5-0 out of 5 stars Does the trick
If you are looking for a brief overview of Algebra, this will be helpful.I've been out of school 20+ years and needed to brush up on Algebra for another course, and this was what I needed without being overkill.

5-0 out of 5 stars College Algebra
I am takeing algebra in college and this book is an excellent help. I highly recomend this book to anyone who needs help with algebra.

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete, authoritative
Grinding through several chapters, working through hundreds of problems, Schaum's is the "boot camp" of math books!Rigorous, terse and complete, this is a workbook for grown-ups.
No fancy pictures or distracting sidelines profiling contemporary events or historical mathematicians here! What you get is a thorough review of every possible algebra problem you can think of, organized in an intelligent, mathematical way.Especially rigorous was the chapter on Polynomial Functions, which is often given a superficial treatment in many textbooks (!).Here, you learn how to solve polynomial equations, using Descartes' Rule of Signs, Integral and Rational root Theorems, Approximation, and an especially nice section on complex and irrational roots!Doing this chapter alone forced me to review operations with complex numbers (in the book), quadratic formula (in the book, of course),
and other topics.I solved all 76 problems in a period of 2 weeks. It was one of the best and thorough math-learning experiences I've ever had. Thanks, Schaum's!

4-0 out of 5 stars Schaum's Outline for College Algebra
The Schaum's Outline came faster than what was listed for delivery dates. The book had hand written notes on a few pages, but it was in pencil.Overall, the book was in good condition as posted by the seller.

5-0 out of 5 stars Schaum's Outlines
These books have been a part of my education and the education of others since my college days (and before). They are designed for students who desire a very different and far simpler approach. I often recommend them to others who are having difficulty in one of the many fields they cover. I have always been quite impressed with the way that they take any student into the details while keeping things as simple as possible, giving many problems to solve with solutions to all problems. ... Amazon.com Review
If you need help with algebra, this unique book is designed for you. Full of engaging stories and practical explanations, Head First Algebra will help you learn everything from natural numbers to exponents to solving systems of equations and graphing polynomials.

Right after you tell someone that you’re writing a math book, that’s what half the people tell you.Why is that? You never hear somebody say “I’m not a history person.” They’ll just say “I don’t like history.”It says to me that people think it’s something wrong with them, not the subject.

Why is that important? Because it means that helping learners struggling with math is equal parts working on the material and working on the learner. In order to really get the learner engaged, you first have to fix the math issues that they have.

Where do math issues come from?

Math study is sequential.
If you have problem with understanding a concept with addition, then you’re going to have trouble with subtraction and multiplication. So if you have a problem with Algebra, it’s going to follow you through Geometry, Algebra 2, Trigonometry, and the fact is that unless you go back and relearn the concept that is missing, there will be problems showing up in your work and it will be really hard to find the root cause.

Through elementary school, here’s how math progresses:

Pretty intuitive in the beginning (adding and subtracting you can do with blocks and it makes total sense).

Then “math” goes into the land of times tables, division, more multiplication (this time with two places), more division (this time with two places), and it tends to get...well...Boring! So by the time you start Algebra, you’re already saying, "I'm not a math person."
The problem is that Algebra is where mathematics really starts, although a bunch of people are already turned off. In Algebra you’re learning how to apply logic, how to construct a real problem in the math world, and seeking a solution to things that you can’t do in your head. You can write out the situation as you know it, and following Algebraic principles, get to the answer. The answer is something that you can actually use.You learn the process and understand the relationship that the equation, inequality, functions, or graph represents; and how to manipulate it.
EVERYBODY is a math person; you just might not know it yet. Doesn’t mean that everybody is going to love it, go out and become a math major, but it means that everyone can work with math and use it out there in the world. Because you’ll need to. Unless you plan to never spend any money or put anything together with tools, you’re going to need math to help you. And there is no reason why everyone can’t get there. They just have to start by thinking they can.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
I bought this book for my daughter. She is in grade 8.She read the book from the begining to the end.Head First books are her favorite books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for reviewing alegbra
This book is good refresher for those who been away from school for many years. It give good examples throughout the book to help you undertstand key formulas. It makes you use papaer and pencil without the use of a calculator which in the long run is a blessing. I've used this book along with a college textbook and it has allowed me the chance to succeed in class. This book really is a A+++.

