5-0 out of 5 stars Good job
The book came faster than expected which was a very pleasant surprise and was in good condition and as described.I would definitely recommend this seller and order again.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beware!
This text is not at all exhaustive. As the title indicates, it is a study guide only. I used this (required) "guide" for a graduate level nursing course in epidemiology and health promotion, but I think this book is geared more towards MPH courses, not MSN courses. It was somewhat helpful, but there is an assumption that the reader has a solid understanding of statistics and has previously read about epidemiology. Also, one would think there was an accompanying (main) text to go along with this "guide." Well, there is not. This is the main text, which makes it even more inappropriate for someone who is not majoring in epidemiology or biostatistics. So, don't expect this book to "guide" you through learning how to do biostatistics or epidemiology. You should have previous instruction in those areas or have a good instructor who will fill in the gaps for you. ... Read more

For the new edition of Biostatistics and Epidemiology, Dr. Wassertheil-Smoller has included several new chapters (genetic statistics, molecular epidemiology, scientific integrity and research ethics) and a new appendix on the basic concepts of genetics and a glossary of genetic terminology. She has also expanded the coverage of multi-center trials (an important aspect of implementation of the standards of evidence-based medicine), controversies in screening for prostate, colon, breast, and other cancers. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Good as far as it goes
Although billed as a 'primer for health & biomedical professionals', this book is actually too basic for that. Most in the field are not undergrads, and so need the more advanced statistical measuring methods explained more thoroughly (or, in some cases, at all). There is nothing about infective disease, so those measures are also lacking.

This book feels very disorganized, with little help from the index and contents. There are much better books of this type on the market - for example, Primer of Biostatistics by Stanton A. Glantz or even Epidemiology by Leon Gordis. I'd keep looking. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars User friendly and easy to understand
As a medical student who has been required to use many statistic textbooks, I found this biostatistic book to be particularly helpful. It was well organized and allowed me to find the necessary information quickly.I also appreciated the fact that concepts were explained in a concise way with numerous clinical examples.I recommend this book to any medical student who is looking for a user-friendly statistic textbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource!
This text is great. The field of statistics can seem very overwhelming at first and I didn't know which book to choose to get started. This book lays it out perfectly. It not only presents all the formulas and calculations you will need, but also applies them to everyday examples in the field, and is very easy to understand from a beginner's level. I recommend this text to anyone who is interested in the application of statistics in the medical field; moreover, why we use statistics to make scientific conclusions in the first place. ... The text prepares students and physicians to use applications of probability and statistics in the care of the individual patient. The emphasis is on using this data in problems of diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care. Each chapter includes a clinical case that demonstrates the application of biostatistics in the daily practice of medicine. The text is distinguished from Glantz' Biostatistics in two ways: 1) a greater focus on epidemiological data as it relates to biostatistics, and 2) more clinically oriented approach. Glantz' strength lies in its excellent introductory approach to the topic; Inglefinger is the logical next step into the clinical application. This edition features all-new references to the literature and many new clinical case examples. ... Read more

Product Description
Statistical analysis has become a fundamental quantitative skill for biology students. This highly accessible and thorough introduction to the use of statistics in the biological sciences emphasizes the relationships among probability, probability distributions, and hypothesis testing. The authors highlight the expected value of various test statistics under the null and research hypotheses to develop students understanding of hypotheses-testing methodology. Because student projects often have small sample sizes, nonparametric alternatives are included with the standard parametric techniques. The examples are easy to understand and are drawn from many areas in the life sciences, including genetics, physiology, ecology, agriculture, and medicine. The end-of-chapter problems require the student to choose the appropriate analysis, inducing them to hone decision-making skills that are critical to statistical analysis. 3-0 out of 5 stars A mediocre introduction to statistics
My masters degree is in Applied Statistics - I've taught intro stats for several years.I'm using this book in a course I'm taking and I'm fairly disappointed (and I'm only the first chapter in).

The book has frequent incorrect definitions about fundamental concepts. For example, the book defines a random variables are "...characteristics [which] vary in an unpredictable way ..."The whole idea of statistics is that random variables vary in predictable ways - they follow distributions that have probability densities, etc...

