Product Description

This book contains the edited papers of the IUTAM Symposium on the Biomechanics of Impact, which was held in University College Dublin, Ireland in July 2005. These papers can be grouped into those that are concerned with the different causes of accidents (e.g., transport, occupational and sports injuries), the mechanics involved in accident analysis (e.g., accident investigation, computational modelling techniques), the different types of resulting traumatic injuries (including musculoskeletal, organ, spinal and head injuries), methods of assessing the extent of injury (e.g., injury assessment, injury criteria, constitutive laws for human tissue), and providing protection during an impact (e.g., injury prevention, energy absorption materials, and safety devices). Researchers active in the area of biomechanics will find the book very useful in addressing recent developments in these areas.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good book if you read it through...
This book by Paul Shewmon is very good and thorough. However, it is frustrating to use if you just want to read certain sections and pick up small parts here and there. There seemed to always be some variables which were defined elsewhere in the book and never mentioned again!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good one for both students and researchers
The first chapter deals with the basic equations of diffusion; the second chapter widely describes the atomic theory of diffusion before, in the subsequent chapters, focusing on diffusion in dilute alloys, in a concentration gradient, in non-metals. The 6th chapter is really interesting as it focuses on the effect of dislocations, grain boundaries and free surfaces on diffusion and even including, in the last chapter, diffusion mechanisms under electric current or heat flux.
All the chapters are independent of one another.

In almost all chapters the author describes both theory and experimental measurements (including some results) and then discusses the results with some left open questions.
A set of problems is included at the end of each chapter with the answers for many of them. ... Read more

Product Description
The first objective of this introductory text is to familiarize students who have been exposed to only one course on fluids with the basic elements of fluid mechanics so that, in the event that their future work relies on occasional numerical solutions, they will be familiar with the jargon of the discipline and the expected results. At the same time, this book can serve as a long-term reference text, contrary to the oversimplified approach occasionally used for such introductory courses. The second objective is to provide a comprehensive foundation for more advanced courses in fluid mechanics (within disciplines such as mechanical or aerospace engineering). In order to avoid confusing the students, the governing equations are introduced early, and the assumptions leading to the various models are clearly presented. This provides a logical hierarchy and explains the interconnectivity between the various models. Supporting examples demonstrate the principles and provide engineering analysis tools for many engineering calculations. ... Read more

Product Description
Shell structures are used in all phases of structures, fromspace vehicles to deep submergence hulls, from nuclear reactors todomes on sport arenas and civic buildings. With new materials andmanufacturing methods, curved thin walled structures are being usedincreasingly.
This text is a graduate course in the theory of shells. It coversshells of isotropic materials, such as metal alloys and plastics, andshells of composite materials, such as fibre reinforced polymer, metalor ceramic matrix materials. It provides the essential information foran understanding of the underlying theory, and solution of some of thebasic problems. It also provides a basis to study the voluminous shellliterature. Beyond being primarily a textbook, it is intended also forself study by practising engineers who would like to learn more aboutthe behaviour of shells.
The book has two parts: Part I deals with shells of isotropicmaterials. In this part the mathematical formulations are introducedinvolving curvilinear coordinates. The techniques of solutions andresulting behavior is compared to planar thin walled isotropicstructures such as plates and beams.
Part II then treats the behavior of shells, involving anisotropiccomposite materials, so widely used today. The analysis involves thecomplications due to the many elastic constants, effects of transverseshear deformation, thermal thickening and offer effects arising fromthe properties of composite materials. ... This book is not worth buying. If you buy it, get the next edition. It has more examples, less errors on important equations and procedures.Honestly I am considering trashing this and buying the next one because it is that much better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Engineering Mechanics of Composite Materials
The book Engineering Mechanics of Composite Materials by Isaac M. Daniel and Ori Ishai is probably one of the best introduction books for composite analysis. I own several books in composites and so far this is the book I believe is most intuitive. I used this book as undergraduate and I continue to use it today. The book is easy to follow and for the most part provides with the formulation of most of the equations cover in the book. The only thing it lacks is a section in tensor analysis to help students understand stress and strain transformation via linear algebra. Over all I would recommend this text to anyone interested in learning the basics laminated composite analysis.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book to start the study on composites
This book is really friendly for a novice in composites. It contains a lot of theoretical and experimental data, solved problems and problems for the reader to solve and also lots of enlightening illustrations and figures. Chapters 7 and 8 nicely cover stress and failure analysis and characterization and testing subjects. Overall a very good book and up to date.