4-0 out of 5 stars great for college students
I generally review books for the homeschool market up through twelfth grade, so I first looked at this as a possibility for use in high school. While it covers the material for an Algebra 1 course just fine, the presentation tends to limit the audience to college and young adults.
The book uses lots of life situations within which problems and their solutions are presented. The life situations include, for example, computing the costs of bringing along a group of friends on a road trip to a concert, determining amounts of ingredients to make punch for a New Year's party, determining placement of a water balloon catapult for frat warfare, and computing costs of operating a profitable lawn business. All of these are addressed to a young adult rather than high school audience.
The style of the presentation is very engaging, especially for those who appreciate all the extra visuals--arrows, and "scibbled" notes to explain things that a teacher might be mentioning in a classroom situation, very casual and direct language, photos of real people commenting in cartoon bubbles on the lesson content, crossword puzzles for practice and review, and more graphics than you generally find in an algebra text.
Those who haven't studied math for a few years will likely appreciate the review of pre-algebra 63-page section at the back of the book. The pre-algebra is presented in manner similar to the rest of the book, but students can refer to this section as needed... or not.
Solutions are included, and no teacher instruction is required, so Head First Algebra really works well for a student working totally independently.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best, but someone needed to edit for ERRORS
On a Thursday I found out I needed to take a college placement test on Monday and this test included higher math, including Algebra, which I hadn't studied in 30 year.

I hit the local Barnes & Noble and came home with three books on Algebra, and over the next 2.5 days worked through a good chunk of all of them, allowing me to do some good side-by-side comparisons.

I liked the verbose teaching style and constant use of fairly realistic examples in this book. I like that they explain some things that other books just assume you know, and therefore don't mention.

I like all the "hand-written" side notes and arrows and diagrams, and the contrived "discussions" after many topics; all these help get you thinking and remembering what you've just read, and worked on.

This book is the closest thing to being in a classroom. I say this, because many of the notes and arrows, which I just referred to, are similar to questions and answers that would probably take place in real classroom after a teacher introduced one of these topics. For example, after introducing linear graphing, a teacher would certain get questions like "But what's the point of doing this? What does it accomplish?". This book spends lots of time answering questions like these, really helping you understand that topic and answering lots of questions that would probably come up in your own mind as well.

I would give this book a better rating but they really missed the mark in one area: accuracy. Early on in the book I found several errors in the answer that really discouraged me. I thought I had misunderstood a topic and went back over the material several times till I finally just concluded they'd gotten it wrong.

This is not acceptable, folks. It's clear that LOTS of work went into this book, couldn't a little time have been spent making sure the answers were correct?

3-0 out of 5 stars Incorrect Solutions!
I purchased this book to prepare for my first semester back to college at 10 years away.Math was never my strongest suit but I will need a significant amount of math courses to get through my degree.

A couple pages into the book it became clear that I was rustier than I had originally thought.I was going to give up on it and then I saw there was a pre-algebra review in an appendix, so I worked though it.It was the perfect pace for a refresher and I easily transitioned into chapter one.

I followed the instructions and worked in the book prior to going to sleep so the info would stick (and as a result I ended up dreaming about math every night), and the left brain activities were perfect to release the tension in my brain and enabled me to cover more material each evening.

That said, after just working through the pre-algebra appendix and chapters 1 & 2, I have already come across three incorrect solutions presented in the book, two of which were in the pre-algebra fractions review, which is a scary and frustrating subject for a lot of people.I was on the verge of tears because I thought I just was too dumb to understand fractions, before I realized the error was in the book, not in my math.

