Editorial Review Product Description "[This text] is carefully prepared, well-organized, and covers a large part of the central theory...[there are] chapters on biorthogonal wavelets and wavelet packets, topics which are rare in wavelet books. Both are important, and this feature is an extra argument in favour of [this] book...the material is accessible [even] to less advanced readers...the book is a nice addition to the series." --Zentralblatt Math "This book can be recommended to everyone, especially to students looking for a detailed introduction to the subject." --Mathematical Reviews "This textbook is an introduction to the mathematical theory of wavelet analysis at the level of advanced calculus. Some applications are described, but the main purpose of the book is to develop---using only tools from a first course in advanced calculus---a solid foundation in wavelet theory. It succeeds admirably.... Part I of the book contains 112 pages of preliminary material, consisting of four chapters on 'Functions and Convergence,' 'Fourier Series,' 'Fourier Transforms,' and 'Signals and Systems....' This preliminary material is so well written that it could serve as an excellent supplement to a first course in advanced calculus.... The heart of the book is Part III: 'Orthonormal Wavelet bases.'This material has become the canonical portion of wavelet theory.Walnut does a first-rate job explaining the ideas here.... Ample references are supplied to aid the reader.... There are exercises at the end of each section, 170 in all, and they seem to be consistent with the level of the text....To cover the whole book would require a year.An excellent one-semester course could be based on a selection of chapters from Parts II, III, and V." --SIAM Review "An Introduction to Wavelet Analysis" provides a comprehensive presentation of the conceptual basis of wavelet analysis, including the construction and application of wavelet bases. The book develops the basic theory of wavelet bases and transforms without assuming any knowledge of Lebesgue integration or the theory of abstract Hilbert spaces. The book elucidates the central ideas of wavelet theory by offering a detailed exposition of the Haar series, and then shows how a more abstract approach allows one to generalize and improve upon the Haar series. Once these ideas have been established and explored, variations and extensions of Haar construction are presented. The mathematical prerequisites for the book are a course in advanced calculus, familiarity with the language of formal mathematical proofs, and basic linear algebra concepts. Features: * Rigorous proofs have consistent assumptions about the mathematical background of the reader (does not assume familiarity with Hilbert spaces or Lebesgue measure). * Complete background material is offered on Fourier analysis topics. * Wavelets are presented first on the continuous domain and later restricted to the discrete domain for improved motivation and understanding of discrete wavelet transforms and applications. * Special appendix, "Excursions in Wavelet Theory," provides a guide to current literature on the topic * Over 170 exercises guide the reader through the text. "An Introduction to Wavelet Analysis" is an ideal text/reference for a broad audience of advanced students and researchers in applied mathematics, electrical engineering, computational science, and physical sciences. It is also suitable as a self-study reference for professionals. Customer Reviews (1)

The best book onPDEs
Fourier Analysis and Boundary Value Problems
One of "THE" Books on Fourier and Boundary Value Problems In a nutshell, this book is great! I used it to study for my PhD Quals in physics. It has a nice portion on Green's functions. The book is 'mathematical' but the backdrop on the topics are based on physical problems. The historical notes are great, and act as a complement to the physical problems (I'm not a big fan of history in textbooks, but this book does a nice job of integrating it). Lots of problems are given, though no solutions are given for any of them. It would be a nice compliment to at least show the start, a tid bit in the middle, and then the solution. The solution at the very least. There are other books that do provide solutions to the types of problems listed here, but it would be nice just to carry around this one when learning boundary value problems. A must for anyone that works on any problems that have ODEs, PDEs, Fourier and Laplace transforms, Boundary Value Problems and Green's Functions. You won't be disappointed!