This monograph, first published in Russian, presents a new efficient tool of computational mechanics, complex variable boundary integral equations (CV-BIE). The book is conceived as a continuation of the classical monograph by N.I. Muskhelishvili into the computer era. The English edition places more emphasis on problems relating to media with internal structure; it contains more examples showing the potential and advantages of the analysis.

The book may be of use to those who want to calculate stresses, strains, stress intensity factors and effective properties of a medium with internal structure when dealing with problems of materials science, fracture mechanics, micromechanics, soil and rock mechanics, geomechanics, civil and mechanical engineering. It may also serve as a textbook for graduate students on the theory of real potentials, on the CV-BIE and on the CV-BEM.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Buy and Good Price!
Found the same book I needed on Amazon for half off again. Nothing beats that. Seriously use this site before buying from your school store.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sterile
I could not follow the examples or the chapter explanations.I felt as though Beer and Johnson do not want me to understand the basic concepts.I would spend hours on a few problems and understand about half the material.I would buy Lindeburg books on fundamentals of engineering.Do not buy this book even if it is assigned to the class. Most of your classmates or going to work together on homework problems and never open the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Deal!!!
I have to say that I was worried I was not getting the right book becuase of the price it was. But after I got it, it was exaclty what I needed and for a price that couldn't have been better. The book was not new, however it is in good shape. Thanks!

4-0 out of 5 stars Statics Hater
The time you put into this book equals what you will get out of it. The book gave examples of the fundamentals of the section subject but never went into detail on the more difficult problems (in the sections), which was sometimes difficult bridging the gap.

This book is set up different then any other civil engineering book that I have used during my college career, learn a section and then do problems on that material. This helped me understand where the problem comes from.

Have fun!!!

P.S.
I hated statics when I didn't understand it, but as soon as I understood the fundamentals of this subject I love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vector Mechanics
I have been looking for a book that could have both the statics and dynamics part for my engineering subject mechanics and I came to know that the book "Vector Mechanics" by Beer & Johnson was the right option for it. This book has everything from the elementary level topics to that of the engineering level concepts. The illustrative examples were interesting but the authors could have represented some real time pictures along with the text so that it could have been better to intercept the concepts. The exercise problems, 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional representations were quite interesting. It would have been more helpful if the solution for the unsolved problems were given or at least a resource could have been mentioned so that the students could find it easier to solve problems and gain more knowledge. Moment of inertia, friction topics were explained in a nice way to be understood, the formulas could have been summarised at the end of each topic make it easier to remember once you go through the book for some reference purpose.
The first two topics were unnecessary since it repeated the same ideas and concepts what everyone would have learnt in their primary education. Instead of the first two topics the evolution of the mechanics concepts and the developers of those ideas could have been mentioned. The dynamics section was not well explained as the mechanics section was made. The overall way of expressing the ideas and concepts was good and this book is suitable only for people who are in their college level because it requires the readers to have a broad knowledge about the basic concepts. The last pages explained some of the space science concepts related with mechanics and it was expressed in a nice way than anyone could imagine. I recommend anyone who is willing to study mechanics and dynamics to study in detail to read this book. ... Read more

Product Description

The authors and their colleagues developed this text over many years, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in structural analysis courses at the Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering of the Georgia Institute of Technology.

The emphasis is on clarity and unity in the presentation of basic structural analysis concepts and methods. The equations of linear elasticity and basic constitutive behaviour of isotropic and composite materials are reviewed. The text focuses on the analysis of practical structural components including bars, beams and plates. Particular attention is devoted to the analysis of thin-walled beams under bending shearing and torsion. Advanced topics such as warping, non-uniform torsion, shear deformations, thermal effect and plastic deformations are addressed. A unified treatment of work and energy principles is provided that naturally leads to an examination of approximate analysis methods including an introduction to matrix and finite element methods.

