Editorial Review Product Description This book offers a thorough and systematic examination of theoretical and computational aspects of least-squares finite element methods. The range of topics spans formal mathematical analysis and framework for least squares methods, application of this framework to concrete partial differential equations and discussion of the computational properties of the methods. The abstract least-squares framework will help readers navigate the realm of least-squares methods while the many numerical examples provide a valuable practical guide to these methods. Most of the necessary background material is contained in several appendices. Chapter summaries and detailed illustrations are included . Graduate students and computational science researchers will find this book useful. |

certainly better than decent
An excellent and unique perspective on combinatorics I highly recommend this book to both mathematicians and computer scientists. Although the book has very few "algorithms" in it, the thinking and reasoning about discrete structures (e.g. families of finite sets and multisets) will do wonders in developing the mind of a computer scientist, whether advanced or undergraduate. Yet it is quite sad that many cs departments (and math for that matter) invest little if any curriculum in discrete mathematics. Hopefully this will change at least to the point where the cs major will take two or three semesters of discrete math instead of two or three of calculus. For, as this book demonstrates, calculus is not a prerequisite for engaging one's mind in some quite fascinating mathematical problems related to finite sets. Finally, it should be noted that Bela Bollobas also has an interesting book titled "Combinatorics: Set Systems, etc...." which significantly intersects with this book, but not to the degree where the reader should think they are interchangeable. I recommend both, and to read Anderson's book first; as I believe this book lays a better foundation than the latter. ... Read more |

Editorial Review Product Description Taking a practical approach to the subject, Advanced Engineering Mathematics with MATLAB®, Third Edition continues to integrate technology into the conventional topics of engineering mathematics. The author employs MATLAB to reinforce concepts and solve problems that require heavy computation. MATLAB scripts are available for download at www.crcpress.com Along with new examples, problems, and projects, this updated and expanded edition incorporates several significant improvements. New to the Third Edition Suitable for a differential equations course or a variety of engineering mathematics courses, the text covers fundamental techniques and concepts as well as Laplace transforms, separation of variable solutions to partial differential equations, the z-transform, the Hilbert transform, vector calculus, and linear algebra. It also highlights many modern applications in engineering to show how these topics are used in practice. A solutions manual is available for qualifying instructors. Customer Reviews (2)
