Lutheran Renewal Sensing a profound change in the way churches are called to related to one another, the alliance of Renewal churches (ARC) was formed at our Inaugural http://www.lutheranrenewal.org/arc.html
Extractions: In the past, Lutherans formally associated within denominational structures. There was a bureaucracy with commissions and committees, and its constitution and bylaws were the product of past mergers of Lutheran bodies with all their historical concerns and compromises. Missions, publications, and curriculum were directed by the centralized offices. These structures have proved less than optimal at serving their member churches during an unprecedented time of change. The Present Need Churches today face the increasingly challenging task of communicating the love of Christ in a manner that meaningfully addresses the culture in which we live and brings the life of Jesus to the lost, few of whom connect with traditional church culture. Moreover, as the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit increases, the manner in which ministry has been done in the past is also fundamentally changing. A Preferable Future

That Jesus Christ, true God and true Man, through His virgin birth, sinless life, sacrificial death on our behalf, and resurrection from the dead, offers eternal life to all who believe. That we are justified by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, and that the same grace that saves also empowers for victorious living.

Most live and witness in the two-thirds world, many are religious minorities seeking to spread the good news of Jesus Christ through the Reformed understanding of grace, faith and scripture. In Europe there are 39 memberchurches in 27 countries. WARC is an interdependent network of people and churches living, working and worshipping together with faith in God's promise always to be with us. The gifts and talents of many peoples and cultures make the Alliance a dynamic international community. Objectives The WARC promotes: Projects The Alliance has for many years helped to put theological students from its member churches who wish to study overseas in touch with theological faculties and seminaries which participate in the WARC scholarship programme. Information may be obtained from your member church. WARC has a long history of commitment to human rights and concern for the all too frequent persecution of small churches as they witness, often in isolation, to the Gospel. In 1877, the Alliance protested the treatment of native Americans in the United States. In 1987, it was the first ecumenical organization openly to protest human rights violations by the Romanian government. In recent years WARC has been involved in the process of democratization in Malawi, South Africa and elsewhere.

The Reformed representatives came from Brazil, the Czech Republic, Germany, Ghana, Italy, Korea, Lebanon, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland and the USA. The São Paulo meeting was the last in a series of five sessions of international Pentecostal-Reformed dialogue. The first took place in 1996 in Torre Pellice, Italy, with the theme "Spirituality and the challenges of today". The second, held in Chicago in 1997, dealt with "The role and place of the Holy Spirit in the church". The third session, in Kappel, Switzerland in 1998, discussed "The Holy Spirit and mission in eschatological perspective". The fourth session which was held in Seoul in 1999, with the theme "The Holy Spirit, charismata [gifts], and the kingdom of God". The fifth session in São Paulo centred on "The Holy Spirit in church and world", and tried to summarize and evaluate the findings of the previous sessions and to indicate points of agreement as well as points needing further exploration.

Extractions: Press Release May 15, 1997 The World Alliance of Reformed Churches (WARC) and members from several different branches of the Pentecostal Movement met in Chicago, Illinois. Meeting at McCormick Theological Seminary, the session was the second in a five year International Reformed-Pentecostal Dialogue. Convened by H.S. Wilson (WARC - Geneva, Switzerland) and Cecil M. Robeck (Pentecostal - Pasadena, CA, USA.), the meeting took place from May 11-15, 1997. This dialogue seeks to (1) increase mutual understanding and respect, (2) identify areas of theological agreement, convergence or disagreement, and (3) explore possibilities for common witness. The theme for the meeting was "The Role and Place of the Holy Spirit in the Church." Jan Veenhof (Reformed - Switzerland) presented a paper on "The Relation of the Holy Spirit to the Bible." Cephas Omenyo (Reformed - Ghana) and Wonsuk Ma and Julie Ma (Pentecostal - Philippines) made presentations on the role of the Spirit in proclamation and manifestations of the charismata within the Church. Ensuing dialogue included discussion of the Spirit's role in revelation and continuing revelation. Both groups found commonality in God's revelation of Jesus Christ as witnessed to in the Scripture while struggling to understand the implications of ongoing revelation for faith and practice. As Pentecostals and Reformed Christians, the groups affirmed that the Good News of Jesus Christ is received through the community of the faithful. The community furthers the message and mission of God rooted in the Word of God and guided by the Holy Spirit. The members of the community offer their eyes, ears, mouths and hands to God and are sustained and nurtured by the Spirit and the Word. Furthermore, it is the Spirit who sovereignly bestows charisms upon the faith community as it seeks to address the diverse needs which arise in the Church, society and the world.
Extractions: on the proposed war on Iraq Amman, Jordan, February 21: Following a team visit to Baghdad, Rev. Dr Setri Nyomi, General Secretary of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches today issued the following statement opposing the war on Iraq that is being planned by the US administration and its close allies in the UK and elsewhere. The World Alliance of Reformed Churches delegation has just returned from a pastoral visit to Iraq. We felt the pain of the people of Iraq, and saw the devastation caused by the wars they have been through and the sanctions still in place. Everything points to the senselessness and callousness of war at this time. The victims will be poor innocent civilians of Iraq and the region. Daily and from every corner of the earth, the Alliance receives statements from its member churches expressing opposition to war on Iraq. Reformed churches including those in the United States of America and the United Kingdom are against it. Nor are we alone. Churches and Christians of every tradition stand together in their opposition to this war. The World Alliance of Reformed Churches endorses and identifies with the united voice of international Christian opinion.

Extractions: Duke Divinity School creates alliance with 15 churches Jan. 9, 2002 News media contact: Tim Tanton Nashville, Tenn. By David Reid* DURHAM, N.C. (UMNS) Duke University Divinity School will team with congregations from 15 churches across the country as part of a larger program to develop a new generation of effective pastors. The churches, which stretch from San Antonio to Greenwich, Conn., were chosen for their strong pastoral leadership and vital congregational ministries, said Dean L. Gregory Jones, who announced the initiative Jan. 9. "We believe these partnerships will make a crucial difference in how congregations conceive of their ministry, how excellent students begin to develop a vision for ministerial identity and leadership, and how Duke faculty and staff deploy their resources for the church in more integrated ways," Jones said. "We look forward to working closely with these congregations." Nine of the churches are United Methodist. Duke Divinity School is affiliated with the United Methodist Church, though its 475 enrolled students represent 40 different denominations.
