Product Description
This book is devoted to pseudo-holomorphic curve methods in symplectic geometry. It contains an introduction to symplectic geometry and relevant techniques of Riemannian geometry, proofs of Gromov's compactness theorem, an investigation of local properties of holomorphic curves, including positivity of intersections, and applications to Lagrangian embeddings problems. The chapters are based on a series of lectures given previously by the authors M. Audin, A. Banyaga, P. Gauduchon, F. Labourie, J. Lafontaine, F. Lalonde, Gang Liu, D. McDuff, M.-P. Muller, P. Pansu, L. Polterovich, J.C. Sikorav. In an attempt to make this book accessible also to graduate students, the authors provide the necessary examples and techniques needed to understand the applications of the theory. The exposition is essentially self-contained and includes numerous exercises. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Worst calculus resource I could find
Book should be banned and publisher sued for hours lost because the book exists. The book doesn't teach very well, wasted hours finding other books that actually explained calculus.Doesn't even make a decent review book if you learned calc before.Wasted more time looking for author's email address to tell him what a waste of paper he produced.Doesn't speak well for any teacher that would use it either.College is hard enough without poor material like this making it harder. The only reason I didn't give it 1 star was that I wanted the review to be taken seriously.

5-0 out of 5 stars good book
Wasn't very thrilled to get the book its calculus. But it came in a couple days and book was in promised condition which was new.

Bought several books from this dealer and did not have any problems what so ever.

4-0 out of 5 stars Technical Calculus with Analytic Geometry by Peter Kuhfittig
This is a great textbook for first timers learning calculus or just as a refresher for the basic concpets. The author Peter Kuhfittig keeps all the concepts together and doesn't bog down the reader with extremely long mathematically definitions. He gives the reader example problems and then plenty of problems to work. The only recommendation I would make to the author is to put every odd problem's solution or some even problem solutions in the solutions manual since they (even problems) or usually the harder problems to work out anyway. Only every other odd problem's solution is in the "Solutions Manual".

1-0 out of 5 stars Find a different book
For an expensive book such as this one, you would expect the author to explain the concepts in greater detail.Unfortunately, he doesn't and that is why I am looking elsewhere for an explanation of the material. Also, there are not enough useful examples in the book.If you are looking for abook that explains the concepts in detail and gives an ample amount ofexamples, save yourself the time and money by purchasing another book. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars overall, pretty good book
The book did have some irritating mistakes in the back (no more than the average math book), but I give it a thumbs up for being pretty clear and readable throughout. Some problems I had using the book though are:

-it doesn't provide adequate examples, too few and not on the same level as the problems
-towards the end, it loses some coherence by splitting up related ideas into many formulas and notations.

Overall word, the book teaches pretty well, but a good teacher is really needed to wade through some of the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars ehhhh
i am using this book in my cal 3 class at this very moment. there are many mistakes in the text and the answers in the back of the book are sometimes wrong or they are factored in a weird way. the text is very easy tounderstand and with all it's shortcomings i dig this book ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Non-Fiction
A basic first year university textbook, about just what it says.

I suppose this one is likely no better or no worse than any of the others, and has probably had a whole bunch of other editions since that are still no better or no worse, for something that won't change much bar software used.

3-0 out of 5 stars A little dull
This book has a few upsides, it is thorough, lots of problems to work on.But the text is a bore to get through. Not very personal.I guess I prefer the more touchy feely texts.Probably only used at URI.I came across this book as I was going through some junk.I found some old tests that I did well on, but had no clue how to do any problmes (even the ones I got right!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Text
As a survivor of Calculus I and Calculus II, and I mean that literally, I have nothing but praise for this text. The text is clear and concise. The illustrations are sharp.