Also some of the problems are a little bit convoluted and don't really fit the lesson they are trying to teach.

As much as I love the set-up, style and pace of this book, incorrect answers are inexcusable. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars mystery and math
This is a juvenile mystery written with math clues. The heroine is a math whiz in school and applies mathematical principles to most everything. It uses Venn Diagrams, Parallel Lines, and the Additive Property of Equality to solve a possible murder. It gives young readers an intriguing approach to math.

2-0 out of 5 stars More gimmick than tale.
The idea is an interesting one: create a story based on math concepts. Much of the time, though, it seemed like the story was being twisted around so that a math concept could be inserted. Worse, the author couldn't resist waxing didactic about other things, like what the Bill of Rights is.

I agree with the reviewer who said that Tess isn't particularly likeable. She's unkind to others, she's full of herself, and she snidely explains very simple math concepts to her parents (like what a negative number is and the difference between a line segment and a line). For some reason, her parents have never heard these things before and are amazed.

Some of the math concepts introduced in the book are very simple (the meaning of > and < is taught in the primary grades). Others are very complex. The book will not really explain much about math concepts for struggling students, though it is an interesting idea.

I also agree with those who said that the plot elements were all pinched off at the end with quick and not-very-satisfying solutions. And these solutions are achieved by other people, not the protagonist.

One last peeve. As a teacher myself, I'm always annoyed by authors who are not teachers telling us what they think "good teaching" is. Invariably they seem to think a good teacher is one who imparts buckets of facts all the time (for example, the history teacher in the book rattling off facts about the Bill of Rights). This is not true. A good teacher is generally one who enables her students to *interact* with facts and concepts and to construct their own knowledge.

1-0 out of 5 stars Inappropriate for 9 year olds!
My daughter wanted this book, so I bought it for her for her birthday.I was very disappointed when a few pages into it she asked me what Suicide was! That topic is not appropriate and way too depressing for a nine year old!

5-0 out of 5 stars Reading AND Math are cool in Middle School
As the School-wide Language Arts Chair of a large middle school, I am always looking for books that will hook our kids.Secrets, Lies, and Algebra offers an interesting look into the 8th grade year of all students who are trying to find themselves in a world of mazes of friendships and family relationships. Most of the plot was believable in the middle school world. I particularly liked the "math" reasoning at the basis of the central plot. For those students who LOVE math and worry about reading a novel, this book offers a way to look at the universe in mathematical terms.Although I felt that the last few chapters left some gaps that were intended to be filled in by a sequel, the novel moved well, stuck to its format of offering each problem as an algebraic equation, and resolved the mysteries of the book cleanly and appropriately.I will certainly offer this title as an example of "reading across the curriculum" to all of the math teachers in my building. In short, the reader + the book = an interesting story line.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun read
I bought this for my daughter.Okay - I had to force it on her.She began laughing by the end of the first chapter and said she learned more about Algebra from the book than from her own school.Ms. Lichtman has done the unthinkable - used algebra to describe the angst of eighth grade and all the ensuing politics involved.

I read it and it is laugh-out-loud funny. The illustrations bring the points home.

A must have for anyone looking for a quick, fun read (and a great way to sneak in some math that is otherwise uncomprehensible in some academic environments!)

Bravo. This book is a winner! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars helpful!!!
Well, am a college student and i had never be good at math. I was having some problems in understanding some exercises so my teacher mentioned about this book and i can say that it helped me a lot to understand and do well on the course. Right now i'm still taking math courses (advanced algreba) and i refer to this great book when i forget something. I strongly recommend this book to everyone who is looking to improve their skills, have more practice or understand better. This book is great tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Happy
I purchased this book to makea quick review of Math and help my son. I am so happy that I will buy the entire collection from elementary Algebra to Calculus includingDifferencial equations, Geometry and Trigonometry. Great help for those who need a solid foundation in Math. You can't go wrong with Schaum's Outline.

