Excerpt: The Mayerling Incident refers to the series of events leading to the apparent murder-suicide of Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria and his lover Baroness Mary Vetsera. Prince Rudolf was the only son of Emperor Franz Josef I of Austria, and therefore heir to his father as Emperor of Austria, King of Hungary, and King of Bohemia. Rudolf's mistress Mary was the daughter of Baron Albin Vetsera, a diplomat at the Austrian court. The couple's bodies were discovered at Mayerling, Rudolf's hunting lodge, in Lower Austria on January 30, 1889. Crown Prince Rudolf Mary VetseraBy 1889, many people at the Court, including Rudolf's wife Stephanie and his father Franz Joseph, knew that Rudolf and Mary were having an affair. Rudolf's marriage to Stephanie had resulted in the birth of one daughter, Elisabeth, and was not particularly happy. Rudolf had no male heir. On the morning of January 30, 1889, Rudolf and Vetsera were found dead at his hunting lodge Mayerling. The death of their only son devastated Franz Joseph I and Elisabeth of Bavaria. As Rudolf had no son, the next male heir was Franz Joseph's brother, Karl Ludwig and his issue. The initial official explanation for the incident was that Rudolf had suffered heart failure; Vetsera was not mentioned and her body was secretly buried. I was disappointed with this book...
I pre-ordered this book based on the attractive cover and the names on the editorial board.I'm a big Dr. Sears fan and was very excited to see a book on positive discipline endorsed by him that focused on toddlers.Unfortunately, I was disappointed and plan to send it back. There wasn't anything I didn't agree with, but there just wasn't much substance.I typically enjoy workbook style books, but many pages were half-filled with room for notes that appeared to me to be simply filler."I just wanted more.I've since read "Redirecting Children's Behavior," by Kathryn Kvols and found it to be an excellent guide.I'm a Master's level therapist and think the book by Kathryn Kvols will be highly valuable both in my work with kids and families as well as providing me with a solid philosophy and effective techniques for parenting my son now as a young toddler through to the teenage years.Even though I found no fault with the content of this book, (and still love Dr. Sears) I would not recommend this book. ... Parents Take Notice!
If you only read one parenting book in your lifetime, then T.I.P.S. should be your choice. The earlier in your child's life you can get your hands on a copy, the better. Weininger clearly and succintly sets out his plan for helping children and parents deal with the most volatile emotional times in the everyday life of a family. It's a short little volume that might just change the way you think about crying and tantrums forever.

While his approach may be less than culturally popular at the moment, his research-based findings about the effects of parents' actions on babies to teenagers are simply revolutionary. With an ultimate respect for the dignity and psyche of the child, Weininger has an invaluable lesson to teach parents about how their daily interactions and disciplinary efforts need to always take into account the long-term ramifications on child development.