This text is not as splashy as some texts, butit is very, very competent. The only negative feature of the book, was whenI took my MTH141 (Calculus I) class at URI; my professor was Mr. Fraleigh.Unfortunately, when questions arose; the book could not shed a newperspective on the reviewed material. ... Product Description
Emphasizing applications, Zill introduces the difficult concepts of calculus by using intuitive and concrete examples to motivate student interest. All trigonometric functions are introduced and used in one chapter, and there is optional coverage of epsilon delta definitions to allow for flexibility in the teaching of the course. In the second edition, most of the 6500 exercise sets have been expanded, a section on vectors in two dimensions is added, cycloidal curves and a thorough discussion of motion of weight on spring is included. The text has an increased emphasis on the use of computers, added to sections on Newton's Method, Riemann Sums and approximate integration. "Remarks" sections warn students of potential pitfalls and point out milestones in the historical development of calculus. The appendices contain a thorough review of basic maths, complex numbers and determinants. Important pre-calculus topics are reviewed in the first chapter. This book should be of interest to diploma and undergraduate students of calculus. ... Read more

Product Description

Both classical geometry and modern differential geometry have been active subjects of research throughout the 20th century and lie at the heart of many recent advances in mathematics and physics. The underlying motivating concept for the present book is that it offers readers the elements of a modern geometric culture by means of a whole series of visually appealing unsolved (or recently solved) problems that require the creation of concepts and tools of varying abstraction. Starting with such natural, classical objects as lines, planes, circles, spheres, polygons, polyhedra, curves, surfaces, convex sets, etc., crucial ideas and above all abstract concepts needed for attaining the results are elucidated. These are conceptual notions, each built "above" the preceding and permitting an increase in abstraction, represented metaphorically by Jacob's ladder with its rungs: the 'ladder' in the Old Testament, that angels ascended and descended...

In all this, the aim of the book is to demonstrate to readers the unceasingly renewed spirit of geometry and that even so-called "elementary" geometry is very much alive and at the very heart of the work of numerous contemporary mathematicians. It is also shown that there are innumerable paths yet to be explored and concepts to be created. The book is visually rich and inviting, so that readers may open it at random places and find much pleasure throughout according their own intuitions and inclinations.

Marcel Berger is the author of numerous successful books on geometry, this book once again is addressed to all students and teachers of mathematics with an affinity for geometry.

Product Description
Ever since the introduction by Rao in 1945 of the Fisher information metric on a family of probability distributions there has been interest among statisticians in the application of differential geometry to statistics. This interest has increased rapidly in the last couple of decades with the work of a large number of researchers. Until now an impediment to the spread of these ideas into the wider community of statisticians is the lack of a suitable text introducing the modern co-ordinate free approach to differential geometry in a manner accessible to statisticians. This book aims to fill this gap. The authors bring to the book extensive research experience in differential geometry and its application to statistics. The book commences with the study of the simplest differential manifolds - affine spaces and their relevance to exponential families and passes into the general theory, the Fisher information metric, the Amari connection and asymptotics. It culminates in the theory of the vector bundles, principle bundles and jets and their application to the theory of strings - a topic presently at the cutting edge of research in statistics and differential geometry. ... Product Description
This is a comprehensive treatment of Minkowski geometry. The author begins by describing the fundamental metric properties and the topological properties of existence of Minkowski space. This is followed by a treatment of two-dimensional spaces and characterizations of Euclidean space among normed spaces. The central three chapters present the theory of area and volume in normed spaces--a fascinating geometrical interplay among the various roles of the ball in Euclidean space.Later chapters deal with trigonometry and differential geometry in Minkowski spaces. The book ends with a brief look at J. J. Schaffer's ideas on the intrinsic geometry of the unit sphere. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars plainly lucid
Had this book in my calculus courses as a first and a second year college student. One of the best university text books I owned in my entire undergrad curriculum. It is graphically (geometrically) explicit and the analytical content are very lucid. It was almost a culture shock because I had never been able to understand calculus with confidence before this book.It has now been 15 years since then, but I still refer to the book from time to time. ... Product Description
This mathematically challenging and precise text covers trigonometric and logarithmic functions, and differential equations early, with Numerical methods gathered in a single chapter. Applications of the integral precede techniques of integration and include probability distributions, areas, volumes and length, areas of surfaces of rotation, work and fluid pressure. Problem sets are large, well-graded and cover a wide range of applications, including optional computer exercises. Coverage of moments of continuously distributed masses is delayed until the multivariable chapter, where multivariable differential calculus is divided into two and three variables, and one primarily with differentiability and its consequences. Tables of integration and their use has a special section in the coverage of techniques of integration, and the coverage of vector field theory is thoroughly and carefully presented. This book should be of interest to degree and diploma students on calculus courses in departments of mathematics, engineering or physical sciences; a background in algebra and trigonometry is a prerequisite. ...