3-0 out of 5 stars Satisfied for my current level, but...
while I agree with what everyone above has said, Ill add that the series of Schaum's have helped me tremendously. IF you have a basic understanding of the concepts and need reviewing, then this might be for you.. however as a newbie, I cannot recommend a book that is consistently filled with errors. Everything said above by other reviewers is correct; compact, easy to carry, lightweight, concise, to the point, tons of problems... they simply leave out that there are page after page, in some spurts, many errors. I am at about pre-calculus level, have used Schaums Outline of Arithmetic, this book here, and purchased their Outline of Precalculus edition awhile ago. Im strictly using these books for reviewing and their inaccuracy concerns me.. for example, when I arrive at the Calc level or higher where Im probably not going to be sure of what Im doing and I need something cheap, fast, full with problems and accurate.. I don't think I will be using Schaums as I don't want to be mislead with incorrect worked out problems. For review, if you have some experience, YES use these books - definately; you can work fast and the information is packed and it's cheap! If you have no clue about the subject at hand, don't buy them. I am for Schaums technique and presentation, but their accuracy must improve... I guess that the saying holds true, 'you get what you pay for'.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best book for studying mathematics
This book is suitable for both bad and good students at mathematics. Firstly, each category is explained easily but briefly. Secondly, there are many questions, so you can get used to each category and can solve many questions quickly. For another thing, this book is so compact that you can bring anywhere you go and read it. Finally but the most importantly, this book is excellent for people using English as a mother tongue. It is because my mother tongue is Japanese.

5-0 out of 5 stars It goes directly to the point. There are not excesive words.
I have been teaching since 1980 and I have been following Schaum's Collection also since I was a College student. Now, I am teaching Math at Mission High School in San Francisco and I have noticed that many of theexercises (maybe all of them) give students the increasingly maturity tobecome selfconfidents in math. Product Description
The New York Times bestseller-from the author of Math Doesn't Suck-teaches girls how to kick pre-algebra butt

In her New York Times bestselling books, actress and math genius Danica McKellar shatters the "math nerd" stereotype and gives girls the tools to ace middle-school math in her unique, just-us-girls style. Now, in her second book, Kiss My Math, McKellar empowers a new crop of girls-seventh to ninth graders-to tackle the next level of mathematics: pre-algebra.

Stepping up not only the math but the sass and style, McKellar helps math-phobic teenagers chill out and finally "get" negative numbers, variables, absolute values, exponents, and more. As she did so effectively in Math Doesn't Suck, McKellar uses personality quizzes, reader polls, real-life testimonials, and stories from her own life-in addition to clear instruction, helpful tips, and practice problems-revealing why pre-algebra is easier, more relevant, and more glamorous than girls think. McKellar is clearly reaching her audience: parents, teachers, and especially girls are asking for more. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Use for Instruction incarcerated women
I use Math Doesn't Suck and Kiss My Math to teach math to women who are incarcerated at the Federal Prison Camp (FPC) north of Phoenix. My students range in age from 18 years to the mid-sixties. All of the women in my classes have already acquired either a high school diploma or a GED degree. Unfortunately, many of them have forgotten much of the math that they once knew; so they need a "math refresher course."

Many FPC inmates want to improve their math skills, because, while they are incarcerated at FPC, they have the opportunity to participate in The College Program, which was initiated about 13 years ago by Professor Peg Bortner of Arizona State University. The College Program offers college level courses in cooperation with Rio Salado College [a Maricopa County, Arizona, community college] in a "distance learning" format. The students acquire college credits from Rio, which they may transfer to almost any other community college or to a university after their release from FPC. A woman whose sentence keeps her at FPC long enough may even earn one or more associate degrees.

