reborn by the Holy Spirit of GOD. Froehlich began to preach the gospel of redemption through faith in the shed blood of Jesus and the need to be born again, and was soon excommunicated from the national church.

Extractions: Apostolic Christian Church History In the years between 1868 and 1890, a number of families of the Apostolic Christian faith came to the community of West Bend, where some of them received Patent Land Grants from the U.S. Government on unbroken prairie land. Some came by covered wagon, drawn by oxen, and horses from Elgin, Iowa. Others come from various places, including Ohio, Illinois and some from Switzerland. No tree grew except along rivers and streams, but prairie grass was everywhere, some as tall as a boy on horseback! Some of the families lived in log cabins, others in sod houses made by staking squares of sod for walls. The roofs were made of small willow limbs tied together with prairie grass, until they were about a foot in thickness. The floors were dirt, perhaps in very rare instances an animal skin for a rug, and open fireplaces were used for cooking and also provided warmth. Trips to town were not frequent as "town" was Fort Dodge, 45 miles away. These trips were made by a group of men and took several days. They brought mail, sugar, and flour made from wheat which they had taken with them to be ground at the mills. Indians were numerous, but most of them were friendly if not disturbed when helping themselves to corn from the white mens supply or when crossing open prairie. No doctors being available, some of these sturdy pioneers out of love and care for each other took the responsibility of administering first aid, and caring for the sick and dying with the simple medicines which they kept on hand. Another of the many labors of love was preparing bodies of their own dear ones for burial. Some were buried in plots near their homes and some in the cemetery in Garfield Township, Section 8 before 1896, when the present private cemetery was used, the first burial being that of a 13 year old boy, Peter A. Banwart in 1887.

Extractions: (German Language) My interest in the genealogy of the Apostolic Christian families stems from my research of the Strahm and Gerber families which immigrated from Langnau i.E., Switzerland in 1851 and settled in in Adams and Wells Counties, Indiana about 1853. These families were involved in the early beginnings of the Apostolic Christian Church one mile north of Vera Cruz, Indiana (referred to as the Bluffton or Bluffton East Apostolic Christian Church). By church doctrine, members of the church must marry other members. There is also a tendency for "friends of the church" (attending nonmembers) to marry other "friends." Because the early Apostolic Christian Churches started with only a few families (usually Swiss or German Anabaptist immigrants), relatively few other families have come into the churches, and the marriage tendencies mentioned above, the genealogies of the original families become very intertwined. As communication between the churches have improved with the general improvements in transportation since the early 1900s, and as members have seen the need to marry outside of their extended families (but still within the church, of course), many marriages have occurred between members of different congregations. These marriages have created many ties between the original families of each of the congregations.
