Editorial Review Product Description Functions in R and C, including the theory of Fourier series, Fourier integrals and part of that of holomorphic functions, form the focal topic of these two volumes. Based on a course given by the author to large audiences at Paris VII University for many years, the exposition proceeds somewhat nonlinearly, blending rigorous mathematics skilfully with didactical and historical considerations. It sets out to illustrate the variety of possible approaches to the main results, in order to initiate the reader to methods, the underlying reasoning, and fundamental ideas. It is suitable for both teaching and self-study. In his familiar, personal style, the author emphasizes ideas over calculations and, avoiding the condensed style frequently found in textbooks, explains these ideas without parsimony of words. The French edition in four volumes, published from 1998, has met with resounding success: the first two volumes are now available in English. |

Editorial Review Product Description From the reviews of the first edition: "This lovely book is intended as a primer in harmonic analysis at the undergraduate level. All the central concepts of harmonic analysis are introduced using Riemann integral and metric spaces only. The exercises at the end of each chapter are interesting and challenging..." Sanjiv Kumar Gupta for MathSciNet "... In this well-written textbook the central concepts of Harmonic Analysis are explained in an enjoyable way, while using very little technical background. Quite surprisingly this approach works. It is not an exaggeration that each undergraduate student interested in and each professor teaching Harmonic Analysis will benefit from the streamlined and direct approach of this book." Ferenc Móricz for Acta Scientiarum Mathematicarum This book is a primer in harmonic analysis using an elementary approach. Its first aim is to provide an introduction to Fourier analysis, leading up to the Poisson Summation Formula. Secondly, it makes the reader aware of the fact that both, the Fourier series and the Fourier transform, are special cases of a more general theory arising in the context of locally compact abelian groups. The third goal of this book is to introduce the reader to the techniques used in harmonic analysis of noncommutative groups. There are two new chapters in this new edition. One on distributions will complete the set of real variable methods introduced in the first part. The other on the Heisenberg Group provides an example of a group that is neither compact nor abelian, yet is simple enough to easily deduce the Plancherel Theorem. Professor Deitmar is Professor of Mathematics at the University of T"ubingen, Germany. He is a former Heisenberg fellow and has taught in the U.K. for some years. In his leisure time he enjoys hiking in the mountains and practicing Aikido. |

Good choice for the novice interested in Fourier Analysis Throughout my graduate career, I searched desperately for a book that covered Fourier Analysis in a manner that would be lucid to a novice.Of all the books that I've seen dealing with the subject, I rank Morrison's as the best in this category. Most books dealing with Fourier Analysis appear tobe written for someone with a degree in mathematics.Although I would say that this book is an excellent introduction to Fourier analysis and the Fourier transform, the reader must possess a strong working knowledge of calculus at the least. The book is presented in the classic textbook format, where each section is introduced and explained with examples, then a series of problems are presented to reinforce the concepts presented. The first half of the book covers continuous Fourier analysis, and the second half of the book covers discreet Fourier analysis. Some may argue that these two concepts could have been introduced simultaneously, however I found this dichomtomy to be an effective way of presenting the material. The book is geared towards undergraduate students of electrical engineering, but I think that it is appropriate for anyone wishing to learnFourier analysis. The book is replete with exercises to be completed with the accompanying diskettes (both Mac and PC are included), but I never used them. This book is the best I've seen dealing with the subject, but I did have to proceed very slowly.I did not understand all of the concepts presented, perhaps because of my limited mathematics background (as high as calculus). For this reason, I rate the book a seven. ... Editorial Review Product Description This accessible, self-contained book provides meaningful interpretations of essential formulas in the context of applications, building a solid foundation for the application of Fourier analysis in the many diverging and continuously evolving areas in digital signal processing enterprises. It comprehensively covers the DFT of windowed sequences, various discrete convolution algorithms and their applications in digital filtering and filters, and many FFT algorithms unified under the frameworks of mixed-radix FFTs and prime factor FFTs. A large number of graphical illustrations and worked examples help explain the concepts and relationships from the very beginning of the text. Requiring no prior knowledge of Fourier analysis or signal processing, this book supplies the basis for using FFT algorithms to compute the DFT in a variety of application areas. |

Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry
Good Book
FTIR Bible The book is really geared to the chemist, however, additional material on alignment techniques and a more complete and jointed discussion on design trade-offs and instrument characterization would make it much more useful to other users. Bottom line:It is still a great reference
The Classic Reference on FTIR 1. The book is written at a rather advanced level, and is full of mathematics. For doctorate level scientists and engineersthis is fine, but it blows away anyone without the appropriate math andscience background. As a result, beginners to the field are often timesfrustrated with this book. The book is more approriate for instrumentdesigners and lab managers than it is for the average technician runningspectra. 2. The book was written in 1986, and parts of it are terriblyoutdated. Not surprisingly, discussions of specific computers, software, and instruments were outdated years ago.Things that the book predictswill happen, have long ago come to pass.Certain important newdevelopments, such as IR Microscopy, FT-Raman, and new applications of StepScanning, are totally missing.Come on guys...its time for a new edition. ... Editorial Review Product Description The pedagogy in this classic text is excellent. The author has included such tools as the pictorial dictionary of transforms and bibliographic references. In addition, there are many excellent problems throughout this book, which are more than mathematical exercises, often requiring students to think in terms of specific situations or asking for educated opinions. To aid students further, discussions of many of the problems can be found at the end of the book. A pinnacle
Nothing better than learning from the experts. This thick book (695 pages) includes most of the topics inharmonic analysis which have been researched extensively during the last 20years. It should be taken as a complement to Stein's "SingularIntegrals and Differentiability Properties of Functions" (1970) andStein & Weiss' "Introduction to Fourier Analysis on EuclideanSpaces" (1971). Its contents are: Real variable theory (coveringlemmas, maximal function, generalized Calderón-Zygmund decomposition, etc.), maximal functions (vector-valued max. functions, Carlesson measures, etc.), Hardy spaces (characterization, atomic decomposition, singularintegrals, etc.), H^1 and BMO (sharp function, interpolation, etc.),weighted inequalities (the class A_p, etc.), Fourier transform, almostorthogonality, oscillatory integrals, maximal operators, maximal averages, the Heisenberg group. The style is concise and presents motivation foreach topic. Includes excercises - called "further results" -which are short research topics on their own, and an extensive list ofreferences. The cloth bound is lovely. Superb book; a must in everyanalyst's library. Please check my other reviews (just click on my nameabove). ... Read more |