Rio requires every incoming student to sit for a series of proficiency examinations, one of which is a math exam. The other exams are not serious obstacles for most of our students, but the math exam is another story. Many of our students do not achieve on their first attempt a score that is sufficiently high to permit them to register for a college level math course. The intent of our "math refresher course," which uses Math Doesn't Suck and Kiss My Math as the textbooks for the course, is to get them over that hurdle.

There is no charge for the course. We provide our students with all of the supplies they need at no charge and lend them the books that Changing Hands Bookstore, an independent local bookstore in Tempe, kindly sells to us at a reduced price.

Our students greatly appreciate both Math Doesn't Suck and Kiss My Math, which are much more than just math books: they are also great confidence builders. For many of our students, these are perhaps the only math books they have ever truly liked. Consequently, we let each student who completes the course choose one of the books to keep as her own. We wish that we could let them keep both, but our limited resources do not permit us to do so.

Sincerely yours,

Karnavalo

5-0 out of 5 stars Danica = great role model, better math teacher
Like her first book ("Math Doesn't Suck"), "Kiss My Math" is an epic win. I was eleven when I first read Danica's books, and they changed my whole perspective on math. I'm now thirteen and I love my algebra class.

"Kiss My Math" doesn't just help girls understand math, it helps them embrace it. There are real-life testimonies, quizzes, statistics, and other engaging materials in addition to the crystal-clear lessons. You will be walked through the steps of each problem, but not babied and never put down.

Danica emphasizes the importance of not dumbing yourself down and always being the best that you can. Even if you weren't born to be a math whiz, any of Danica's books are guaranteed to imnprove your outlook and your grades, and give you something else even more valuable: self-confidence.

1-0 out of 5 stars dishonest seller!
Hello,

I'd like to report that this seller is dishonest and disresponsible. I ordered a textbook from her on Sep. 20, and haven't received the book until Oct. 3. I connected her one week later, but he/she didn't respond. It has caused me do not have a textbook for my math class now; so, do not buy anything from this seller!

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes Algebra Fun...Within Reason
"As long as there is algebra, there will be prayer in schools." This being said, Blitzer's texts are great. Appreciated by students and instructors alike for their comprehensive and clear explanations of algebraic principles. Contemporary real life examples lend interest to sections. Study tip boxes, explanatory voice balloons, checkpoint examples, exercise sets and end of chapter review guides make success at algebra almost painless for anyone who is willing to do the work. My only suggestion...make chapter summaries downloadable or available on the enclosed cd.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just as described
The book cAme very quickly. Just as described. Few highlight marks and bent cover, but for the price, can't beat it!
Thanks alot!

1-0 out of 5 stars Too much Schtick
Just when you were pondering "hmmmmm....math books aren't funny enough," Robert Blitzer saved the day. Blitzer even condensed the long examples. Solving problems. 2x(3-4)= 26x(gasp!)

Wonderful book, not annoying in the least bit. I've always said, math is just so cold and calculated, it needs a clown! Thank you, Robert Blitzer.

"Lang's Algebra changed the way graduate algebra is taught, retaining classical topics but introducing language and ways of thinking from category theory and homological algebra. It has affected all subsequent graduate-level algebra books." - NOTICES OF THE AMS"The author has an impressive knack for presenting the important and interesting ideas of algebra in just the "right" way, and he never gets bogged down in the dry formalism which pervades some parts of algebra."- MATHEMATICAL REVIEWS