excellent book on Fourier analysis
"Applications..." yields amazing Clarity on Transforms I was warned by a graduating Electrical Engineering Senior to study Fourier Transforms before taking ECE-303, Signals and System theory.Quite simply, ECE-303 was the weeding course, because most students were struggling with the transforms while also trying to learn system theory.Fortunately, I heeded the senior's advice and picked up copy of "Applications ...".At the time, it was a bit much for my tight student budget, but it earned its keep.I read the book over the summer before the class.Because the book is so well written, I was able to digest it completely on my own.It has the greatest clarity I've seen on the topic.Having an Engineering disposition, I immediate consumed his explanations that tie things back to the "frequency content" view.I not only aced the class, but I really enjoyed it.It's what Engineering was about. Here I am (fast forward 10 years) taking an Engineering Statistics class to get back into things.Low and behold, Weaver comes in again. In the advanced areas of studies in statistics I've picked up on references to the Fourier Transform in the topics of moments, moment generating functions, and the Central Limit Theorem. As it happens, Chapter 11, Stochastic Analyis covers this topic, and I've now got the concepts.Of course, I've had to re-read Chapter 3, The Fourier Transform, since it has been, after all, a great while since I applied them! ... Editorial Review Product Description The book is written for graduate students who have read the first book and like to see the proofs which were not given there and/or want to see the full extent of the theory. On the other hand it can be read independently from the first one, only a modest knowledge on Fourier series/tranform is required to understand the examples. This book fills a major gap in the textbook literature, as a full proof of Pontryagin Duality and Plancherel Theorem is hard to come by. It is usually given in books that focus on C*-algebras and thus carry too much technical overload for the reader who only wants these basic results of Harmonic Analysis. Other proofs use the structure theory which carries the reader away in a different direction. Here the authors consider the Banach-algebra approach more elegant and enlighting. They provide a streamlined approach that reaches the main results directly, and they also give the generalizations to the non-Abelian case. Another main pillar of Harmonic analysis is the Poisson Summation Formula. We give its generalization to LCA-groups. The Selberg Trace Formula is considered the generalization of the Poisson Formula to non-abelian groups. The authors give the first textbook approach to this deep and useful formula in full generality. The last two chapters are devoted to examples of applications of the Selberg Trace Formula. |

Principles of Fourier Analysis
I really Like this Book It presentation is not as intense and terse as Lighthill's and Zemanian's on this subject. There is a good balance between the rigor and pedagogy that is quite appealing to me, along with examples and exercise with some answers/hints in the back for the end of chapter exercises. Hopefully, Dr. Howell will update this book soon if needed. Also, it would be nice if the book were available in the size, shape and price of the books published by Dover. The book is quite big, thick and costs a hundred bucks. Overall, I think many like/would like this book - it seems to get much use in the Library. ... Read more |

Editorial Review Product Description A carefully prepared account of the basic ideas in Fourier analysis and its applications to the study of partial differential equations. The author succeeds to make his exposition accessible to readers with a limited background, for example, those not acquainted with the Lebesgue integral. Readers should be familiar with calculus, linear algebra, and complex numbers. At the same time, the author has managed to include discussions of more advanced topics such as the Gibbs phenomenon, distributions, Sturm-Liouville theory, Cesaro summability and multi-dimensional Fourier analysis, topics which one usually does not find in books at this level. A variety of worked examples and exercises will help the readers to apply their newly acquired knowledge. Customer Reviews (1)

Editorial Review Product Description The majority of publications in spectral techniques consider Fourier transform on Abelian groups. However, non-Abelian groups provide notable advantages in efficient implementations of spectral methods. Fourier Analysis on Finite Groups with Applications in Signal Processing and System Design examines aspects of Fourier analysis on finite non-Abelian groups and discusses different methods used to determine compact representations for discrete functions providing for their efficient realizations and related applications. Switching functions are included as an example of discrete functions in engineering practice. Additionally, consideration is given to the polynomial expressions and decision diagrams defined in terms of Fourier transform on finite non-Abelian groups. A solid foundation of this complex topic is provided by beginning with a review of signals and their mathematical models and Fourier analysis. Next, the book examines recent achievements and discoveries in: Among the highlights is an in-depth coverage of applications of abstract harmonic analysis on finite non-Abelian groups in compact representations of discrete functions and related tasks in signal processing and system design, including logic design. All chapters are self-contained, each with a list of references to facilitate the development of specialized courses or self-study. With nearly 100 illustrative figures and fifty tables, this is an excellent textbook for graduate-level students and researchers in signal processing, logic design, and system theory-as well as the more general topics of computer science and applied mathematics. |
