5-0 out of 5 stars best for math majors
if you have gone through the vol 1, then you do not need my review. I feel vol 1 and 2 are the best calc books for math majors. There is just enough theory to make the transition to analysis very smooth. These 2 books cover calc 1-2-3 and diff eq. plus some more. The author is very clear. Look for a cheaper copy on-line.

5-0 out of 5 stars A nice continuation to the first volume.
This volume is the hammer of the two volumes, where as the first volume would be the nail. Once you've master volume one it's time to start digging for gold; the basics one learns in volume one will be expanded to multi-variables and applications that will challenge even the most skilled students. The introduction of linear algebra is a good preview of the things to come for those interested in pursuing mathematics even further.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not your starter book
The author is a world renownedmathematician, with many beautiful achievements under his belt. I would not include this popular textbook in this category.

I tried to use it formyreal analysis class but I decided otherwise when I opened the first volume. I believe strongly that the key concept underlying real analysisis the concept of convergence/continuity. What turned me off from this book was hisconsistentefforttoavoid this concept for the first half of the first volume which deals with rathersophisticated convergence problems involving Riemann/Darboux sums.

The choice of openinga beginner's book onanalysiswith Riemann integral is rather unusual. In itself, being unusual is not a negative, but in this specialcase I do not believe it ishelpful. I believethatin learning one should start with simpler examples and gradually increase the difficulty. In this book the reader is thrown in some of the most complex situations, whiledeliberately avoiding the two ton gorilla in the room. This is not how this reviewer and many of his students learn a new theory.

What is then a young reader to do?I have two strong recommendations. The first is the classic text by G.H. Hardy, A course in pure mathematics. This oldclassic is still relevant today.Hardywas an elegant writer with a beautiful mind, arguably one the best analysts of the 20th century. His book has rigor, geometric intuition, beautiful examples, and a genuineempathy for the green mind. Some exercises in this book can be a bit challenging, but always very rewarding.

The secondrecommendation is Terry Tao's textbook on real analysis. His is arguably one the the best analysts alive, andhehas a keen sense of the trapsawaiting the modernstudents. As faras organization, it follows the standardstructure, which I believewas a wise choice.Heis not out to blow your mind with his expertise, but toslowly and carefullypeel off the layers of mystery.

One more argument in favor ofHardy or Tao's books:the price. For any of them, you will payroughly half the price of Apostol's book, andyou will get more in return.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic, richness in knowledge few books attempt anymore.
I used these books (Vols. 1&2) in my last two years of high school back in South America. I remember long nights of bad coffee and cigarettes locked in my room reading it over and over. The book is full of really cool knowledge (even for a non-mathematician). Most of today's students learn like little parrots, (without thinking or understanding) just repeating things mindlessly. This will make this book unpopular among these people because having to read a sentence and stop to figure things out on their own is too hard a challenge for them. I guess that like the high standard of the education of old when teachers loved teaching and their subject this book is also going the way of the dinosaurs. I'll get my copy before that if I were you though ;-)

4-0 out of 5 stars A righteous calculus text
This one of the more righteous books in the author's oeuvre and that is saying something! The subject matter is closely akin to a course I took in Freshman year however it excludes manifolds and operatoins on them.In this respect, the book is not as good as some others out there for an integrated view that even a frosh can grasp. However, overlooking this shortcoming, the text is definitely righteous, being one of the few out there with this integrated approach and being a classic of sorts. ... Product Description
This is a book for those who want to understand the main ideas in the theory of optimal problems. It provides a good introduction to classical topics (under the heading of "the calculus of variations") and more modern topics (under the heading of "optimal control"). It employs the language and terminology of functional analysis to discuss and justify the setup of problems that are of great importance in applications. The book is concise and self-contained, and should be suitable for readers with a standard undergraduate background in engineering mathematics. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars what solutions?
There is no reason not to have all the solutions for Stewarts 6e Calculus book, but that is not what we get: we get half.
There is no reason not to have the solutions we get not to be worked out fully--how do you know what steps are omitted and which are included? You don't, unless you don't need this book.
Other than that it can help in a pinch as long as you don't count on it.This book is part of the Stewart Calculus Industry where you go from the simplest example problems to the ailen world of "exercises".I came for calculus, not his industry nor his ailen worlds--and yes, I speak French.