Also incorrect, they lump continuous data with interval data when they are two separate ideas.Continuous data has it's 'opposite' with discrete data and interval data is paired with ratio data (the book talks about ordinal and categorical data but completely ignores ratio).Interval data can be continuous or discrete as can ratio data.

I haven't gone through most of the rest of the book but if this early on the book is making these kinds of mistakes, I can only assume the remainder of the book is also of a mediocre nature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Notch
Buying this book online was a great experience. Shipped in top condition within 2 days :). As a college student, I was VERY pleased :).

2-0 out of 5 stars Not quite introductory
My Biostatistics professor is worthless. Thus, I and the rest of the class are left to teach ourselves from this text.Sadly, as an introductory book this text falls far short of what is needed.Reading the chapters is not very clarifying. The book neglects to explain certain basic concepts that are employed in resolving each of the statistical tests/methods employed. You are not sure where the critical values come from and have to do detective work to back the rule out of the answer. Not always possible as some solutions are only demonstrated one time and so you simply are left not knowing how to apply the rules for the solution...(i.e. is it right tailed, left tailed, is it 1 - alpha or 1 - alpha/2.)Simply put, the writer assumes that you understand these and many other concepts from the start and so you are left having to figure out what they did to solve it.Next, as with so many texts, some of the solutions do not match the questions. Why is there no solution manual for this book?I need to see how these were solved and have the rules applied described in order to teach myself the correct method of solving!Am I wrong? It does say "Introduction" in th title...That said, I was able to use the solutions provided by a professor to teach myself the methods in the aforementioned circuitous detective manner by solving all the questions in the chapters...

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent explanations
My biostats professor is one of the worst teachers I've ever had, so I basically have to teach myself the material. This book definitely explains the concepts wonderfully and provides a lot of examples to explain them even further. I don't mind studying out of it at all, and I normally hate math textbooks. ... Today, mathematics, biology, medicine, and statistics are closing the interdisciplinary gap in an unprecedented way and many of the important unanswered questions now emerge at the interface of these disciplines. Now in its Second Edition, this user-friendly guide on biostatistics focuses on the proper use and interpretation of statistical methods. This textbook does not require extensive background in mathematics, making it user-friendly for all students in the public health sciences field. Instead of highlighting derivations of formulas, the authors provide rationales for the formulas, allowing students to grasp a better understanding of the link between biology and statistics. The material on life tables and survival analysis allows students to better understand the recent literature in the health field, particularly in the study of chronic disease treatment. Biostatistics now includes a companion website to demonstrate the different applications of computer packages for performing the various analyses presented in this text.

*Includes access to a companion website with further examples and a full explanation of computer packages
* Over 40% new material with modern real-life examples, exercises and references

2-0 out of 5 stars Not good
The book is expensive and it ain't worth that amount of money. Topics explanation is tedious and some exercises don't make sense as in Ex 4.4 in page 100. The book didn't include the key answers for all the problems. Also, the examples in the book are in need for more reviewing by the author, sometimes the text refers to a table and the referred number is not correct. My be the book is updated but there is still mistakes in referring to tables number. I would recommend adding more examples with more easier and detailed explanation to cover a wide range of idea before practicing solving exercises. Overall I think the book is expensive and doesn't worth that much.

Product Description
There are numerous advantages to using Bayesian methods in diagnostic medicine, which is why they are employed more and more today in clinical studies. Exploring Bayesian statistics at an introductory level, Bayesian Biostatistics and Diagnostic Medicine illustrates how to apply these methods to solve important problems in medicine and biology.

After focusing on the wide range of areas where diagnostic medicine is used, the book introduces Bayesian statistics and the estimation of accuracy by sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values for ordinal and continuous diagnostic measurements. The author then discusses patient covariate information and the statistical methods for estimating the agreement among observers. The book also explains the protocol review process for cancer clinical trials, how tumor responses are categorized, how to use WHO and RECIST criteria, and how Bayesian sequential methods are employed to monitor trials and estimate sample sizes.

