Editorial Review Product Description The text corresponds to material for two semester courses (Part I and Part II, respectively) and is essentially self-contained. Prerequisites for the first part are minimal amounts of linear algebra and calculus. For the second part, some knowledge of topology and measure theory is recommended. Each of the 11 chapters is followed by numerous exercises, with solutions given at the end of the book. The text is ideal for a one-year course. It will also provide a sound basis for further study. It is suitable for graduate students and researchers interested in operator theory and functional analysis. Customer Reviews (1)

A masterful treatment of Analysis This book however, does a superb job of guiding the student through the study of Mathematical Analysis in a very accessible, yet rigorous way. This wonderful text covers everything from the basicproperties of the Real number system, to basic Topological concepts, toFunction Analysis, to Differentiation and Integration in R^n, to BasicFourier Analysis. All this and more, in an upfront, logical fashion whichanyone could follow. The excercises given in each section are superb andgeniunely serve to extend the student's understanding. After readingthis book I was able to test out of all the undergraduate Analysis coursesat my University and jump straight into Graduate level courses, which I didvery well in.I could not be more appreciative of Dr. Douglass'help. Douglass should be commended for this extremely insightful, helpfulwork.Whether you have never studied Analysis before, or are seeking tofurther your understanding of this most interesting and honored subject, Iheartily recommend this outstanding text. You will not be dissapointed. ... Editorial Review Product Description The purpose of the volume is to provide a support for a first course in Mathematical Analysis, along the lines of the recent Programme Specifications for mathematical teaching in European universities. The contents are organised to appeal especially to Engineering, Physics and Computer Science students, all areas in which mathematical tools play a crucial role. Basic notions and methods of differential and integral calculus for functions of one real variable are presented in a manner that elicits critical reading and prompts a hands-on approach to concrete applications. The layout has a specifically-designed modular nature, allowing the instructor to make flexible didactical choices when planning an introductory lecture course. The book may in fact be employed at three levels of depth. At the elementary level the student is supposed to grasp the very essential ideas and familiarise with the corresponding key techniques. Proofs to the main results befit the intermediate level, together with several remarks and complementary notes enhancing the treatise. The last, and farthest-reaching, level consists of links to online material, which enable the strongly motivated reader to explore further into the subject. Definitions and properties are furnished with substantial examples to stimulate the learning process. Over 350 solved exercises complete the text, at least half of which guide the reader to the solution. |

Editorial Review Product Description The objective of this textbook is to provide a very basic and accessible introduction to option pricing, invoking only a minimum of stochastic analysis. Although short, it covers the theory essential to the statistical modeling of stocks, pricing of derivatives (general contingent claims) with martingale theory, and computational finance including both finite-difference and Monte Carlo methods. The reader is led to an understanding of the assumptions inherent in the Black & Scholes theory, of the main idea behind deriving prices and hedges, and of the use of numerical methods to compute prices for exotic contracts. The author's style is compact and to-the-point, requiring of the reader only basic mathematical skills. In contrast to many books addressed to an audience with greater mathematical experience, it can appeal to many practitioners, e.g. in industry, looking for an introduction to this theory without too much detail. It dispenses with introductory chapters summarising the theory of stochastic analysis and processes, leading the reader instead through the stochastic calculus needed to perform the basic derivations and understand the basic tools It focuses on ideas and methods rather than full rigour, while remaining mathematically correct. The book aims at describing the basic assumptions (empirical finance) behind option theory, something that is very useful for those wanting actually to apply this. Further, it includes a big section on pricing using both the pde-approach and the martingale approach (stochastic finance). Finally, the reader is presented the two main approaches for numerical computation of option prices (computational finance). In this chapter and also in the companion CD-ROM, Visual Basic code is supplied for all methods, in the form of an add-in for Excel. The book could be used at introductory level in Universities, with exercises (with solutions) after each chapter. Finally, I also discuss questions about incomplete markets, and have references to different practical/theoretical approaches to solve pricing problems in such markets. Customer Reviews (1)

Editorial Review Product Description "Real Infinite Series"presents the theory of real infinite series, including elementary and advanced tests for convergence or divergence, the harmonic series, the alternating harmonic series, and closely related results. One chapter offers 107 concise, crisp, surprising results about infinite series.Recognizing the interest in problem solving that abounds with students of mathematics, the authors devote a chapter to problems on infinite series, and solutions, which have appeared on the annual William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition. The lighter side of infinite series is treated in the concluding chapter where three puzzles, eighteen visuals (what Martin Gardner calls "look-see" diagrams), and several fallacious proofs are made available. Three appendices provide a listing of true or false statements, answers to why the harmonic series is so named, and an extensive list of published works devoted entirely or partially to infinite series.
