Evolutionary Algorithms in Engineering and Computer Science Edited by K. Miettinen, University of Jyväskylä, Finland M. M. Mäkelä, University of Jyväskylä, Finland P. Neittaanmäki, University of Jyväskylä, Finland J. Périaux, Dassault Aviation, France What is Evolutionary Computing? Based on the genetic message encoded in DNA, and digitalized algorithms inspired by the Darwinian framework of evolution by natural selection, Evolutionary Computing is one of the most important information technologies of our times. Evolutionary algorithms encompass all adaptive and computational models of natural evolutionary systems - genetic algorithms, evolution strategies, evolutionary programming and genetic programming. In addition, they work well in the search for global solutions to optimization problems, allowing the production of optimization software that is robust and easy to implement. Furthermore, these algorithms can easily be hybridized with traditional optimization techniques. This book presents state-of-the-art lectures delivered by international academic and industrial experts in the field of evolutionary computing. It bridges artificial intelligence and scientific computing with a particular emphasis on real-life problems encountered in application-oriented sectors, such as aerospace, electronics, telecommunications, energy and economics. This rapidly growing field, with its deep understanding and assesssment of complex problems in current practice, provides an effective, modern engineering tool. This book will therefore be of significant interest and value to all postgraduates, research scientists and practitioners facing complex optimization problems. ... Read more

Product Description
Discrete Convex Analysis is a novel paradigm for discrete optimization that combines the ideas in continuous optimization (convex analysis) and combinatorial optimization (matroid/submodular function theory) to establish a unified theoretical framework for nonlinear discrete optimization. The study of this theory is expanding with the development of efficient algorithms and applications to a number of diverse disciplines like matrix theory, operations research, and economics. This self-contained book is designed to provide a novel insight into optimization on discrete structures and should reveal unexpected links among different disciplines. It is the first and only English-language monograph on the theory and applications of discrete convex analysis.

The theory of discrete convex analysis has attracted the interest of many researchers in the field of optimization. Discrete Convex Analysis provides the information that professionals in optimization will need to "catch up" with this new theoretical development. It also presents an unexpected connection between matroid theory and mathematical economics and expounds a deeper connection between matrices and matroids than most standard textbooks. Professionals in areas other than optimization will enjoy applying these new mathematical techniques and ideas to their own problems. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Hard" Math Made Enjoyable & Almost Easy
This is another very excellent and extremely readable book by Stroud & Booth. It's math at its nuts and bolts level. It's geared for engineering types like me, but also for do-it-yourselfers.With Stroud & Booth, there is no such thing as "hard" math. They are uncanny at anticipating those areas where misunderstanding can arise and answering your questions before you even ask them. Every type of problem is not only worked out in detail but is fully explained and fitted into the overall context of the material. You can actually sit down and read this book like a novel and enjoy it.Everything is developed and tied together like the characters and plot of a good novel. For instance, much time is spent bringing you up to speed on partial derivatives, complex mappings and line integrals before the study of Complex Calculus. And, the best part is that you are learning or relearning some very sophisticated math and math tools without pain or boredom.Who would have thought that a former math-hater like me could actually enjoy doing not just line integrals, but Schwarz-Christoffel transformations and other neat stuff.

This book gets through the whole subject nicely. It's concise, precise and yet panoramic. And, once you have mastered Stroud & Booth. you will feel equipped to continue your studies in more traditional texts as I do. The kind that have 800 to 1200 pages of depth and detail on the subject with lots of theory and proofs.

Product Description
This book provides general descriptions of children’s learning and is intended to help show how children approach mathematics differently than adults. By connecting children’s thinking to your own learning, we hope that this book will improve your understanding of both mathematics and children’s thinking, thereby enhancing your teaching of mathematics to children. The more you understand mathematics and how children think about mathematics, the better teacher you will be!

Each chapter section contains insights and examples of how children come to understand mathematics.  Many of the descriptions of how children learn are based on research, but some are based on the authors’ personal experiences with helping children learn mathematics.  As appropriate, the authors also include information on the “why” behind certain mathematical topics, how to incorporate manipulatives into the classroom, and some activities to try. Each section also has “Questions for Discussion” to encourage reflection while learning. At the end of each section are “Problems and Exercises” that are specifically designed to help show how children learn mathematics. The material is presented by topic, following the standard topics covered in a traditional mathematics for future elementary or middle school teacher’s
course.

Product Description
The integration of new sources of energy like wind power, solar-power, small-scale generation, or combined heat and power in the power grid is something that impacts a lot of stakeholders: network companies (both distribution and transmission), the owners and operators of the DG units, other end-users of the power grid (including normal consumers like you and me) and not in the least policy makers and regulators.

There is a lot of misunderstanding about the impact of DG on the power grid, with one side (including mainly some but certainly not all, network companies) claiming that the lights will go out soon, whereas the other side (including some DG operators and large parks of the general public) claiming that there is nothing to worry about and that it's all a conspiracy of the large production companies that want to protect their own interests and keep the electricity price high.

The authors are of the strong opinion that this is NOT the way one should approach such an important subject as the integration of new, more environmentally friendly, sources of energy in the power grid. With this book the authors aim to bring some clarity to the debate allowing all stakeholders together to move to a solution. This book will introduce systematic and transparent methods for quantifying the impact of DG on the power grid.