This book is intended as a basic text for a one-year course in algebra at the graduate level, or as a useful reference for mathematicians and professionals who use higher-level algebra. It successfully addresses the basic concepts of algebra. For the revised third edition, the author has added exercises and made numerous corrections to the text. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Terrible first algebra book
After having it used as my undergraduate algebra text, I hated algebra for about 15 years. Absolutely NO motivation or "genetic" understanding of the material. If you DO know the subject already, the book has many of the slickest proofs, so a good book for the professional, terrible book for instruction. Oh, another thing: if you want to know how to actually go about computing some algebraic object (eg, Jordan canonical form, Smith normal form, etc), do NOT try to find the answer in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive book, great for reference.
This book covers a very wide variety of topics in algebra, and has lots of exercises. It is a great book for reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable reference, but not perfect
Lang's Algebra is a very broad reference in abstract algebra: most subfields are at least mentioned, and there is a wealth of detail on many important topics. Overall, Lang's writing is clear and his exposition makes sense. The sheer quantity of information contained in this book, however, forces Lang into a less-than-logical general organization. His index makes up for that to a large extent, and this book is probably best used as a reference. Of course, Algebra makes an excellent reference and complement to any survey course in abstract algebra, because of its clarity and comprehensiveness.

That said, there are a few caveats that I would like to mention. Lang's terminology is nonstandard (eg "entire ring" for what other authors call an "integral domain"), and these accumulated idiosyncrasies become increasingly irritating as one reads through the book. Second, don't expect many applications. I found this to be a problem in Galois theory in particular, where Lang's exposition is completely clear and easy to understand, but seemingly pointless. He neglects even the classical and fairly abstract applications, like the Galois theorem, and he leaves infinite-dimensional Galois theory as an exercise. Now, there are not many applications in general in this book, so be aware that the clarity of Lang's exposition comes at a certain cost (ie, Lang never gets bogged down in too many examples or minor points). Third, Lang occasionally uses notation that he never defines and that does not appear in the index.

In summary, this is a wonderful general reference for algebra, but not a substitute for more specialized or more elementary textbooks in specific subfields, especially Galois theory. The best way to take advantage of Lang's clear, abstract exposition is to make a real effort to come up with examples on your own and use Lang for the general case. I wouldn't rely only on Lang's exercises either: they don't cover as much as you might want them to, but the ones that Lang does include are challenging and important.

5-0 out of 5 stars successfully understanding the foundations of algebra
Having faced the challenges of learning algebra in college, I found this book online and bought it -and the workbook- as a supplement to my course assigned textbook. I was really impressed at how easy I could comprehend the intended subject matter as I had struggled with it on previous occasions. I really liked the format of the book and how the examples were lain out. I recommend it to anyone learning this subject :)

5-0 out of 5 stars I love the entire A-Plus series
I always use the A-Plus series (Beginning Algebra: Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1; Algebra: Algebra 2 and Pre-Calculus; SAT Math) in tutoring. They contain very helpful examples and thousands of exercises with answers.

They are perfect for reviewing middle-school and high-school math and SAT I/II math.

They can also be used by students preparing for the AMC and other math competitions.

US schools always take back students' textbooks when the school year is over. Why not get the A-Plus series as backup math textbooks?

2-0 out of 5 stars Too full of waffle
1020 pages for a 1 year introductory algebra 1 course?Outrageous and with a price to match. The "friendly" marginal notes and "interesting" boxes make the book slow to navigate. It almost assumes that the student does not have access to a teacher who knows what he is talking about and that they are willing to devote 100% of their time to wading through this vast tome.
A decent teacher - public, private or home school - and a Cliffs Notes would be a better option than this paperweight.

Product Description
Kaufmann and Schwitters have built this text's reputation on clear and concise exposition, numerous examples, and plentiful problem sets. This traditional text consistently reinforces the following common thread: learn a skill; practice the skill to help solve equations; and then apply what you have learned to solve application problems. This simple, straightforward approach has helped many students grasp and apply fundamental problem solving skills necessary for future mathematics courses. Algebraic ideas are developed in a logical sequence, and in an easy-to-read manner, without excessive vocabulary and formalism. The open and uncluttered design helps keep students focused on the concepts while minimizing distractions. Problems and examples reference a broad range of topics, as well as career areas such as electronics, mechanics, and health, showing students that mathematics is part of everyday life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Rate the book not the shipping!
This is a fine book for students who want a stiff course in algebra. The book is challenging and holds no punches in its level of difficulty. However, the student who takes the time to do the problems and read some of the examples will have the algebra that they need for pre-calculus, trigonometry, or calculus.Rational expressions, logarithms, difficult factoring problems, quadratic equations, conic sections, difference quotients, and radicals equations are all present in this book.It is the lack of mastery of these concepts that hold students back in their calculus classes.Blitzer will call your bluff if you are lacking and get you up to speed.

