Excerpt: Angelo Sabino or in Latin Angelus Sabinus (fl. 1460s1470s) was an Italian Renaissance humanist, poet laureate, classical philologist, Ovidian impersonator, and putative rogue. Sabino's real name was probably Angelo Sani di Cure, with the toponymic indicating that he was from Cure or Curi (ancient Cures), in formerly Sabine territory, hence his Latin appellation Sabinus. He wrote under a multitude of pen names, including Aulus Sabinus when he impersonated the Sabinus who was Ovid's friend, and Angelus Gnaeus Quirinus Sabinus, in reference to Quirinus as an originally Sabine god of war in ancient Rome. Sabino advertised himself as a poet laureate on the title pages of his editions of ancient texts. It is unclear in whose court he held the position, or in what year, though one scholar conjectured 1469. At any rate, he was identified as such in the period 14691474, following the composition of his historical epic De ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=25353521 ... Read more

Excerpt: The Ten Commandments, or Decalogue, is a list of religious and moral imperatives that, according to the Hebrew Bible, were spoken by God (referred to in several names) to the people of Israel from the mountain referred to as Mount Sinai or Horeb, and later authored by God and given to Moses in the form of two stone tablets. They are recognized as a moral foundation in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. In Biblical Hebrew, the commandments are called (transliterated ) and in Rabbinical Hebrew (transliterated ), both translatable as "the ten words" or "the ten things." The English name "Decalogue" is derived from the Greek translation "ten terms", found in the Septuagint at Exodus 34:28 and Deuteronomy 10:4. The phrase "Ten Commandments" is generally used to refer to similar passages in Exodus 20:217 and Deuteronomy 5:621. Some scholars distinguish between this "Ethical Decalogue" and a different series of ten commandments in Exodus 34:1127 that they call the "Ritual Decalogue". Although Exodus 34 contains ten imperative statements, the passages in Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5 contain fourteen or fifteen. However, the Bible assigns the count of ten to both lists. Various denominations divide these statements into ten in different ways, and may also translate the Commandments differently. The lists known as the Ten Commandments are given in passages in two books of the Bible: Exodus 20:217, Exodus 34:1127 and Deuteronomy 5:621. These ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2539671 ... Excerpt: Joseph Priestley (13 March 1733 (Old Style) 6 February 1804) was an 18th-century English theologian, Dissenting clergyman, natural philosopher, educator, and political theorist who published over 150 works. He is usually credited with the discovery of oxygen, having isolated it in its gaseous state, although Carl Wilhelm Scheele and Antoine Lavoisier also have a claim to the discovery. During his lifetime, Priestley's considerable scientific reputation rested on his invention of soda water, his writings on electricity, and his discovery of several "airs" (gases), the most famous being what Priestley dubbed "dephlogisticated air" (oxygen). However, Priestley's determination to defend phlogiston theory and to reject what would become the Chemical Revolution eventually left him isolated within the scientific community. Priestley's science was integral to his theology, and he consistently tried to fuse Enlightenment rationalism with Christian theism. In his metaphysical texts, Priestley attempted to combine theism, materialism, and determinism, a project that has been called "audacious and original". He believed that a proper understanding of the natural world would promote human progress and eventually bring about the Christian Millennium. Priestley, who strongly believed in the free and open exchange of ideas, advocated toleration and equal rights for religious Dissenters, which also led him to help found Unitarianism in England. The controversial nature of Priestley's publications combined with his o...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=40176 ... Read more

Because of this, he acquired the byname Venerabilis Inceptor, or "Worthy Beginner" (although he was also known as the Doctor Invincibilis or unconquerable teacher).