With many tables and figures, this book enables readers to conduct a Bayesian analysis for a large variety of interesting and practical biomedical problems. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars first Bayesian book on diagnostic medicine
Lyle Broemeling was a Professor at the prestigious Biostatistics Unit in the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center at University of Texas in Houston. He retired this year and I had the good fortune to meet him and talk with him at the JSM in Salt Lake City in August 2007.In my recent job at UBC I had the assignment to help out an imaging company that determines the status of a subjects cancer tumor in a double blinded placebo controlled trial. We had the job of helping them write the imagong data charter abd helped to construct rules for evaluating the reader quality.I wish I had the book when I was working on that problem.

To my knowledge this is the first book written about statistical techniques in the medical diagnosis area that is written exclusively in the Bayesian framework. The author makes a very good point for the Bayesian approach. He sees many applications where data from earlier trials of similar content can be incorporated. The Bayesian approach incorporates it naturally in the prior distribution.A comparable classical approach would have to be some form of meta-analysis and would be awkward and very unnatural.

The book has a very enjoyable reading style and in the first three chapters provides an overall introduction and basic ideas about diagnostic medical and procedures. Chapter four provides a basic introduction to Bayesian method. He also introduces the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method for implementing the more sophisticated Bayesian procedures and he discusses the Winbugs software that is the most commonly used and well debugged freeware available to students and researchers.MCMC has applications in other areas but Bayesian statistics is one of the most commonly used area of application for statisticians and was the motivation for the developers in England.

The rest of the book deals with the applications in diagnostic medicine and includes techniques for evaluating the accuracy of the diagnostic tool under study in a clinical trial let's say.It also includes methods for evaluating the degree of agreement or disagreement among those radiologists assigned to read the images.

The author does not go into the frequentist approach to diagnostic medicine but he does reference two excellent texts that use the classical (frequentist) approach.

I definitely recommend this book to anyone with a curiosity or interest in finding applications of Bayesian methods and especially those that have a practical interest but not a strong background instatistics or Bayesian statistic methods. ... Read more

As far as a statistics book goes, this is downright awful. Some concepts are presented in as little as one sentence which should really be expanded upon. This was a required textbook for my graduate level biostats class. After reading some of the chapters and still not being able to complete the problems, I finally gave up and only used it to get the problems I had to do for homework.I used a combination of a different statistics textbook and the internet to complete the problems.Other students in my class complained about this book as well.

1-0 out of 5 stars Warning: Text contains many errors
+ Note: This review was originally written for another book from this author, but touches on my experience with this text as well.

It is mind-boggling how one can have so many mistakes in a textbook like this. This book was required for our Biostatistics II class, and I am really displeased by all of the mistakes. What is the worst offense is that some of the answers for test questions are wrong. For example, the one way ANOVA problem 7.21 has the wrong F-statistic: the wrong answer. Others in the class have complained about this text as well. This is simply amazing to me, and leaves me not trusting much of the text in this book.

His other book "Health and Numbers" is just as terrible; the professor that used that book for class made a list of the mistakes they found, and us students in that class found many more along the way. I ran into another statistics book that takes all of the procedures step-by-step and really made it simple for me. This book, and his other are not recommended. ... Read more

One of the best texts I've come across on the subject. Lucid, clearly set out with plenty of worked examples. Not too rigorous for the beginner, yet contains enough mathematical detail for the basic concepts to beunderstood. Examples, problems and worked examples are highly relevant toreal problems in biological data analysis. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The easiest beginners biostatistics book
I was trying to find the book for residents and students. I can believe that it is out of print! It was the only book I could find in many years that could be used to learn biostatitics on your own. It was easy, fun andit did not treat you as a dummy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most user-friendly introductory stats book ever!
This book is fun and interesting, and not nearly as scary as the rest. It doesn't rely on lots of math, and it presents basic concepts in a way that regular people can understand. I recommend it to everyone I know who (1)doesn't know much about stats but (2) finds they need to do somethingstatistical.

It breaks my heart that it's out of print, because I washoping they'd write a whole series of books! ... Read more
