Editorial Review Product Description Modern computer simulations make stress analysis easy. As they continue to replace classical mathematical methods of analysis, these software programs require users to have a solid understanding of the fundamental principles on which they are based. Develop Intuitive Ability to Identify and Avoid Physically Meaningless Predictions Applied Mechanics of Solids is a powerful tool for understanding how to take advantage of these revolutionary computer advances in the field of solid mechanics. Beginning with a description of the physical and mathematical laws that govern deformation in solids, the text presents modern constitutive equations, as well as analytical and computational methods of stress analysis and fracture mechanics. It also addresses the nonlinear theory of deformable rods, membranes, plates, and shells, and solutions to important boundary and initial value problems in solid mechanics. The author uses the step-by-step manner of a blackboard lecture to explain problem solving methods, often providing the solution to a problem before its derivation is presented. This format will be useful for practicing engineers and scientists who need a quick review of some aspect of solid mechanics, as well as for instructors and students. Select and Combine Topics Using Self-Contained Modules and Subsections Borrowing from the classical literature on linear elasticity, plasticity, and structural mechanics, this book: Complemented by the author’s website, which features problem sets and sample code for self study, this book offers a crucial overview of problem solving for solid mechanics. It will help readers make optimal use of commercial finite element programs to achieve the most accurate prediction results possible. Customer Reviews (3)

Theres a book including this one
very concise and thorough that said, fung focuses on formulating elasticty in a form used by engineers and scientists to obtain explicit solutions to selected problems. some physicists may find this form of elasticity somewhat abstracted from reality. if you're interested in an analysis of how elasticity came about and what were its motivations, you'll have to look to tymoshenko, sokolnikov, or love. on the other hand, if you're a practicing engineer, you're likely more interested in numerical solutions or the finite element method. for such applications, better references are holzapfel or gurtin.
This book IS in print! From the preface: "The classical part is mainly a re-issue of Fung's Foundations of Solid Mechanics, with a major addition to the modern theories of plasticity, and a major revision of the theory of large elastic deformation with finite strains."

Pea-brained and Penurious Publishers There once was a time whenpublishers recognized and appreciated excellence and felt a certainobligation to publish important, but less profitable, books. Somepublishers actually took pleasure in making available great books to thosenow underappreciated readers who revel in them. Many of today's publisherseither don't recognize important books, or they see no reason (financiallyspeaking) to publish for a limited audience of discriminating readers. These publisher's brains must be the size of peas, or a dollar signs $. ... Editorial Review Product Description Inelastic Analysis of Solids and Structures presents in a unified manner the physical and theoretical background of inelastic material models and computational methods, and illustrates the behavior of the models in typical engineering conditions. The book describes experimental observations and principles of mechanics, and efficient computational algorithms for stress calculations as typically performed in finite element analysis. The theoretical background is given to an extent necessary to describe the commonly employed material models in metal isotropic and orthotropic plasticity, thermoplasticity and viscoplasticity, and the plasticity of geological materials. The computational algorithms are developed in a unified manner with some detailed derivations of the algorithmic relations. Many solved examples are presented, which are designed to give insight into the material behavior in various engineering conditions, and to demonstrate the application of the computational algorithms.
