Editorial Review Product Description Exploring the growing relevance of wavelets in the field of mathematics, Wavelet Theory: An Elementary Approach with Applications provides an introduction to the topic, detailing the fundamental concepts and presenting its major impacts in the world beyond academia. Drawing on concepts from calculus and linear algebra, this book helps readers sharpen their mathematical proof writing and reading skills through interesting, real-world applications. The book begins with a brief introduction to the fundamentals of complex numbers and the space of square-integrable functions. Next, Fourier series and the Fourier transform are presented as tools for understanding wavelet analysis and the study of wavelets in the transform domain. Subsequent chapters provide a comprehensive treatment of various types of wavelets and their related concepts, such as Haar spaces, multiresolution analysis, Daubechies wavelets, and biorthogonal wavelets. In addition, the authors include two chapters that carefully detail the transition from wavelet theory to the discrete wavelet transformations. To illustrate the relevance of wavelet theory in the digital age, the book includes two in-depth sections on current applications: the FBI Wavelet Scalar Quantization Standard and image segmentation. In order to facilitate mastery of the content, the book features more than 400 exercises that range from theoretical to computational in nature and are structured in a multi-part format in order to assist readers with the correct proof or solution. These problems provide an opportunity for readers to further investigate various applications of wavelets. All problems are compatible with software packages and computer labs that are available on the book's related Web site, allowing readers to perform various imaging/audio tasks, explore computer wavelet transformations and their inverses, and visualize the applications discussed throughout the book. Requiring only a prerequisite knowledge of linear algebra and calculus, Wavelet Theory is an excellent book for courses in mathematics, engineering, and physics at the upper-undergraduate level. It is also a valuable resource for mathematicians, engineers, and scientists who wish to learn about wavelet theory on an elementary level. |

Editorial Review Product Description Essential Wavelets for Statistical Applications and Data Analysis presents an accesible, introductory survey for new wavelet analysis tools and how they can be applied to fundamental data analysis problems. A variety of problems in statistics are discussed in a non-theoretical style, with an emphasis on understanding of wavelet methods. The only technical prerequisite is basic knowledge of undergraduate calculus, linear algebra, and basic statistical theory. Features:* Accesible, clearly presented background material provided in chapters two, three, and the appendix* Plenty of examples thoughout the book to illustrate step-by-step how the methods work* A variety of statistical application topics, such as non-parametric regression, density estimation, time series spectrial estimation, and change-point problems* A clear, intuitive style of presentation, with mathematics kept to a minimum. Emphasis on the application and understanding of wavelet methods. The book is ideal for a broad audience which includes advanced students, graduates, and professionals in statistics. All scientists and engineers who use data analysis methods will also find the book accesible and understandable for learning about new wavelet methods and their applications in statistics. list price: US$59.95 -- used & new: US$48.31 (price subject to change: see help) Asin: 0817681108 Average Customer Review: Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France | Japan | |
Editorial Review Product Description This volume is designed as a textbook for an introductory course on wavelet analysis and time-frequency analysis aimed at graduate students or advanced undergraduates in science and engineering. It can also be used as a self-study or reference book by practicing researchers in signal analysis and related areas. Since the expected audience is not presumed to have a high level of mathematical background, much of the needed analytical machinery is developed from the beginning. The only prerequisites for the first eight chapters are matrix theory, Fourier series, and Fourier integral transforms. Each of these chapters ends with a set of straightforward exercises designed to drive home the concepts just covered, and the many graphics should further facilitate absorption. Customer Reviews (9)

Editorial Review Product Description This distinctly accessible introduction to wavelets provides computer graphics professionals and researchers with the mathematical foundations for understanding and applying this powerful tool. Wavelets are rapidly becoming a core technique in computer graphics, with applications for Stressing intuition and clarity, this book offers a solid understanding of the theory of wavelets and their proven applications in computer graphics. Although previous introductions to wavelets have presented an elegant mathematical framework, that framework is too restrictive to apply to many problems in graphics. In contrast, this book focuses on a generalized theory that naturally accommodates the kinds of objects that commonly arise in computer graphics, including images, open curves, and surfaces of arbitrary topology. This book also contains a foreword by Ingrid Daubechies and an appendix covering the necessary background material in linear algebra. Customer Reviews (5)

Heavy on group theory and math
Great Book Then I came upon this book. It was fantastic. The presentation of the subject in linear algebra terms was novel and was just what I was looking for. The presentation was crisp, concise and easy to understand. The problems presented in the text were placed after main ideas were presented rather than at the end of the chapter. And, many of the problems were designed to be a continuation of the text itself. A great approach. After studying the subject as it was presented, I was able to read through the classics with a better understanding and appreciation of the subject. In short, this is a wonderful book and I highly recommend it.
More like "Lecture Notes on Wavelets" My advice is buy another book.
Discovering Wavelets
Good Practical Introduction The shortcomings of thebook are in what it lacks. It does not cover the relationship betweenFourier analysis and wavelets, or how to apply the many different types ofwavelets (other than Haar or Daubechies) to particular problems. Theprogramming language used was Maple. I would have preferred pseudo code orC. The application of wavelets to images was somewhat limited. Inconclusion I would say this book is excellent as a stepping stone to othermore advanced books on wavelets. It will not answer all of your waveletquestions, but it will significantly lessen the learning curve for thebooks that will. ... Read more |

A great reference book. Although this is volume 10 in the "Wavelet Analysis and its Applications" series by Academic Press, don't be misled into thinking that this a book on wavelets alone. If you want a wavelet book I recommend the "Wavelets and Subband Coding" by Martin Vetterli and Jelena Kovacevic. (From the cover) "This book offers a discussion of problems that emerge from a mixed description in time and frequency, and it comprises a detailed construction of the principle classes of admissible solutions (short-time Fourier, wavelets, Wigner-Ville, Cohen's class, affine distributions, etc.)It also addresses numerous issues of interpretation related to such representations and shows how to reformulate several important problems in signal theory by utilizing time-frequency distributions." A bonus for researchers is that although it not mentioned in the book, Flandrin has a public domain set of Matlab routines to compute many of the techniques described in the book. Finally, an indication of the scope and thoroughness of the book is that it concludes with a 20 page bibliography. This book makes a nice companion to the book "Time-Frequency Analysis" by Leon Cohen.Although there is a good deal of overlap in the material they are different enough to warrant owning both. Highly recommended. ... Read more |