This teaching tool based on practical situations and thorough methodology should prove valuable to both lecturers and students of structural analysis in engineering worldwide.

This is a textbook for teaching structural analysis of aerospace structures. It can be used for 3rd and 4th year students in aerospace engineering, as well as for 1st and 2nd year graduate students in aerospace and mechanical engineering.

Product Description
This definitive introduction to finite element methods has been thoroughly updated for a third edition which features important new material for both research and application of the finite element method. The discussion of saddle-point problems is a highlight of the book and has been elaborated to include many more nonstandard applications. The chapter on applications in elasticity now contains a complete discussion of locking phenomena. The numerical solution of elliptic partial differential equations is an important application of finite elements and the author discusses this subject comprehensively. These equations are treated as variational problems for which the Sobolev spaces are the right framework. Graduate students who do not necessarily have any particular background in differential equations, but require an introduction to finite element methods will find this text invaluable. Specifically, the chapter on finite elements in solid mechanics provides a bridge between mathematics and engineering. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A decent introduction to theory and methods for FEM
I would say I mostly agree with the previous reviewer. The description is pretty clear, despite being a translation, and it has actually proven useful to me during my time in grad school. One minor complaint I have is that some of the proofs he gives are not as clear as I would like them to be.Specifically, I am talking about the sections dealing with the INF-SUP condition. It seems that everyone who writes an FEM book either skirts this whole issue of the INF-SUP condition (which is what a lot of engineering texts do), or they just copy the 'standard' proofs, which suck. But other than that, this is a useful book to have.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Book To Learn Finite Elements From
I recently read this book as part of an advanced numerical analysis class in grad school.I found it to be well written and easy to read.It was useful to me in learning about finite elements from both an abstract and practical perspective.I would recommend it to anyone familiar with the concept of a weak solution to an elliptic partial differential equation and with some experience with numerical linear algebra.
This book could have been improved by including some code or pseudo-code to help get novices started. This is not too severe of a drawback since the text is so well written that the reader should be able to implement many of the ideas without any other training in this area. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for
I'm currently writing my thesis, this book is perfect for anyone dealing with any kind of material that needs a fracture mechanics book. Just pure and simply perfect.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of room for improvement
Two specific things about this book keep me from rating it higher:

1- The book has a lot of errors. For instance, the polynomial equations for the stress concentration factors (K_I) in chapter 2 are labeled incorrectly. The diagrams for Center Cracked Tension and Double Edge Notched Tension are reversed. There are also other errors, but to list them all here would be pointless.

2- The problem set is close to worthless.Of the 600 page book, there are 18 pages of problems, or less than 100 total problems. The problems are not even that difficult. The "derivations" in the problem sets hardly require more than 2-3 lines of work, and very little deep thought. In other words, the problems are superficial.

Because of the lack of good problems and the errors (in fact, one of the problems seems to have an error in the difference between compliance and stiffness), I wouldn't feel comfortable using this book as a reference. No doubt, it does provide an excellent introduction or overview of fracture mechanics in general, but I would not feel comfortable with this book as my main source of information. There are also few examples with solutions to motivate learning.A good teacher is necessary to go beyond the basics of this text.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for mechanical engineering, I recomnend it to my students
This book covers most of the fundamental topics in fracture mechanics. I recommend it to my undergraduate students. It is very easy to understand. This book is a fundamental source in fracture mechanics. It is a classic book recommended by numerous bibliographies regarding this field of study.

3-0 out of 5 stars Broad overview with not much rigor
This book covers most of the fundamental topics in fracture mechanics. However, it lacks derivations of the equations, and the illustrations are a very crude. This book is probably appropriate for undergraduate level work, but not for graduate level.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Review on Elasticity in Engineering Mechanics
A unique feature of this book is to present the theories and applications of Elasticity in combination with up-to-date interdisciplinary research results in science and engineering, based on the authors' extensive experience. Following the example of modern continuum mechanics, the theories of deformation and of stress are treated separately in the book to identify their mathematical similarities and their physical differences. The focus of the book is on the theories of deformation and of stress, the stress-strain relations, and the fundamental boundary-value problems of Elasticity. This is not only an excellent textbook for graduate students, but also provides active researchers with useful reference resources on interdisciplinary research findings of current interests.