To the other reviewers:Stop rating the shipping of this book!!!!This is just foolish.Rate the book!I am so sick and tired of erroneous rating on amazon!

5-0 out of 5 stars It's all been said: Great book!
It's all already been said: this is a great book if you're looking to thoroughly learn the material yourself, rather than be given proofs. It forces you to prove fundamental ideas for the development of the theory, providing definitions and guidance. It's absolutely full of relevant exercises.
I really liked the style of the book. It felt more like a mathematical discussion rather than a lesson. This was partly due to the many exercises immediately following each definition or theorems, rather than being chunked all at the end of the chapter. I didn't feel like I was being talked down to, which I think is deserved for getting through the exercises myself.
However, it was exactly for these reasons that my boyfriend didn't like the book, so be aware that it just might not be your cup of tea. It's worth trying out, though, considering the low price.

4-0 out of 5 stars a good book
This book itemizes the related theorems and covers most major results. It would be better if some definitions have some more detailed examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Supplement
I recommend this book for all who are taking undergraduate Abstract Algebra. The book gives clear explanation of most of the concepts taught in class. Another great thing about this book is that it includes definitions and explanations of terms that are usually not discussed in class. This is a must have for math majors!

4-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT READ THIS PLEASE!IT COULD SAVE LIVES!
I think I bought this book only because it had that neat Moor Methodesque presentation. And because I like to buy math books. And because it was cheap.

So far so good, though I can't say that it differs particularly from any standard text on algebra. It's not big enough to be Lang. Not terse enough to by Hungerford. And not comprehensive enough to be Dummit and Foote.
It also costs about a fifth of the price of any of those and has a neat do-it-yourself kind of methodology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book on Algebra

5-0 out of 5 stars One of about 3 "best texts" on this in 2000
Good for 2nd course. First would be perhaps Saunders MacLane , Algebra, or Herstein, Topics in Algebra.

What is so great about these newer books is more examples worked out and more exercises. I love to work the exercises -- I learn as much from that as from the lectures and regular homework.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great
Abstract algebra is an inherently abstract, formal, non-intuitive subject, and while it can be made less difficult, it cannot be made easy. Gallian's book is a valiant attempt at the latter. The book shies away from precise definitions, formal proofs, and that elusive thing known as "mathematical maturity." However, abstract algebra simply cannot be satisfactorily taught without at least a minimum of these things, and is best taught in as formal of an environment as possible. As such, I cannot recommend Gallian's book to those who wish to learn abstract algebra on a late undergraduate/beginning graduate level. However, for the advanced high school student who wishes to study abstract algebra early, Gallian's book is excellent in that it does not presume that the student has had much prior exposure to advanced mathematics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for an Easy Start!
This is a great textbook for an introduction to group theory, however, it's not the textbook you want if you want a strong foundation. That's what Dummit and Foote is for.

For the price (used), it was very reasonable, and a nice addition to my collection of math texts.

