Extractions: DATA: 27/3 TITULO DO SEMINARIO: Evolutionary algorithms in Astronomy and Astronautics RESUMO: Astrophysics, astronomers and aerospace engineers are often faced with hard optimization problems involving complex non-linear systems, and computationally expensive simulations. Evolutionary algorithms (EAs) can be a highly effective tool for solving these problems. EAs are stochastic search techniques loosely based on the principles of natural evolution, namely adaptation and survival of the fittest. Being extremely simple and elegant from an algorithmic point of view, these techniques are strongly customizable too, consisting a state-of-the-art approach for solving hard optimization tasks. This talk will outline the fundamentals of EAs, surveying some relevant applications of these techniques to Astronomy and Astronautics. These applications range from interplanetary-tranjectory design or the detection of planets orbiting around pulsars, to the modeling of galaxy interaction or the design of a satellite boom.