5-0 out of 5 stars exactly what I needed
sold this book back without realizing it would be needed later. Great condition. Fast shipping.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great purchase
Great service as usual and got here before time. If you're taking calc, go ahead and get this book, it's very helpful with the step by step

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent, but more practice problems would help
When it comes to math, I like a lot of practice problems to build a foundation of new material and work into the more challenging problems. This book does not do that.It does present a lot of information in each section but I would like it much more if it had more practice problems to really let the student get familiar with the new material before presenting more difficult problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have
I would recommend anyone taking Calculus and needing the work book to also buy this book. It has helped me figure out the harder even numbered problems by giving me an solutions for similar problems. I don't know what I would without it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Superb if you took calculus, understood it and need a quick refresher. Problematic for any other use.
This is another in the Schaum's series that is excellent for review, good as a supplement and almost impossible to use as a stand-alone learning tool. The problems are all suitable for the (re)study of differential and integral calculus, they are worked out in enough detail and the coverage of two semesters of calculus is essentially complete. If you have taken calculus and did well in the course, then there is no better way to perform a quick brushing up of your skills. Other than that, using this book is problematical.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure Calculus
This is a great book for anyone who wants to learn or supplement his or her knowledge of the subject.I have used this book for my first year of college calculus and thanks to it I received an A, because of that I will continue to use it, it helps you understand the problems, but you actually have to think about them, you have to find out how equations are related and/or used, that is calculus, Calculus involves thinking if it didn't then anyone could be a physicist.

2-0 out of 5 stars student
As I will be starting undergra engineering this fall(sept 00), I bought this book because I thought it would be a good supplement to my regular upper level calculus book from my senior year and thought it would be ofsome use in university. I really found this book to be a dissapointment(aswell as shaums 3000 solved problems in calculus). The way the material ispresented is not clear at all.The problem solutions are hardly presentedin a way in which the reader can understand and learn from them. They justconfuse the reader even more. As I have found with all Schaum's outlinesand solved problems books, they are of poor quality and of no real use toanyone. Try Harcourt Brace Jovonovich calculus (search HBJ Calculus). It ismuch better

This brief book presents an accessible treatment of multivariable calculus with an early emphasis on linear algebra as a tool. Its organization draws strong analogies with the basic ideas of elementary calculus (derivative, integral, and fundamental theorem). Traditional in approach, it is written with an assumption that the student reader may have computing facilities for two- and three-dimensional graphics, and for doing symbolic algebra.Chapter topics include coordinate and vector geometry, differentiation, applications of differentiation, integration, and fundamental theorems. For those with knowledge of introductory calculus in a wide range of disciplines including—but not limited to—mathematics, engineering, physics, chemistry, and economics. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not student-friendly...
I agree with the other reviewers, this book is useless. It doesn't even illustrate basic ideas effectively. I totally relied on my notes in order to pass my class.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for self study!
Barr's "Vector Calculus" is a muddled treatment of a fascinating topic.I had a great teacher, which was lucky for me, because I could not have taught myself vector calculus from this textbook in any reasonable amount of time. The reason is simple; Barr just isn't a very good writer. He doesn't know how to break things down into their essential components, and does not seem to understand how to use his physical examples to motivate the subject. Some of his presentation has a "backwards" feel to it and I often found myself not understanding a certain paragraph until I had finished another paragraph a page later (why not put that paragraph first!).This book was written to be taught by a good professor, someone who can fill in all of the missing pieces in class and provide the depth needed for the sometimes overly terse presentation.

If you happen to get a good teacher learning from the plan of this book can be quite rewarding.Barr impliments rudimentary linear algebra and some introductory topological concepts to deepen the subject matter.Unlike many other textbooks, he introduces the notion of "n"-space and defines the vector operations and differentiation and integration in that space. He also introduces vector valued functions and vector fields (the exciting stuff!) very early so that the student gets very familiar with them by the end of the semester.

Yet, whenever I found myself in need of explanation outside of class I would look to Varberg's treatment as found in "Calculus".Varberg's explanations are much more structured and thorough, and he is much more adept at appealing to the student's intuition. For self-study, Varberg's treatment is hard to beat.Overall, though, Barr does an admirable job, but he may have been a little too ambitious. In the hands of an excellent professor, though, "Vector Calculus" can be coaxed into displaying its unique, rich treatment of this fascinating topic.3.5 stars.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not too explanatory, and not suitable for beginners.
I am doing this book for cal III course in my college and we have almost finished it. But what strikes me as the good part of the book is the questions at the end of the chapter. However there is another thing whichalso has been very unfortunate about the book, it is very concise andstarts from a level which is higher than cal II , so for most people (as ihave seen in my class) it has been very rigorous at times. Unsufficientexplanations and little application makes it a very dry book. Overall iremember the times when i had to stay up till 3:30 in the morning trying tounderstand the chapters. ... Read more

This is the first truly up-to-date treatment of calculus of variations - and the first to incorporate a simple introduction to key concepts such as optimization, optimal control, bang-bang, Pontryagin's maximum principle, or LQ control design. Introduces all material using simple, easily understood applications that are worked and reprised several times throughout. Features a large number of exercises, ranging widely in difficulty. Gives readers a broader, "big picture" perspective that makes the material less overwhelming. Offers a useful, stand-alone discussion of MATLAB ("MATLAB Cookbook") in the appendices. 1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible.
I only purchased this book because it was required in my Calculus of Variations course.Explanations in this book are often difficult to follow, with many proofs leaving holes in their logic behind hand-wavey "it is trivial to show" statements. Many of these gaps in the logic seem to lead to incorrect conclusions.