1-0 out of 5 stars One of the worst Abstract Algebra Books ever
This book actually develops very little math in its chapters , while throwing some very difficult problems at the reader. It is really surprising that in order to read an essential theorem like Cayley's Theorem (page 126) one is referred back to Exercise 23 , and to Exercise 9.Can't Dr Gallian have at least one self-contained Proof?? I can see that maybe he wants to make the student think , but the book has plenty of exercises for that purpose!Example 14 on page 208 is also very revealing. Here Dr Gallian talks about a very important isomorphism, but he just mentions a lot of facts without proof in the body of his proof!!!Really amazing! What can a student seeing this stuff for the first time learn from this example?? Beyond the bad presentation here are some major defects :
1.Compared to other popular Algebra textbooks used these days in the U.S , the Exercises are very difficult.I made comparisons to 3 other popular textbooks. The Exercises are harder than "A First Course In Abstract Algebra" by Fraleigh. It is harder than "Elements of Modern Algebra" by Gilbert and Gilbert , and finally it is harder than "Abstract Algebra" by Blair and Beachy.
2.It is well known to Undergraduate Educators like myself , that most students who are in undergrad math programs have no intention of going to Graduate School in Mathematics. For most of these folks it was a Shock to learn that the Undergraduate Abstract Algebra Course has a lot to do with proofs , and little with Computations. This book just adds to this Shock. It is certainly not in tune with current academic reality facing Abstract Algebra Instructors, due to the fact that it expects too much from the student.
3.In recent editions the book has become more and more applications oriented. This is completely unneccessary , and I really do not know what Dr Gallian is trying to accomplish here.
4.It seems to me that Dr Gallian has had the same approach one would have when writing a Calculus textbook: But this approach does not work in a hard subject like Abstract Algebra .This Book does not provide any insights into the actual thought processes that are required in constructing airtight Abstract Algebra Proofs. Throughout the book, one is constantly left with the question "So what are the important problems and techniques?"Dr Gallian's approach would have been perfectly OK if he was writing a Calculus book , because in Calculus just looking at a few model problems is enough to master the subject to a reasonable degree. However in higher level math courses due to the huge number of different methods and its variations , it is more important to develop insights into the subject.
This will not happen when studying this textbook.I consider this to be the BIGGEST FLAW of the book.
Conclusion: This is a very bad Abstract Algebra Book.AVOID this book if you are trying to learn something about the subject.

1-0 out of 5 stars No good.
Like most textbooks on abstract algebra (group theory), this book has no reason for existence. You can't learn from it; the student solutions manual provides only limited "help", the chapters are too discursive, haphazard and in general so abstract as to defy comprehsnion by the ostensible reader (student). In short, the book provides no understanding of the subject, for the author does not know how to start from the beginning and build.

If his book is any indication of the way he teaches, I would hate to be one of Mr. Gallian's students, for despite my best efforts, I would probably end up leaning nothing and find myself unable to put it all together..

It's obvious that Mr. Gallian does not care about his reader. Two circumstances support this:

Mr. Gallian's proof of Cayley's theorem is obviously intended for someone already familiar with it for among other things,it is presented without motivation and without concreteness. This shortcoming is not unique to Mr. Gallian, for I tried at least four other sources before finding one which starts at the beginning.

The discussion of the computation of Aut(Z10) is incomprehensible, again due to Mr. Gallian's disdain for providing even the simplest motivation--in short, he does not nkow how to start at the beginning.Mr. Gallian apparently expects us to intuit that because an isomorphism takes an element from order K to another element of order K, (U(10) is isomorphic to AutZ(10).I know that I don't express this well--but that's for Mr. Gallian to do.Incidentically, Mr. Gallian's treatment of the isomorphism of (Zn) to (U(n)is just as baffling.I, for one, don't expect genuis from a textbook, only clarity.

I should not have to remind Mr. Gallian that abstraction is engendered from the concrete. He has been teaching long enough to know this.

Books like his are one of the reasons why people are turned off to math in general.

P.S.I am still looking for a good (read clear, logical, organized) textbook on abstract algebra (group theory).

This textbook was in great condition and shipping was fast so I got it in time for school.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible book!
As someone who made an A in the first two developmental math courses, I would think that I could successfully complete this course. My other two classes were done online and I am attempting to take this one online as well. The book does not match up to the Course Compass problems and therefore I am failing. I will have to drop this course. Shame on the writers and publishers who made this piece of junk. If you want to fail your last developmental math course, take a class from a college that uses this book! ... Read more