5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding book
This is an outstanding books in elasticity - one of the best. It has an excellent balance between mathematics, materials, mechanics and computations. I highly recommend it as a textbook at the senior and graduate levels and as a reference book for scientists and engineers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Elasticity in Engineering Mechanics
This is an excellent textbook for senior undergraduate and starting graduate students. The book provides the necessary mathematical background at the beginning. As a result, readers do not have to long math book before embarking on this mechanics book. The book also stricks a bood balance of mathematic rigor and conceptual intuition. Graduate students can take this book as a starting point, and dive into more advanced books, if they choose to major in mechanics. The book is a good syngergy of various chapters - linkage is made from one chapter to another. I find this very informative. Overall, I like the book very much.

This is good book, starts with a pretty good review on the mathematical foundation you need to continue through it, vector algebra, tensor analysis, calculus of variations, etc. then starts with theory of deformation , theory of stress, three dimesional equations of elasticity, plane theory of elasticity in rectangular cartisian coordinates, etc. As you can see the text begins with the most general theory an carries through a great deal of detail in the derivation of the equations. This is the text book for the AE731 theory of elasticity class in the aerospace department at WSU. I think this is definetely a good book though I would not reccommend its use to an introductory level, this is more for upper level or graduate students because it sometimes gets pretty difficult in the mathematical theory. I am currently using it and I would say you should buy it.

Although again a warning, the mathematical level you need sometimes is high but with the review in the first chapter and the help of your instructor is a valuable tool in elasticity in the point of view of grad student. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Worse than his lectures
This book is just bad.Like calculus, statics is one of the most crucial courses for an engineering student and if you don't truly learn the material, the road ahead will be tough. This book will not help you. There are three aspects to this book: informational material (5%), example problems (45%), end of section problems (50%).It can feel like some of the sections with informational material, can fit on an index card.

The author has taken the approach of "Learning by doing" and as such, there are loads of example problems. Some sections talk about a given principle for less than half a page and then have 6+ pages of example problems. This would be an excellent thing, however the explanations on the applicaton of the principles in an example is curt and almost always a re-hash of the already very brief paragraphs in the "informational" section. This leads you to spend most of your time just trying to follow the logic (which isn't explained) in the example problem at which point your statics class becomes more of a self-taught experience.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great price Great condition
The book arrived quickly and was in excellent condition, cost was great too, about half the price I would have paid at our campus book store

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Thourough Statics Text
The greatest feature of this book is the generous use of examples throughout. For every type of problem, there is some close example that you can refer to.

Even though I didn't particularly enjoy the class forwhich this text was assigned, I think that the book itself is a greatresource, and should be recognized as so. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Mechanics of Solids emphasizes the development of analysis techniques from basic principles for a broad range of practical problems, including simple structures, pressure vessels, beams and shafts. Increased use of personal computers has revolutionized the way in which engineering problems are being solved and this is reflected in the way subjects such as mechanics of solids are taught. A unique feature of this book is the integration of numerical and computer techniques and programs for carrying out analyses, facilitating design, and solving the problems found at the end of each chapter. However, the underlying theory and traditional manual solution methods cannot be ignored and are presented prior to the introduction of computer techniquesAll programs featured in the book are in FORTRAN 77-the language most widely used by engineers and most portable between computers. All of the programs are suitable for PCs, minicomputers, or mainframes and are available on disk.Another important feature of this book is its use of both traditional and SI units. Many examples through the text are worked in both sets of units. The data and results for every example are also shown in both types of units.Mechanics of Solids is intended for use in a first course in mechanics of solids offered to undergraduates. An Instructor's Manual containing solutions to every problem in the book is available. ... Read more
