Editorial Review Product Description This book presents a comprehensive and systematic analysis of problems of transversely isotropic materials that have wide applications in civil, mechanical, aerospace, materials processing and manufacturing engineering. Various efficient methods based on three-dimensional elasticity are developed under a unified framework, including the displacement method, the stress method, and the state-space method. In particular, a three-dimensional general solution is derived to solve practical problems such as the infinite space, half-space, bimaterial space, layered medium, bodies of revolution, thermal stresses and three-dimensional contact. Exact and analytical solutions are also developed for static and dynamic problems of plates and shells, which may be used as the benchmarks for numerical or approximate analysis. Coupling effects of inner/outer fluids and surrounding elastic media on the free vibration of cylindrical and spherical shells are discussed in detail. New state-space formulations are established for the analysis of rectangular plates and spherical shells, from which two independent classes of vibrations can be easily clarified. In short, this is the first monograph on machines of transversely isotropic materials, which is unique, covers topics of practical importance and provides many references for the reader. |

Expensive, but useful book A lot of the material covered in this book has since been updated, often by the same authors. This book is definetely useful for graduate students and researchers. Chances are you'll be charging this book to a project or a company account, so its worth the price. It's a bit too expensive for a personal library. ... Read more |
89. Variational and Quasi-Variational Inequalities in Mechanics (Solid Mechanics and Its Applications) by Alexander S. Kravchuk, Pekka J. Neittaanmäki | |

Editorial Review Product Description The essential aim of this book is to consider a wide set of problems arising in the mathematical modeling of mechanical systems under unilateral constraints. In these investigations elastic and non-elastic deformations, friction and adhesion phenomena are taken into account. All the necessary mathematical tools are given: local boundary value problem formulations, construction of variational equations and inequalities and their transition to minimization problems, existence and uniqueness theorems, and variational transformations (Friedrichs and Young-Fenchel-Moreau) to dual and saddle-point search problems. |

Editorial Review Product Description This textbook aims to be the bridge between plate theory and FE-software. Structural engineers must translate elastic analysis results into economic structure dimensions and reinforcement, which raises difficulties. Not all engineers are well enough equipped for the increasingly easy-to-use powerful programs. The problem is not lack of FE-knowledge, but rather ignorance of plate behaviour. Therefore, the book starts with classical plate theory for membrane and bending states, and proceeds to FE-practice. The text can be used for university courses, acts as practical preparation for the engineering profession, and as a guide to structural designers. |