The book, like many modern undergraduate texts, focuses too much on the "what" and the "how" rather than the "why," promoting an educational approach that favors memorization of algorithms and techniques with little to no understanding of their derivation, purpose, or inner workings.Homework problems are largely "plug-and-chug" without much to truly challenge the reader and test their understanding of the material.

At $130 for a used copy, this book is a colossal waste of money. If you really want to spend that much, get 15 copies of the Gelfand/Fomin book on the same topic.Pretty much the entirety of this book is covered concisely---and more completely---in the *first two chapters* of the Gelfand/Fomin book. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars very bad book
This books contains lecture notes for a course of Moser published after his death in 1999. It is a good example
that this practise is not very advisable since certainly Moser
would not have been happy with the outcome (the book
has been edited by a student of his).

The book is riddled with a very high number of misprints
and inaccuracies which leaves the impression
that no one has read the book prior to publication.
Many results are misstated and hard to understand
(for instance the basic theorem 1.4.4. should be
... Assume F_pp\ge 0 on \Omega. Then \gamma^star
can be embedded in an extremal field. ...)

The publisher would be well advised to offtake the book
immediately and publish a carefully corrected version

Product Description
International Series in Pure and Applied Mathematics WILLIAM TED MARTIN. CALCULUS OF VARIATIONS. PREFACE: There seems to have been published, up to the present time, no English language volume in which an elementary introduction to the calculus of variations is followed by extensive application of the subject to problems of physics and theoretical engineering. The present volume is offered as partial fulfillment of the need for such a book. Thus its chief purpose is twofold : ( i) To provide for the senior or first-year graduate student in mathe matics, science, or engineering an introduction to the ideas and techniques of the calculus of variations. ( The material of the first seven chapters with selected topics from the later chapters has been used several times as the subject matter of a 10-week course in the Mathematics Department at Stanford University.) ( ii) To illustrate the application of the calculus of variations in several fields outside the realm of pure mathematics. ( By far the greater emphasis is placed upon this second aspect of the book's purpose.) The range of topics considered may be determined at a glance in the table of contents. Mention here of some of the more significant omis sions may be pertinent: The vague, mechanical d method is avoided throughout. Thus, while no advantage is taken of a sometimes convenient shorthand tactic, there is eliminated a source of confusion which often grips the careful student when confronted with its use. No attempt is made to treat problems of sufficiency or existence: no consideration is taken of the second variation or of the conditions of Legendrc, Jacobi, and Weicrstrass. Besides being outside the scope of the chief aim of this book, these matters are excellently treated in the volumes of Bolza and Bliss listed in the Bibliography. Expansion theorems for the eigenfunctions associated with certain boundary-value problems are stated without proof. The proofs, beyond the scope of this volume, can be constructed, in most instances, on the basis of the theory of integral equations. Space limitations prevent inclusion of such topics as perturbation theory, heat flow, hydrodynamics, torsion and buckling of bars, Schwingcr's treatment of atomic scattering, and others. However, the reader who has mastered the essence of the material included should have little difficulty in applying the calculus of variations to most of the subjects which have been squeezed out. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Disaster
First time taking calculus - this book made it a disaster.I'll give the author one thing, he is a smart guy. However it seems as though Stewart has forgotten how difficult it is to learn this material.Explanations are wordy and overcomplicated, and example problems are constantly missing important steps. In addition, homework problems are almost undoable. My first assignment for calculus 2 (using the second half of the book) took six hours to complete with two other friends because we just couldn't wrap our brains around the concepts. The only reason this review has two stars instead of one is because of the useful integral table in the back and an attractive cover design.Beyond that, prepare to be lost. ... Product Description
This is the first book offering an application of regular variation to the qualitative theory of differential equations. The notion of regular variation, introduced by Karamata (1930), extended by several scientists, most significantly de Haan (1970), is a powerful tool in studying asymptotics in various branches of analysis and in probability theory. Here, some asymptotic properties (including non-oscillation) of solutions of second order linear and of some non-linear equations are proved by means of a new method that the well-developed theory of regular variation has yielded. A good graduate course both in real analysis and in differential equations suffices for understanding the book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars overall, pretty good book
The book did have some irritating mistakes in the back (no more than the average math book), but I give it a thumbs up for being pretty clear and readable throughout. Some problems I had using the book though are:

-it doesn't provide adequate examples, too few and not on the same level as the problems
-towards the end, it loses some coherence by splitting up related ideas into many formulas and notations.

Overall word, the book teaches pretty well, but a good teacher is really needed to wade through some of the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars ehhhh
i am using this book in my cal 3 class at this very moment. there are many mistakes in the text and the answers in the back of the book are sometimes wrong or they are factored in a weird way. the text is very easy tounderstand and with all it's shortcomings i dig this book ... Read more
