Product Description
Herbert Spencer was a major figure in the intellectual life of the Victorian era. He was one of the principal proponents of evolutionary theory in the mid-nineteenth century, and his reputation at the time rivaled that of Charles Darwin. Spencer was initially best known for developing and applying evolutionary theory to philosophy, psychology and the study of society - what he called his "synthetic philosophy".

Today, however, he is usually remembered in philosophical circles for his political thought, primarily for his defense of natural rights and for criticisms of utilitarian positivism, and Spencer's views have been invoked by 'libertarian' thinkers such as Robert Nozick.

The Economics of Herbert Spencer by W. C. Owen presents a wide description of Spencer's economic, philosophical and political ideas. This book offers a comprehensible explanation of Spencer's methodology based on individualism; through this schema of thinking Spencer won his reputation as one of the leading apostles of the philosophy of freedom. ... Product Description
In this stimulating work, six distinguished authors describe the major phases in the development of scientific conceptions of nature, from classical Greece to the present. Geoffrey Lloyd shows how different ideas of nature originated in the polemics of ancient Athens. Alexander Murray analyzes medieval conceptions of nature in terms of contrasts between learned and unlearned, between schools of thought, and between Christianity and Greek philosophy. Richard Westfall argues that the essence of the scientific revolution of the 17th century was its novel conception of nature: quantified, mechanized, and secularized. Elliott Sober examines ways in which Darwinism undermined teleological thinking in biology. Finally, Roger Penrose makes accessible to the layman the nine basic theories on which modern physics draws in constructing its world-views, and Robert May shows how biological processes can now be investigated, and perhaps controlled, at both the molecular and the population level.Presenting the views of some of the leading researchers and scientific thinkers in the world today, this is a remarkable survey is intended for all readers interested in the history and philosophy of science. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Elegant, breathtaking - metaphysics made beautiful
This is probably the greatest tribute by one great philosopher to another. George Santayana, at once one of the 20th century's most reasonable thinkers as well as its most poetic, pays tribute to 19th century British philosopher Herbert Spencer. The first two pages of this essay are extremely beautiful, and, for the most part, on-target. Santayana honors Spencer by considering his least popular doctrine, that of "The Unknowable," as a mistaken characterization of an important insight. This essay became an important run-through, for Santayana, of his basic ontology, later elaborated in "Scepticism and Animal Faith" and in the four books of "The Realms of Being." This may be one of the best places to start with Santayana - or to re-evaluate Spencer's metaphysics. Santayana places himself in Spencer's camp, which is that of a practical man, a "common sense" man, who nevertheless does not fall prey to the limits of everyday "common sense." Spencer and Santayana, in seeing the obvious as well as what lies beyond (behind?) the obvious, prove themselves to be important thinkers. The only trouble with this essay is that it is so beautiful that one can lose the train of thought in elegant phrases and apt metaphors. The solution? Read again! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Herbert Spencer (1820-1903) was a major figure in the early development of sociology, famous for work which likened society to an organism and analysed it in evolutionary terms. In this context he was contributing to evolutionary theory before as well as after Darwin and argued consistently that society would be perfected through the operation of the principle that every man should be left free to do what he would as long as he did not interfere with another man's freedom.
Spencer's work has been neglected in recent years, but its indirect influence lives on both in libertarian political thought and in the discipline of sociology itself particularly through the work of Durkheim who was heavily influenced by Spencer. This major set traces that influence from the reaction of Spencer's contemporaries to the present day. Contributions come from across the social science disciplines and are often taken from difficult to access contemporary sources. ... Read more
